GW2 Pause/Freeze while Playing
Are you using the new 64-bit client? I’ve heard this happen to many people who switched, and seen it myself on occasion.
It has done it with 32bit and 64bit. Game goes through what feels like GPU Driver Reset. Game pauses for 1-2sec then picks back up. Happens every 10min / 15min.
Fresh Windows install and nothing is running. I’m wondering if GW2 doesn’t run well with Win10 or the Dx12 backend.
I believe what the problem is – is that GW2 is not 100% compatible with Windows 10. And these developers will need another 4 years in college to address it.
Ok just figured out what the deal is. The game is not caching the textures all the time like it should be thanks to a blip in the coding. I was about to dump a lot of cash into Keys but I ain’t dumping sheeeeet into this game until they fix this.
Back to my older games. Glad I didn’t drop a dime into the expansion either! WHEW! Saved me money.
The game should run perfect on your machine, I have a similar set up….

No problems here.
Make sure you optimise the game in Nvidia Geforce Experience.
Or use Nvidia Inspector to run your cards in SLI for GW2.

I have same problem, but starts after I play a few hours, then I restart the PC and the game returns to normal

Have you checked how is the HDD reading/writing frequency (easier way is through some led)? Usually applications and games may freeze due high HDD activity, like HDD getting 100% busy with read/write tasks. I haven’t had such issues and my machine is even worse than OP’s, then I don’t think it’s solely game’s fault. Make sure you haven’t any software running that could keep HDD busy, like AVs.
P.S.: Yes, freezes issues are easier related to HDD tasks than memory, GPU or CPU. Get your HDD 100% busy and you cannot do anything with your system at all, no matter if you have a 16 cores CPU with 256 GB RAM or what not.
P.S.S: Yes, I know it very well from my own experience because recently I had issues with my HDD filled with bad blocks, the system would get busy dealing with data in bad blocks causing the usage to go up to 100% and then all apps would stop responding out of nowhere for seconds or even minutes.

I have, I’ve done the GFE setup. I’ve tried everything possible.
I really think it’s an issue with the code not caching the textures properly

Running 3 SSDs in RAID-0
Hmm, ok that possibility is discarded then. Or not, even SSDs can get busy and as I said if the HDD gets 100% busy stuff will start to freeze. Anyway, I haven’t been having freezing issues as you describe then the issue may not be with the game only. shrugs

If you believe that there may be issues with textures you might try repairing the game. Maybe it helps.

I had wondered that too but this is a fresh Win10 install and fresh GW2 download. Before and after the game does the same.
Yeah…. I think I’m done with this. ArenaNet needs to hire more competent developers. It was bad enough it took them 3 years to fix the MouseScroll bug in the game and this bug is in relation to Windows 10 and texture issue. If it took 3 years for a Mouse bug than this will take them a decade to fix.
I cannot put money into a game that is development by developers fresh out of school. Off to find another game :/
Well, too bad you couldn’t find a fix but also I wouldn’t blame and curse the game only. Possibly something in your system isn’t working well with the game and vice-versa. If it was an issue with the game “only” several others would be suffering the exact same problem, but that’s not the case apparently.
Also, Windows 10 is relatively pretty new and several other softwares are still adapting to it. Again, I wouldn’t blame the game only without further analysis. You even said that you hadn’t the issue with Windows 7. Your best bet would be trying to contact Support and try to get them to work with you on figuring it out. If you aren’t feeling like doing so then I just can say good luck finding something else and too bad seeing you go.
No worries. I uninstalled the game and have zero plans to upgrade to the expansion or drop a coin into their pockets. Can’t support something they refuse to fix.
As for anything I’ve done I have done full reinstall of the OS and game itself. Two complete different systems operated the same, too. It’s a problem on their end.
Took’em 3 years to fix a Mouse bug in the game. I have no hope of them resolving this issue any time soon. The devs are former Blizzard entertainment employees that didn’t make the cut. I can’t ask for a miracle and expect them to understand the issue and resolve it.
I was having issues a month or so ago, and installed the 64-bit client. No more crashes, very minimal screen lag/freeze issues.. until today.
Got the Windows 10 service pack update. No issues with any other program on my system, which is brand new, just built in October, a mirror to the one my husband is using, except for our towers (he’s got a RAIDMAX Narwhal ATX-920WB, and I’ve got a RAIDMAX Vampire ATX-001WBTi with some added fans and lights- I’m girly all the way, what can I say!) so, anyway, get the service pack update today and the poo is flung directly at my screen this evening. Every 3-5 minutes my screen would freeze up so badly, I fell from the skies trying to do the North starting events in DS. I quickly exited to my desktop and launched using the 32-bit client. It was much better though still had that hanging on by spit and luck feel to it.
My husband has not applied the Windows update to his system yet. He has had some screen lag issues but nothing NEAR what I had tonight, so we’ll keep you all updated as we try to pinpoint what is going on.

Thank you for some feedback. Sounds like GW2 64bit + Windows 10 is fail for some folks then.
Gotta love these ArenaNet devs….. So far the most amazing devs left their companies and went to Robert’s company (Start Citizen). Just means those game we love (loved?) will continue to suffer when the talent leaves and goes elsewhere
Glad to know I wasn’t the only one with these issues. It’s really been bad, I feel like it just gets worse as I play more too.

Well, see? As I said previously you can’t blame the game only and now it seems clearly that Windows 10 has some part of the guilt too. I’m not saying that GW2 is perfect and Windows 10 is the bad guy, I just mean that it’s just a matter of some incompatibility between them.
And again, Windows 10 is pretty new and not everything out there is already able to be “fully” (yes, stress on “fully”) compatible with it. MMOs and OSs are complex systems and even worse if they have to co-op between them. It will take a time to optimize stuff then give them some time and things will get sorted somehow.
(Just to note: Windows 7 64 bits here and a PC even lower on specs than yours and having none of freezing issues like yours so far, then because I’m sure when saying it’s not entirely GW2’s fault only. Let’s be fair and reasonable).
I have this problem when i run chrome in the background. Using IE browser fixed it
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore
Not that it’s good news, but this issue exists for the OSX client as well. Just started happening about a week ago, between 2-10 times an hour. Pair this with the utter inability to play any of the new zones (guaranteed crashes every 30s in Dragon’s Stand), and it’s easy to see how this is a difficult game to love right now. :-)
Marrowmind the Reaper, 50% of the Twin Overlords of Netherfore (Sea of Sorrows)
This is happening to everyone I know – not some, ALL.
This “pause” or “hesitation” bug is really tearing the game to shreds and not one person from Anet is paying any attention to it.
If it’s not fixed, and it’s not then this isn’t an “old” posting, it’s an ignored one.
I hate posting bugs in the forums because no one EVER takes note unless it’s all over reddit or youtube.
I have a Geforce GTX 970 and getting random black screens during play then it recovers like nothing happened. The black screen last for about 2 seconds. It does this when I play with my onboard Intel graphics card also so it’s not a driver issue. I have updated everything, this has started happening with a recent Windows 10 update.
I have the Windows 10 pro 64 bit version , it never did this before with the first version of Windows 10 or when I had windows 7. GW2 probably not compatible with this Windows 10 version since it’s the only game that does this.
Same card, the random black screens just started. I’m wondering if it’s the latest nvidia driver update?
My wife had the same issue, and I fixed it by disabling the superfetch feature of Windows (which is an abomination that needs to die in a fire). It has been a headache since it was introduced in Windows Vista.
What the superfetch service does is load your commonly used programs into memory so that they are available the moment you need them. For example, if you use Firefox as your browser, it will load Firefox into memory when Windows is first booted to the desktop.
As time passes, it will accumulate more programs to put in memory by tracking what programs you use the most. Its goal is to utilize all your memory; because the idea is that unused memory is wasted. And this would be a good idea, if Windows was efficient in releasing the memory when it’s needed, but it isn’t. It’s horrible at it and always has been.
Turning this service off frees up your memory. The downside is that loading of commonly used applications may be a little slower (though the reality is that it tends to only be slower by a second or two…maybe three…in my experience). In my opinion, it’s worth it.
To turn it off in Windows 10, open the Services desktop app (you can do that by typing “services” in your Cortana search bar). Then, scroll down and find Superfetch. Right-click on it and press “Stop” to stop the services. To disable it completely, go to Properties and set it to Disabled (this will not affect your system in any adverse way other than the way I described above, and you can turn it back on if you change your mind).
I cannot guarantee this will work for you. I am merely letting you know what worked for my wife. I didn’t have the issue because I always disable the superfetch service whenever I reinstall Windows.
Let me know what your results are.
