All of the nicknames I set for people on my friends list have been lost; this happened around the time of last night’s server maintenance. I stopped counting the number of times this has happened a few months ago, after the number reached 8 or 9.

It seems that is more likely to happen if I am online during a server maintenance window and one of the following happens: I’m disconnected, I lose access to /guild or /party chat, or I’m showing as “offline” (even though I am online).

I know you guys have been investigate the root causes of this for some time, so perhaps there’s a way to work-around the issue by preserving the nicknames in a file (perhaps encrypted) on the client side, so it doesn’t matter if there’s an issue connecting to the authentication servers. The file would save the 1:1 relationship between account names and nick names.

Alternatively, it might be better to remove the feature altogether, since it’s unreliable.

It is very irritating!

I`ve no idea who folk are when they are on alts, get party invites from random names that I just have to keep cancelling, until they whisper me to say who they are :$

Happened to me also. All nicknames gone.
