Not gaining any Hero Points by leveling
at level 31 you should have gained roughly 68 total hero points (without any challenges). 1 full specialisation line costs 60 hero points, add in a few utilities (at 2-5 hero points each) and at level 25, you would have more than likely spent more than you truly had.
sounds like the system made up for that by not giving you more, until you’d earned enough to cover what was already unlocked.
Edit to clarify: with no challenges done at level 25 you’d have 44 points. if the changeover gave you 1 full specialization line you’d end up with -16, on top of that the cost for utilities unlocked. so, it isn’t that you weren’t gaining any, it’s that the changeover caused you to spend points you didn’t have. when the amount went back to 0 you started gaining them again at level 31.

i did not start gaining at 31, when i reached 31 i still didnt gain anything, and the 6 i have are from the 6 hero challenges i made from 25 to 31. i am currently at level 31 still, i havent played with that character lately. I also thought it a possibility of some kind o hero points dept by looking at the ammount of unlocked specialisation/skills, but i was then told in mail by anet that i was experiencing a bug.
just tested on a level 25 mesmer who was created way before the patch and has been sat at that level for a while (had chaos specialization and some utils unlocked and had 0 hero points according to the panel). level 31 was when he started getting hero points again, but he only got 5 at level 31 instead of the 8. at level 33 he got the full 8, so it does seem like a debt payment of hero points.
for science!

I hope this isn’t “working as intended” because doing hero challenges all over maps can be an annoyance.

Thank you for letting me know of your test, though we both started at 25 i havent gained anyhing yet at 31 but that may be because of possible different number of skill challenges we made before patch. Still, wierd anet called it immideatly a bug, and if this is “working as intended”, apart from being a bit stupid by using points we dont have on somtehing we, in most cases, dont want, they should, at least, explain it better, i had a time i just lost all interest in playing with my ele because my build was all upside down with stuff i didnt want and i couldnt even get the points to start getting the specialisations that i wanted. If this is a bug, plz fiz it, if not, at least explain it better. I still think however that if we just got the points corresponding to our level + challenges made, it would avoid these “bugs” and on top of all, many ppl would be happier by spending their points on the things they wanted
If you started fresh, it’s working as intended. If you had a character leveling and were at a point where the line unlocks and point useage don’t mesh, it isn’t. I’m actually not surprised, as any game which has a point distribution for specs has it happen at least once when they make major changes to such a system.
Don’t worry, it will get hammered out, or ANet will simply refund all the distributed points, zero out the distribution, and make us redistribute them. If it wasn’t for the high likelihood of hero challenges causing problems in the latter case, ANet probably would have done just that. It would be both easier, and less chance for problems that way.
