A Combo-Based Playstyle [Guide]

I’m a human ele.
I have literally no options for an elite skill underwater.
This includes Tornado, which supposedly should turn into Whirlpool underwater.
I’m told engineers can use their Elixir X to turn into the whirlpool underwater.
Why can another profession use my elite skills better than I can?
I’m assuming this is a bug, because I can’t understand any other reason behind ALL of my elite skills being marked as unusuable underwater.
Well. the one and only underwater elite skill a guardian can use is Renewed Focus but this is not a big waste since all guardian elites are worthless.
Same for thiefs as far as I can see, I get no options for elite skills, even though I am sure some should work underwater.
I read some posts on blogs, etc regarding Elementalist having a Whirlpool elite skill underwater but I don’t have any elite skill underwater as well, as a Human Elementalist. Is this a bug or it is just being disabled due to some reason? Can ANet clarify on this?
necromancers can only use plague, which i guess is decent for blind spam for 20 seconds..
but as minion master it is annoying how my flesh golem dies instantly when i touch water.
Very same here! Ele – Sylvari… no elite skill possibility in water, which is a shame
I do not know if that is on purpose? But probably not (as other classes can use their elites under water) and then its a HUGE BUG!
Same here Human Elementalist
we are supposed to have maelstrom or whatever the underwater version of tornado is called. Its perfectly functioning in Structured PvP underwater where its pre-set but outside of it I got nothing.
This has been bothering me since the betas. I feel a little underpowered losing an entire skill slot when I enter water. Asura, if it matters, but I doubt it.
In PvE and WvW I have no elite under water skill. In sPvP I have whirlpool by default.

Basilisk Venom works underwater, It’s the only elite skill that does for thief and its pretty subpar to be honest, at least for most underwater encounters, especially considering that it has an interruptable cast time.
Also all skills will display a water droplet with a red X over it, next to the cooldown, and cost icons, denouncing that its not usable underwater, have you looked at all of your elite skills, even the ones you don’t own, to see if they have that icon?
This is just bugged atm. Whirlpool is currently only available in sPvP.
Have noticed this for some time across numerous characters. I know l could change elite underwater previously. When will we we get an ETA on bug fix. This thread is two months old!
Yep, same issue with me on both my Thief and Guardian where I can’t change elite skills whilst underwater (other skill selection is working fine).
Would appreciate it if this could be looked at.
I know ArenaNet has people dedicated to skill and class balance. My WTF-ness at the fact that there is ABSOLUTELY NO profession elite skill which works underwater goes to 11. It’s just… mind boggling.
I hope something is done soon. If I can use fire underwater then I should be able to have a fire elemental underwater. I suppose an earth elemental wouldn’t swim very well, though, lol.
But, c’mon… there has to be SOMETHING. Even if you invent new abilities entirely for underwater. I could envision something that works like the plague necro ability where you go around spreading fire, chilling, electrocuting, sinking, etc. mobs in a similar fashion (instead of giving them plague).
As you noticed every class has 1 skill underwater which still makes the underwater fight balanced its just the matter of how you use your skills but yes having 2 would make it a lot easier. Leaving it in the suggestions is probably a good idea.
Someone told me today that the whirlwind elite works underwater. So I guess eles are in the same boat as thieves: they get one.
I have a sylvari elementalist and I can use the elite skill underwater (tornado, which becomes whirlpool). The only issue I have is that on pc client I can see the animation while on mac client the animation of the whirlpool is not rendered (but I thinks it depends from my mac since I use Snow Leopard which it is not supposed to be supported… but works fine except for the whirlpool skill). Strangely, instead, I was not able to load the elite skill on my aura guardian even if I unlocked all of them.
I did have no elite under water, until I selected the whirlpool.
There are also several runes and sigils that do not function underwater.
I think Anet needs to comb through all the mechanics & ask themselves: does this work underwater?
It wouldn’t hurt if that question, “Does this work under water?” is added to a checklist when creating new features.

And test these changes not only in mists but in general PvE areas too. So to expand that checklist: “Does it work?”, “Does it work underwater?”, “Does it work outside of mists?”, “Does it work underwater outside of mists?”. Because those seem to use different mechanics most of the time.

Never mind that plague, being a transform, makes our minions vanish. And minions are our main damage utilities under water…
If mesmer and guardian skills can turn into bubbles under water, why can’t wells?
Have the people posting here not realised that your underwater skill bar is independent from your land skill bar?
You need to go underwater and (while out of combat) and actually equip your skill (in this case, Whirlpool).
The only issue I have is that on pc client I can see the animation while on mac client the animation of the whirlpool is not rendered
It fails on PCs too, sometimes (though it might fail more on Macs). Same for “bubble” shields in general (fire shield, magnetic shield, etc.) – quite frequently they don’t render, even though their effect is active and you can see the icon listed in your boons – and other spells such as the necromancer’s Plague (sometimes you just get a white circle around your character, the cloud doesn’t actually render). This rendering issue has been around since beta.
