Short and sweet: if you log in for the first time in a day, then log out and back in without claiming your log in reward chest, the log in reward chest vanishes from the UI and can’t be claimed for that day.

You must claim the Log-In Reward with the same (first) character you logged in with. You can’t claim it with any other character, though you can play or log in with another character and then come back to the first character and claim it.
