Not getting Event Mentor Credit
It depends – the event level as listed in your upper right panel should say (42), if it says (43) and you are still down scaled it won’t count.
But since ANET introduced alot of these different dailies, I wouldn’t be surprised if its based on 1: your sidekicked level 2: the level of the event and 3: if you are sidekicked when accepting the event.
Any of the above 3 could be grounds for the daily achievement – to be safe do a world event like Maw or Fire ele.
In the mean time we should probably research this and post results on wiki…

The mentor event might work on tiers. Perhaps 1-15, 16-26, 27-36, and so forth. (Certain types of loot follow this pattern, e.g. at L16-26 copper doubloons are at-level loot, but silver ones drop at the next tier.)
So, 43 & 42 events might be the same tier and therefore not count as “sidekicking.”
The skritt events with only 1 level difference makes things tricky. You might start downleveled but by the time you have chased it to the end that might not be the case anymore.
Wrong. The Event Mentor is rewarded if in the group you are finishing event is a person with lower real lvl than your real lvl. Easy to obtain if you go to low-level area and help (mentor) people with the quests.

Not quite. You don’t actually need to be mentoring anyone.
All you need is to complete events below your actual level (while “sidekicked”). “Mentor” is likely a figurative term, as you’re not expected to be wandering in low level areas unless you’re helping someone else with his/her tasks. Actually doing it is not mandatory tough.
The skritt thieves event is lv41 and the area is lv42, so OP should indeed be getting credit for it.

I’ve completed many of these dailies since they were introduced, never that I can recall in a group.
That said, mostly I do them in Queensdale were the side-kicking is many levels, previously I did this ‘failing’ Harathi event on a character level 45+ so my presumption is that VoxShatterfall is on the right lines and the level difference it too small; even though the side-kick mechanic is clearly kicking in by the presence of the 42|43 level indication with the green down-arrow left of the XP bar.
