Q:
New bug, or new exploit?
Doesn’t sound like a bug. But it could possibly have to do with the culling issues whenever large amounts of players need to get loaded. However I’m assuming this wasn’t the case for you at the time, so it sounds like an exploit or a hacker =)
IMO, its most likely an exploit using some kind of a bot.
What suggests this is the following (as you stated):
- Nonsense name
- Appears suddenly on the node
- Quick gathering and leaving

It’s probably a bot designed to switch through hundreds of characters on hundreds of accounts to farm the node repeatedly and obtain thousands upon thousands of the crafting material. This crafting material is then likely transferred to some other bot which sells it on the TP in order to make money to sell on the RMT market.
If you see players like this, report them as fast as you can! Don’t let them get away! Even if they’re not actually a bot, ANet will look into it and make the educated final determination before acting.
I just saw one of these rangers in Wayfarer’s, she “teleported” (ranger cannot teleport AFAIK) from node to node. When she disappears, she loses aggression of the mobs that are attacking her.
I’m pretty sure it’s not a lag issue because I saw other normal players moving around just fine.
I reported her, of course.
ah.. you still can report. I encounter some hack which display no Account name at all! xxxx.9876 <— Doesn’t show up.
Have you tried adding the player as a friend and reporting the player from your contacts list? I don’t know if that works but it might.
I’ve actually seen what I believe to be the very same person. I’ve spotted a female norn ranger with bear pet numerous times the last week in Bloodtide Coast and Sparkfly Fen – She just appears literally out of thin air, harvests a node, and vanishes.
I’ve also noticed her appearing again after I waypointed to another point of the map – seemingly as if she travels instantly.
Maybe 6-7 sightings. Each time I didn’t think to report, or add right away… If I see again, I will definitely report her.
For the toast!
