Title says it all.

Windows 7, more than sufficient hardware.

GW2 hogs 50-80% cpu and currently around 4GB memory.

Lowest settings, windowed mode, standing in Lion’s Arch, not moving at all.

Really embarassing guys. That game shouldnt take up more than 40% cpu and 700mb with those settings, and even that is a LOT for such crappy graphics.

What even is your processor?

“More than sufficient hardware” could be something that’s extremely dated.

Also what is your RAM…?

If you’re going to complain then why would anyone care if you aren’t going to share these details…?

If you have any hope of getting a qualified response to this thread, you need to add more information. System specs for starters.
Your title says “memory leak” but your post seems to indicate that it’s a static high memory usage – which is correct?

4GB of memory is definitely high (I’m getting ~900MB in LA right now).
Have you tried running a repair (add -repair to a GW2 shortcut destination)?

Currently… as in at the moment.

Just standing in Lion’s Arch I can watch memory increase slowly UP TO 4 GB, then usually I stop it. Not GW2 stops it.

Thats a memory leak.

My hardware has nothing to do with that.

Make sure in the graphics option that your “Frame Limiter” is set to 60 (your monitor should refresh at 60 Hz).

When it is set to the default “Unlimited” it uses up way too much RAM and really puts a strain on your video card. Try this and see if you notice a difference.

Have you tried adding more LEDs. How many LEDs does “sufficient hardware” mean for you?

Sufficient hardware = I exceed recommended by about 100%.

And sorry guys. But a memory leak does not have anything to do with hardware -.-

Hardware DRIVERS maybe, but thats a kittening big maybe… and since its only happening with gw2… rather not the case.

Yes, I locked framerate. As I said… minimum settings.

Its NOT about the amount of memory used (though you have to admit, its ridiculous what gw2 reserves compared to performance), but the fact that:
- just standing in a map
- memory slowly creeps until limit is reached or
- I manually stop it by either
- shutting down game or
- using setworkingsize (which btw I really DONT like).

Thats a memory leak.

Something “leaks” more and more data into memory. Which is NOT my hardware. But some function inside gw2, probably map update or old character data. Since it doesnt happen in INSTANCES, where theres a set amount of characters.

I hcan have GW2 running for weeks at a time and still have less than 2GB RAM use (of 16GB total). It’s not an issue with the client and is likely an issue with the graphical drivers on your system.

If you won’t give the information, then there is no point to this thread and it should honestly be closed.

edit: To add, sitting in la, you are actually loading other things, you know, every time a new player enters the area, you are loading their model, etc. I myself can watch it go up, then back down. You list it as a memory leak, but that isn’t what you are complaining about. I think you are confused, and the fact you won’t answer on the system, makes people question more than just your apparent confusing description, as well as why this is in Bugs and not Technical Support.

The OPs memory usage continues to climb. Even in a full map, he should not get anywhere near 4GB.

OP, have you tried repairing the client as I suggested earlier? As you mention yourself, it could also be a problem with drivers (though that’s pretty rare) or DirectX (try reinstalling).
To completely rule out that something is borked in your client, try reinstalling the whole game (if repairing doesn’t work). Which bit version are you using? It may be worth a shot to try the other one.

I don’t know that for sure, because what # of ram usage is he actually looking at?

Actual usage by gw2? or what windows is allocating for total system usage but not actually using?

He won’t give any specs, won’t really answer anything. Without more information, this isn’t going to go anywhere. I have max settings on 64 bit windows 7, it has 2.5 used for gw2 it says, and it stays around that. But 700 mb? no way will it only use that much.

I don’t recall the game having any noticeable memory leaks. I feel like more people would have made posts about the subject if it did, especially since there are people out there playing with substantially less RAM than what the OP probably has.

As someone mentioned, do a client repair, check your DX and drivers (though if it’s driver-based it should happen in more programs than GW2 unless the problem is some very, very odd fluke).

I’ve noticed this when I go to queue in Sparkfly Fen for Teq: if I hop into the map after an hour or more of playing the game, it’ll be usually at the 2.5GB RAM usage or so. Yet if I restart the game and load back into Sparkfly Fen, it’ll be using less than 1.4GB. But this could be caching in action (over time it’ll cache certain things, which just happens to grow the more I move about the game’s world) and not an actual memory leak.

During teq it’ll easily hit 3GB if not higher (without dropping graphics stuff from high it’ll eventually out-of-memory error). But this is already a known issue that they’ve acknowledged and can’t be fixed without a 64-bit client.

Edit: Please read the latter part of my post, I believe I found the source of my problem with performance drop / “memory leak”.

I actually have had this problem before. It usually occurs on my alt characters, or if I am on my main and I have just waypointed (or go through an Asura gate).

My FPS goes from about 115 to 5 or less randomly in areas where I usually get perfectly smooth fps.

I am not talking about karka queen, or meta world events when I naturally expect my fps to take a hit

However, these are my specs:

intel core i7 970 @ 3.33GHz
16GB G.skill ripjaws RAM
GeForce GTX 970 4GB
PNY Optima 480GB SSD (only 17% of it is used up, which is just GW2 and Windows).
^SSD is less than a month old, and nothing else lags for me.

I was running GW2 fine with the GTX970 and intel core i70 970 combo and never experienced a memory leak or massive frame rate drop in places where the frame rates is usually very smooth, so it is definitely not cpu/gpu bottleneck. I check the load % on my cpu and gpu when running GW2 with “OpenHardWareMonitor” and it really never reaches full load.

However, if I get the massive fps drop in places where my fps is smooth, I alt-tab out and check Task Manager and GW2 starts rapidly eating up my RAM. It usually only consumes <1GB of my RAM but lately has been eating up upwards of 2GB or more, and this is when I haven’t even been running the game very long (about less than an hour).

All drivers are current, windows 7 is updated.

I only started experiencing this memory leak within the last month, after Wintersday ended and I had reinstalled GW2 client within the last month too— still getting some Halloween sounds in Lions Arch which never makes sense to me (by the Banker near the WP that is somehow still contested).

But, the memory leak/massive fps drop is the issue I am most concerned about.

I don’t defragment my SSD obviously…
just updated windows
rolled back my gfx drivers and then reinstalled the latest driver, problem is still there.

Cleared cache, lowered the settings on windows to best performance, using OpenHardwareMonitor to keep my fans running high so everything runs cool and comfortable, cleaned my computer out in terms of dust…practically did everything known to man to fix the issue).

It mainly happens on my alt characters, which I have wanted to level recently to help out my guild more (my main is level 80 thief, trying to level a guardian and a mesmer to 80 right now).

I’m suspecting something is being overwritten on the core file as I play my alts that causes the memory leak?

Edit: I am fairly certain of what was causing the problem. I had 100% map completion on my main character, and this massive fps drop was only occurring on my alternate characters when roaming in PvE and open world, and they do not have 100% map completion.

I realized that my computer actually shut off when I recently installed GW2 on my new SSD during download/install, and so some of the files were never fully downloaded, so the RAM was being consumed rapidly and slowing the game down because the CPU was trying to fetch files that weren’t completely installed, thus, the massive performance loss. I am redownloading/reinstalling the game client again in entirety and I am sure the issue I am having will be resolved.

I would suggest OP do the same, as that will probably fix the memory leak—-it’s not actually a memory leak, the cpu is just confused when it is trying to fetch files that are either incomplete, most likely due to a bad install or interrupted update download, so it is caching an enormous amount of extra memory since it is looking for traces of files that aren’t there, leading to the memory not being able to be dumped and reused.

So, OP, please try redownloading the game client in its entirety and any updates and that should fix the problem.

I am redownloading / reinstalling the game client to make sure that everything is fixed (including the Halloween sounds in LA/Lion’s Arch).

My apologies for bumping an older topic.

I will report back after redownload/reinstall is complete to verify if the bug/issue has been fixed for me.

Gotta love MMO forums! “I do not experience your problem therefore it could not possibly exist in this game that I love; you must delete your post immediately, heathen!”

I’m having very similar issues. Either:

1) the game will randomly drop back to desktop with the 60 second countdown to an automatic error report,
2) It’ll freeze up and need a ctrl-alt-del to close it out,
3) It’ll BSOD.

All point to memory issues and I have no equivalent problems in other games. Specs, broadly, are Win 7, i7, 8GB RAM, GTX660 Ti. Nothing spectacular but more than enough for GW2. Problems tend to occur more in busy areas; Lion’s Arch, Divinity’s Reach or chasing daily quests.

I’ll try brian’s fix above and report back, but I have reinstalled GW2 once already since this started and it’s still happening.

Full re-installed seemed to offer some brief improvement, in that I survived all the way through an Ulgoth raid. However I did lose all sound as the local population picked up and when I immediately went over to Metrica to do the Fire Elemental, my machine just restarted. No more errors, just an automatic shutdown.

If your system just hard crashed, the windows system event viewer is where you need to look to see what errors the system was recording before the crash, ive seen it before where people get hard shut downs and its related to the PSU.

Just a quick update to say I fixed my particular problem – it was an overheating issue. I’d turned my fans down a few weeks back and completely forgotten to turn them back up! With decent cooling I’ve not had a single program crash, freeze or BSOD.

I just experienced this problem, I’m fairly new to Guild Wars 2, while playing started to experience severe framedrops and performance.

My specs: i5 4460/ EVGA GTX 970/ 8gig Hyper X fury/ MSI B85 PC MATE/ SSD Crucial/ WD 1TB HDD.

Been playing multiple games in the past months that haven’t had issues, most recent being Battlefield Hardline. So this is a problematic thing because after about 3 hours of play, performance starts to drop and it becomes less enjoyable. Usually when the FPS drops below 40, the CPU is at 40%+ and ram usage is at 2GB.

I may be having memory leak issue. all I know is that for almost a year now I cannot play the gam an hour or two without a BSOD or lock up. the best part is that it happens every single day, but almost never during a heavy battle or load. 95%of the time it happens when my character is just sitting idle somewhere. this has been and issue across two different main SSD/hard drives and two graphics cards. at first I thought it could be overclock on my cpu or memory speed to high, but it happens at stock too and if my ram is set to 1333mhz or 1600mhz which are pretty base for DDR3. my specs:

i7 4770k
16GB 2400mhz ram
GTX 970 (same crap with my R9 290 and GTX 780)
Samsung 830 128GB SSD
Gigabyte Z87X UD4H

I can play or idle in every other game I have (over 120 games installed) for hours, maybe days and not a single one causes my pc to crash or lock up.
