I was on a necromancer using a dagger in… Blazeridge, I think, to kill skritt or somesuch. No minions or anything, just dagger, focus, and wells. Got this achievement all of a sudden and was somewhat confused on my sword-less class. This was a few days ago; I forgot until recently.

Unfortunately because I do use actual swords on other classes, I’ve no idea how long it’s been this way. I’d guess that much of the achievement came from real swords on my warrior, though, because I’ve not used daggers a great deal really.

There is another post where a staff ele got something similar. I think I’ve gotten staff master on my engineer along with some other weird thing on another profession.

Overall the weapon mastery achievements seems to have a bunch of bugs. I would say they aren’t particularly high priority but it would really suck if you were trying to do focus/warhorn/shield master and the kills counted for some other weapon.

Edit: It could also be a variation of the other ‘achievement bug’. For example sometimes after completing an achievement(usually daily item) and then you go view a vista the game re-displays that as if you just finished the achievement.

I received Sword Master on my elementalist as well.

I got it when I used Arcane Blast as one of my utility skills.

So…if you want to check, use your utility skills when making a kill and see which one actually adds the point.

I get that one a lot, but in this case I hadn’t been using a sword at all recently. If not a weapon it may have just been one of the wells… of course I don’t think I can really check now, since the achievement is fully completed and (AFAIK) doesn’t keep counting my ‘sword’ kills any longer.

Per the wiki: Some environmental weapons and utility skills count as a specific weapon type. For example, the golem suit in Air Drop counts as a hammer, and the arcane skills count as a sword. Some, such as Lightning Hammer[verification requested] do not count towards anything.

I feel like I should test this on my necro now. I use daggers way more than regular sword on several classes (ele off-hand and necro main hand 2nd weapon set), however, I was going through my weapon master achieves the other day and saw sword near 500 (if I’m remembering correctly). I couldn’t help but think, " I don’t remember using a sword that often, only to unlock skills. " So yeah, I think I’ll test this tomorrow, will follow up as soon as I can.

I am curious to know which necro skills might boost which achievement, if any are doing it reliably (i.e. it wasn’t just an odd bug).

I had heard that minions might be contributing to some of these counts for folks, but I haven’t run minions since >10 way back and never knew to check. And OP mentions not using them, either.

In any case, it seems to me odd to choose to let utility spells / elemental spells score weapon kills, but ultimately it’s of little importance. These were all kind of just "hey look points for playing" achievements, anyway.

Wells count as sword kills. <.<

I had a chance to test that on my necro and that is what’s found, so I guess the wiki was on to something there lol.

Lucky for necros (and elementalists, re: arcane skills) then I guess. Interesting bug though. I have to wonder how on earth they came to be assigned ‘sword’ killtype.

I got the longbow achievement on my guardian. I play a lot of reflects and at the time I got it I was in harpy fractals using my wall of reflection. So I seem to have killed that harpy with her own weapon.
