Today I encountered this – being attacked by someone under the terrain with a harpoon, in spots that were clearly not valid for such an attack or player presence. I did a search but didn’t find any mention of this previously, but it may be a known issue.

that’s sad when players have to resort to cheating and hacks just to get their jollies of the day. this is one of the things I can’t stand to be in wvw… as if it isn’t bad enough I have to look around all the time for a sneaky theif or mes in glamour/stealth, I have to watch out for land sharks x(

It is a bug where you can fall through the land (to water below it) in certain circumstances combined with many underwater attacks which do not need line of sight to hit.

Just abusing a glitches/bugs, but by no means a hack.

I myself have experienced falling through the terrain to this underwater area, but I have not been able to get los on people above as he did. The harpoon attack is a targeted one that does require los. For this reason I thought perhaps someone found a way to use the sonic tunneling toy for example to achieve this…in any case, call it an exploit, but it is still a serious one in my opinion.

It’s hard to say. It could be intentional or accidental. But you’d be surprised how many maps have a giant ocean underneath them (I fell through CoF floor one time and found myself in a fiery sea!) The harpoon gun does require LoS. But if he had auto-targeting on, it can target people without needing to see them, and then he could fire the harpoon gun through the ground (as the bottom side of the ground-plane has no collision, since people aren’t supposed to be down there)
