New backpack upgrade slot
Yes, i would also like to know what we can and/or are supposed to be able to put in that slot…
I’ve also run into this. I salvaged my old back piece in order to get my ruby jewel off, and can not place it in the upgrade slot.
Look at the req on the Backpack. Then look at the req on the jewel.

I can’t slot an exquisite ruby jewel or a ruby orb in the exotic leatherworker backpack but I can slot masterwork and below jewelry in that slot.
It’s an anomaly due to the level of crafted backpack, L78. I’m not sure why the packs aren’t L80 or why, if they are below, the level requirements for upgrades weren’t also updated.
In other words, this is probably “working as intended,” but perhaps ANet should revisit what their intent.

It is simple … You can’t put 80lvl upgrade item in 78lvl item … best you can use is brilliant jewelry … Why they did it that way? Those backpacks have better statistics than other exotic back items … so with 80lvl upgraded gems they will be better than ascended backpacks … and it can’t be that exotic will be better than ascended items.
I think I’d be happier with these new backpacks if they would lower the stats to match the other exotics so I can have my exquisite jewel back. Right now my back pack has lower stats than my old exotic did.
