Guild Wars 2 freezes , could it be a virus?
https://www.twitch.tv/hibatheshoopuff
If it’s a virus in the GW2.exe file we should get a whole lot more reports then your double (single) incident.
You 100% you download the client trough GuildWars2.com?
Guild Website: http://www.wtnf.net
Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb07P-bW94jE3-mKHGToyOg
As Guardian said, if there were a virus inside the download files for the game, there would be more than just one post on the forums about it (especially since there was a big influx of new players/accounts in the past month or two due to the discount).
Did you actually download the client from the official website?
How about posting some information about the virus, the scanner you used and what it did tell you about it ?
[Edit] Just a thought:
there are some viruses that can´t be killed by formatting and ssds can´t be erased completely
Did you upload your gw2.exe to virustotal.com ?

This rings echo’s of another post on the bugs section where the OP was its not my system its the games fault, yet point blank refused to post any details about there system setup at all.
If the game was infected with a virus after the patch everyone who plays the game would be having the same issue.
If I had to guess I would say that your virus scanner is trying to scan the gw2.dat file and it crashing the system because of it, or its eating so much memory trying to scan a 20-22Gb file.
I have seen this in another game I played where the .exe file was over 15Gb and the Virus scanner would lag the entire system down trying to scan threw it.
Yes , if it’s the virus comes from Guild Wars 2 , there will be more post about it but I don’t know why the virus itself only attacked my pc. TWICE too. And yes , I download Guild Wars 2.exe from the official website. The virus start attacking only when I tried to OPEN the game. I did a full virus scan and no scene of it. I suspect it attacks the Window 32 log.file or something , causes windows to completely freeze. How do I provide more information? There is no track of this virus except it’s freezing my pc. And no , there is nothing wrong with my pc , this I’m pretty sure. I played a lot of other games and this never happen to me ever. I was even wondering why my laptop turn so kittenty , I reformat it and seems nothing to be wrong anymore. I feel relieved. I downloaded the game , Guild Wars 2 from official website , patched it (I patch it on like few days , pause in between). After few days , I open Guild Wars2.exe , during loading (still black screen) . My pc completely freezes and I have to power off myself. I uninstalled it , but I think it’s too late because the virus already attacked my Windows 32.log file or whatsoever.
Edit : Yes reformatting helps to kill all the problems I had and run smoothly on my PC and other games. UNTIL I downloaded GW2 and open it, freezing problems start and so on

First things first removed the Confirmed from the title. Its extreamly misleading.
Then, can you post more details about the virus, what do you mean when other games are ‘unplayable’ etc

2. You could tell us your hardware specs…(CPU, GPU, RAM and so on)

4. HOW did you CONFIRM it´s a Virus and not something else ?
4.1 Do you have ANY infos about the Virus and how you confirmed it is one ?
5. Try to download the Complete GW2.dat at once.

[sip] I think it’s too late because the virus already attacked my Windows 32.log file or whatsoever.
Huh.. not sure if I got it but… what do you mean with “Windows 32.log”? First of all, .log files are merely text files, they do no harm themselves and log files are only that: log. They are used only to make a “history” of what a application did or happened with stuff, etc. Also, I have messed around with system files a lot of times and I can’t recall any file called “Windows 32.log”, then I wonder where did you get it from…
Lastly, try to not cause panic or whatever, not all issues in a system are caused by virus. Sometimes some bad settings in some software or corrupted files can cause some stress on resource usage, what can cause some freezing.
First of all you best bet would test your Gw2.exe on virustotal.com, it will test the file with several anti-virus softwares out there. After all, you can always try to contact the Customer Support as I’m sure they would clarify and help with stuff.
I’m using McAfee anti-virus.
I’m using Acer Aspire V5-573PG , upgraded to 8gb RAM
Specs :
Intel i7 1.80 ghz 2.40 ghz
8 gb RAM
Windows 8
64-bit operating system
Nvidia GeForce 750m
500 gb HDD
I said confirmed because I reformat my pc like 2-3 times , and redownload/reinstalled Guild Wars 2 2-3 times too. Took me a lot of time and the same problem occurs once I open Guild Wars 2 . At the moment , I already uninstalled the game and i can’t use virustotal.com. But okay , I’ll remove the confirmed on the topic. And also , I don’t remember the windows 32.log proper name. It’s a windows file or something.
I have no proper information about the virus , (how do I get one? when my laptop completely freezes?).
And , what I mean other games became “unplayable” is ..
So , once I open Guild Wars 2 , turn black screen and freezes my whole system . I have to power off manually. I was playing Diablo 3 smoothly without any problems. Until suddenly it freezes and I can’t open the application anymore ( freezes at loading ). And then I went to play league of legends. (I’ve been playing this game for YEARS and nothing happen like these before.) Same thing occurs , freezes during loading and unplayable again. All these happens right after I open GuildWars2.
Do you guys have any idea about this? Oh ya btw , new problem occurs after I open Guild Wars 2 again. If I leave my laptop idle for like 5-10 minutes , it will freeze when I get back to use it the laptop again.
Btw what do you mean by complete downloading Gw2.dat?
I “confirmed” that it is a virus because I had bring my laptop to few computer technicians already. They said reformat my laptop is the only choice I had. So I did reformat myself at home and everything seems to be fine again. Until I had chose to try playing guild wars 2 again. And these happens again.

Thanks for posting some Detail….
To me that sounds more like some kind of hardware failure due to overheating,
corrupt game/system files or whatsoever.
Did you try to run a benchmark to get your cpu / gpu to their limits ?
(D3 and LoL are a little less “hungry” for hardware and don´t heat up your pc as gw2 does [at least on my pc])
My wife had a similar problem (gpu got to hot) and i solved it with a new gpu.
I doubt that this will help, but i uploaded my gw2.exe here
you could try to use it
We need more JP´s !!
How could that be overheating if I just started my laptop for like few minutes? and it freezes. And in that case , why would it affected my other games that I run smoothly.
And nope , I don’t know how to run a benchmark to get my cpu to it’s limit. If it’s overheating , it could freeze again after i reformat. but nope , it only freezes once i open guild wars 2.
https://www.twitch.tv/hibatheshoopuff
Once I had issues with my comp freezing and I figured out it was due overheating, my CPU was dying due too much heat. At that time, my whole system would freeze within 5 to 10 mins of usage, then yes, even if it freezes with just a few mins of usage it can be due overheating.
As already stated, if it was an issue with GW2.exe itself everyone else here would be complaining (and cursing maybe) too. In this case, it sounds like it’s something on your system, since hardware to software, and not with GW2 itself (maybe GW2 is one victim too).
Anyhow, don’t panic and don’t prejudge or suppose things before having more proper info. At times the issue can be something you would never imagine. Unfortunately, freezing can be caused for several things and the only way to figure out is with troubleshooting and testing stuff. It’s hard to tell at first shoot. (and thanks for changing the title, it avoids some panic and misleading).
Oh another thing. you said you cannot access virustotal.com? Do you know why that?
If installing breaks stuff I would expect a hard drive failure.
If installing breaks stuff I would expect a hard drive failure.
Also it makes sense. When the system have some difficult reading/writing on hard disk and it causes too much stress in the system that it can freeze while it’s busy reading/writing. Guild Wars 2 itself does some intensive reading at its loading, then why it could be freezing during loading up.
I’ve been into few PC technicians.. They checked and all of them said it’s not hardware problem . If it is hardware problem it wouldn’t freeze because I open GW2 , it could be auto shut down or similar. If it’s hardware problem , why reformatting solves the freezing problem to other games (after I open gw2 , and it “attacked my other game causes to freeze too” ? And only occurs after gw2?
I cannot use virustotal.com because I UNINSTALLED Gw2 , I do not want to risk my laptop again.
Installing doesn’t break stuff , opening GW2 breaks stuff.
And it is not overheating… I can feel it , touch it . I switch on my laptop for like 20 seconds and instantly open gw2 , it still freezes. Same result . Doesnt make sense that it is overheating.
(I think I repeated what I typed many times and you guys stated the same statement .. No offense. Yes I know if it’s GW2 itself , many people would complain. But why recent patch? Why my laptop? I’m looking for the solution.)
Suspicions :
Overheating – Big NO , it’s impossible.
Virus – Still no , I run McAfee scans , no virus. FULL scan.
Hard Drive Problems – Maybe? I can see my drive turn 100% on the task manager before it freezes. But why? Why hard drive? If it’s hard drive problem I wouldn’t able to play my other games too. But why after reformatting I still can play the other games smoothly? Doesn’t makes sense.

You seem ignorant of how nanoscale electronics work, but I’m not sure overheating or the hard drive are issues either. If you had the system checked out by professional technicians then show us the diagnostic reports from the tests they conducted. Otherwise you still have no useful information to work from.

I’m not ignorant , I’m listing down the facts that I know that no one agrees with me. But yeah , I don’t know what’s the real issues too. It only happens to Guild Wars 2 , that’s why I came here.
https://www.twitch.tv/hibatheshoopuff
List numbers to back up your ‘facts’, if you don’t they’re just theories.
Tell us what your system specs are, and we can work from that towards resolving your issue. Ignorance isn’t insulting unless you choose to remain ignorant, fill in those missing gaps of information that a number of the people here have already asked of you but you have refused to give them.
Right now you’re saying ‘my car has a problem fix it’ without letting us look at it before expecting us to fix it. This is a failure to communicate that frustrates both parties. A doctor cannot prescribe medication based on the symptoms you list alone because you may miss one that he/she would find during an exam.
Since it freezes while booting GW2, I’m going with your processor isn’t up to snuff. My brother, who as it turned out didn’t even have a video card in his system, could even play GW2 because his processor was a little above what GW2 requires (dual core 2.0 ghz). Again I could be wrong because you have not specifically listed what your processor is.

Here is an article about the OP’s computer: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2458266,00.asp
It does not seem to be a very good gaming machine, but certainly seems to meet the game’s requirements.
Have you tried checking the drivers of your video card, make sure they are the latest ones?
What you are describing doesn’t sound like a virus at all, sounds more like a hardware issue, but don’t think it is overheating.
Is your McAfee anti-virus settings set to scan when you access files/programs? If so its scanning the 20gb Dat file bogging down your system.

Yeap , I already updated all of them to the latest version. No difference.. Maybe hardware , maybe not. I can’t tell. I don’t have any issues at the moment with other games.

You say this only happens when you try to play games so it tells me it has nothing to do with a virus but more of hardware dying or software settings is wrong.
I bet its your McAfee anti-virus settings, disable or uninstall it and try your games then and see what happens. The new 2015 Kaspersky Internet Security version done the same thing to me.

Good point there. If it’s set like that it may be trying to check the GW2 dat file, what would make the hard drive get 100% busy (either with loading as virus scanning). I’m not saying that may be the issue, but this point makes some sense and it’s a possibility.
Also I have recently noted that HD 100% busy causes more freezing than running out of memory or busy CPU.

No sir , only happens to Guild Wars 2 . After Guild Wars 2 , only to my other games. If I don’t open Guild Wars 2 , no freezing problem occurs. Like I said , I already uninstalled Guild Wars 2 and playing other games smoothly without any issue , I’m here because I want to find a solid possible solution that makes sense before I download the 25 gb Guild Wars 2 again , and risk my PC to freezing problems , which causes me to REFORMAT my laptop again (3rd/4th time?) AND redownload everything which took me hours (around 50 gb?)
But ok , I might agree with the McAfee . Maybe I will redownload again and risk it again, just maybe. Is it worth it? I don’t know. I’ll check the settings of McAfee and everything

This makes sense , but not a pure answer to me. No offense but you guys never name out / missed what I said earlier for like three times.
- Why ONLY after opening GW2 , and manually power off (because it freezes) , THEN my other games stop working? and why reformatting solved all my other games freezing issue but not GW2?
This is the question . This is why I came to GW2 forum. This is why I never waste my money to another pc technician again. So many days has passed , most of the people here never read what I said and went straight to the point. And when I do remind them that I told them like so many times , they offended me back . Is this what the GW2 community is?
Edit : 20 gb bogging down my system? I played plenty of games with 25 gb – 30 gb. No problems and no issue. Diablo 3 , Tera Online.

@Udai: Don’t get offended by the way as posts may be done here, communicating through forums can be hard and some people indeed doesn’t read all stuff before posting (although others, like me, do for sure).
Anyhow, I don’t think you offended neither someone meant to offend. The thing is it’s has been hard to understand your issue only with all details you gave, it seems to be more complex than the info you provided then all what we got is suspicions and guessing.
Anyway, as already said your best bet would be contact support for a more proper and direct assistance. Good luck and I hope you can have it solved soon.
I am actually having the same issue as thIs guy the last couple of days. I played Guild Wars fine for weeks and then after the latest patch, my computer will suddenly crash in the middle of Guild Wars 2.
I have upadared all my drivers, unistalled the game an attempted to reinstall, but the game client itself will freeze indefinitely when I try to reinstall. I can play it from my temp folder by running the GW2.exe file as administrator, but my computer is not reading it as a legitamately installed game, and I don’t have GW2 files anywhere else on my computer.
This does not happen with any other games on my computer, so I am assuming that it is caused by GW2, but then I don’t play any games nearly as graphic intensive. However, I have attempted to lower the graphic settings, and it doesn’t help. Whenever I choose “autodetect”, it goes to the highest settings, and then I lower them manually.
My Windows log in Event Viewer typically says “Could not access ’’ registry file on disc ??” Or something similar (I’ll try to post the actual error soon).
I have an 8-core processor and my graphics card has been able to handle guild wars at max settings until just these last few days. There have been NO hardware changes since it started having this issue.
I did run a sfc /scannow on my computer and it said that there was a corrupt file with my processor driver, but there are no other issues and I have looked through Windows Event Viewer logs, ran virus scans using Avast and ran disk clean up and the defragment analyzanalyoanalyizer that said none of my disks were above 4% fragmentation.
I was running Windows 8, and updated it to Windows 8.1, and the issue persists.
The processor corruption is the ONLY other likely suspect, and I have a feeling that the corruption might have occured because of the game shutting the entire computer off.
I have :
AMD FX™-8150 Eight-core Processor
16 GB of RAM
GeForce GTX 760 on two 2560 x1440 monitors ( I think the monitors are something like 21" or so)
Graphics Driver version 347.88
Running Windows 8.1 Pro
By the time I uninstalled GW2, my GeForce experience couldn’t even reach the game settings to optimize the graphic settings, and now it doesn’t list it because nothing on my computer realizes its installed because it lives in my local temp folder only die to the installer freezing.
I would really not like to risk another processer on GW2 if I could help it considering I could play it before, and now I can’t, and my processor is kind of expensive.
I had a complete freeze today, Well it wasn’t my first hang (most hangs are from other sources
Complete unresponsiveness to all keys, but gw2.exe was seemingly still running, Audio still playing in loop. I had my fair share of audio bugs before so. It could be the audiodriver, I tend to ignore those… I had audio crash before hanging Gw2.exe or just getting stuck in an infinite loop of static/ music or other sounds
But I expect a memory leak, not a virus tbh… To much stuff has been bad already this patch This could be one as well. I run 32Gb of ram, but as Gw2 can only adress it’sown little 4Gb block… I’m gonna keep an eye out for this…. I suppose It could be this classic thread destroyer…
Oh and the higher graphics requirement due to the new camera system taxes my GPU’s quite a bit more and makes them 70 celsius instead of 62… (air, not water), they were 24 hour tested and later 72 hour and suffered no hitch, though a lot of options haven’t been checked could be a dustbridge underneath the huge nvidia coolers…
Generally I would seek the problem with my rig, but the Beta graphics could easily be the culprits…. I really dislike the beta release in a ongoning system and the apperant instability dereiving from it…
Really hope they release a multithread application instead of keeping the present 2 thread game, allowing the game to scale over 4 threads or more threads would be very nice.
There was no reason whatsoever to crash though the video could be a direct reason, as the graphics were hanging , but the audio wasn’t could hear jumps but view was gone.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
I had the same thing with my PC. Windows 7, 64 bits.
It would freeze the screen, usually not the sound. I found out what worked for me is to clean everything gfx driver related and reinstalled a stable older version and installed it as administrator. Now I am 1.5 years further and no freezes since I did that. I dare not to upgrade my gfx driver because that’s when my trouble started =)
