I have made a grave mistake. I used a recipe consumable on the wrong character. It was a multi-disciplinary recipe, and this character did not know any of the disciplines. I probably wouldn’t have been too upset, except that this was the recipe box for The Legend Experiment and, thus, literally irreplaceable.
Just to confirm that my true horrors had been realized, I bought an additional crafting license, learned Artificer, and, sure enough, found the recipes there, 449 ranks out of reach.
There’s probably nothing that can be done for my case, and I must grind through 449 ranks of Artificer (for the second time). But if my tale is enough to save someone from the same fate, so be it.
That being said, could we please have some protection set up in a future version of the game so that you are at least warned before learning a recipe for a discipline unknown by your character? That’d at least give the idiots like me a second chance before we commit to our acts of folly. We could also reduce confusion in this particular case by naming the item “Recipe Book” instead of “Box.” Since its name started with “Box” and its description started with “Contains recipes for,” I expected it to behave like a container, not a recipe.

I just learned this can happen, this time with [Recipe: Lye], part of the Spark’s crafting.

While having replacement items available is a good stop-gap, I would have expected recipes to be unavailable to learn by characters that didn’t meet the requirements for them. For example, my Elementalist doesn’t have 450 weaponsmithing, and should not have been able to use [Recipe: Lye].

Thank you both. That was a heck of a lot easier than grinding another discipline up to 450!

For future reference, you can also try contacting support. Depending on the circumstances, they might be able to help.

There’s a flip side to that. You can end up with bags stuffed full of recipes you hold onto until you do manage to level your crafting high enough to learn them. That can be really annoying. I prefer it as it is.

Though I have accidentally learned a few (thankfully cheap) recipes on the wrong characters. Possibly it should be an optional setting.
