This started happening maybe ~1 month ago, not sure exactly.

All of my chat filters are checked except for Emotes, however I cannot see any Guild, Party, or Whisper messages. This happens both on my native server and guesting to other servers. It happens in every party I make or join, and in any guild I am a member of and representing.

I can successfully send messages in all of those channels, because people tell me they see what I am sending, but I do not receive anything except Local and Map.

Additionally, I cannot see feedback that I have sent any message at all for Guild and Party. I can, however, see that I have sent something as a whisper.

Any ideas? I would rather wait on the “reinstall game and see if it fixed it” until I have made sure no other option exists to try.

Thanks for the reply. I haven’t changed the user privilege level that I run the game at since install ~1 yr back, and this is relatively new behavior. I will still try to ‘run as administrator’ next time and report back, because I am open to try anything that isn’t destructive.

As for the ticket, I opened one simultaneously with this thread but it isn’t going anywhere fast…the first reply suggested that I had the channels muted [I said I didn’t in the ticket body] and described how to enable them, and the second reply asked for a screenshot showing the issue. Not sure how I can showcase that someone sent a message in Guild Chat and I didn’t receive it.

Lol oh boy!

They may want to confirm you are in a chat panel that has all chat channels enabled. Left click the gear icon in the left corner of the chat panel… If you don’t see that, click the little chat bubble in the absolute lowest left corner, then you should see the gear. Play with the settings there.

Uninstalled and reinstalled the whole game, and nothing has changed

Given that, and the fact that it hasn’t always been this way, I guess it is safe to conclude that it is somehow occurring on the ANet side of things??

Are you sure your in-game status isn’t set to “offline”? If you open up the friends list (I think “Y” is used for that) and look at your status up top left in that window, what colour is the little square? If it is grey, you’re listed as “offline” and cannot receive any guild chat messages, party or whispers. Click on it to change it. If it’s bright green though, then something else is the problem.

It was a good idea but I checked and yes, it is green – ‘Online’

edit: I originally posted this in the Bugs subforum but a moderator moved it to here, I guess thinking that it was something on my end that was causing the problem.

Now that I have entirely reinstalled the game and the problem is persisting, would it be more appropriate to have it back in the Bugs area?

It certainly is odd enough. Did you try fiddling with the status (I mean changing it to offline, and back to online again? I’ve had checkboxes and settings behave strangely myself – options turned on even though they were not checked, and not turned off until I checked and cleared the checkbox). If that doesn’t do it, I’d send in a support ticket and hope they’ll be able to figure it out on their end.

Just gave it a shot but had no impact. I tried toggling between offline and online, nothing changed. I tried toggling offline, closing and reopening the client, nothing changed. Good idea though, thanks for the suggestion.

As you have not yet addressed Kyllaa.1385’s post regarding checking your chat panel settings, would you please state that you have, indeed, checked those settings and that it is not the cause of the issue, or that you have checked those settings and that it did resolve the issue?

It does seem to be the cause as chat panel settings (as well as graphics settings and key-bindings) all persist even after an uninstall and reinstall due to being saved in a file that is not removed during uninstallation nor replaced during reinstallation.

I deleted those files you are referencing prior to my reinstall, as I wanted a clean slate.

And yes, I have checked my chat panel settings. I leave everything enabled [checkmarked] but emotes, and have verified that that is still their state. I have also fiddled with enabling & disabling, and combining that with reopening the client just to see if something was out of parity. Didn’t help.

Very thorough of you. That is refreshing to see.
I’m not coming up with anything right now that may help resolve the issue, though I will give it a lot of thought and test a few things out to see if I may be able to come up with something that may help.

This may not be related, but what corner of your screen do you have your chat box positioned in? Have you tried moving it to a different corner to see if that ‘resets’ the chat box and its settings or something?

Or does resizing the chatbox or increasing/decreasing the font size the chat text appears in via the chat box options help?

Do you also have the option to display channel tags enabled? Also, timestamps?

Just trying to see what might be causing some chat elements to not display, while allowing others to display normally.

Also, it is a very long shot and probably won’t be fruitful to solving the issue, but do you happen to be running your game in fullscreen mode? (not windowed fullscreen)

Also, is this only an issue while in WvW areas or while in Open World PvE areas? I’ve seen players having chat issues while in WvW before, but it was mainly all chats not appearing after being there for a long period of time, not specific chats not appearing in the chat box from the get-go.

This may be related to this Guild issue from a while ago coupled with the currently bugged offline/online settings that many are experiencing. You may be set to online, but hovering on your name in the chat box shows you as offline.

Happened to a friend, while we were partied together.
/say worked both ways. I’m guessing, but so did /map.
What he said in /party didn’t go through (and /guild) nor could he see it.
Whispers said he was offline, but he could whisper me.
He still showed in party to me, although I didn’t see him in the guild list.
Logging in/out fixed it, but then it happened to me a minute later.

On this guild chat bug thread, one way to fix the guild chat is to leave the guild and rejoin it. This process seems to fix that issue so it is possible that it will fix yours if it is the one you are encountering.

Still digging up more info.

Are you an EU player playing on an NA server? If so, then this may be tied to the ongoing issue of EU players on NA servers displaying as offline even though they are set to online, which bugs guild chats, party chats and whispers as well as even getting into parties or dungeons, etc. Though the same issues are also present for same area players; EU on EU, NA on NA.

Wow tons of stuff here, thanks for taking your time to try and help. I will do my best to keep the replies organized below.

My chat box is in the lower-left [I think default?] position. I moved it to top-left but the problem remained.

I was on what I think are default settings – Medium font, no timestamp or tag or profanity filter. Changed each of those individually but none helped.

Just to repeat, the map + local + emote channels are all visible and I can even send messages, myself, to those.

For Guild and Party, I do not see any messages – including my own. They are being sent though, since others tell me they receive them.

For whisper, I can see the message that I’ve sent to someone but I cannot see any reply they might’ve sent.

I play in windowed mode [not windowed fullscreen, just a shrunk window]. When I change to fullscreen, there is no change in behavior.

WOW COOL. I wasn’t able to find that, for some reason, but it sounds like we had/have the same problem. I’ll send the OP a PM and check on his status and possible resolution. Thanks a bunch.

This one has enough differences that I don’t think it is related. People can see the messages I send, and they can whisper me back successfully. I just can’t see any of the things they send or reply with. And to your offline online question, I asked someone and they say that I appear ‘Online’ when my name is hovered over in Friends and Guild lists.

I am NA on NA server [SBI] I can join parties, but I haven’t tried to join a dungeon in a while since it’s hard to describe to people that I won’t be able to talk to them in Party Chat lol….

Absolutely my pleasure! I love troubleshooting obscure issues, possibly because of the challenge (printer issues were my forte in tech support years ago, the kryptonite of the other techs). And thank you for replying in such an orderly and detailed (and friendly) manner! I have to say, so far yours has been my favorite bug to troubleshoot yet, though I’m sorry you still have the bug and I gain pleasure at your expense

I’ll keep looking to see if I can find an actual resolution somewhere that is related to that specific issue as you’ve noted that thread as experiencing the same issue. I hope you can get a response from that OP to see if their issue was resolved, that if they went through support and had their issue fixed, that they can inform you of how support fixed their issue.

He mentions the same issue for his account as yours, but when his brother logged into his own account on the same installation of the game, they did not suffer from the issue. So it is not an installation issue, but seems to be tied to the offline/online issue for your account.

Have you attempted to mark yourself as “Looking For Group” and then trying to chat in guild/party yet? Or Marking yourself as “Looking For Group” and then closing and reopening your game and then talking in guild/party chat?

I almost recreated the issue for myself when toggling between Online and Invisible. If you are set to talk in guild chat and you mark yourself as “Invisible”, then your chat changes to talking in “Say” as you cannot talk in guild chat if you are invisible/offline.
I then manually changed it to guild chat and typed something and got a response of “You are not in a guild”. I then changed from “Invisible” to “Looking For Group” and attempted to say something in guild chat and my online presence was automatically changed from “Looking For Group” to “Online”. Perhaps this can trick it into forcing you into being fully recognized as being online and fix your chats.

Just to see if it fixes your chat:

  1. Set yourself as Invisible.
  2. Try to talk in Guild Chat and get the “You are not in a guild” message.
  3. Set yourself to “Looking For Group” and try chatting in guild chat again.
    Does your status remain as “Looking For Group” or does it change to “Online”?
    Either way, can you see what you sent to guild chat?

Tried the LFG / invisible shenanigans you suggested but it didn’t do anything productive.

I am finally getting a good dialogue with tech support, and they have a couple diagnostics reports of mine to work with now. They thought it might be a routing issue and had me plug directly into the modem WAN port, which I did, but no positive result came of it.

I would find it a bit hilarious if at the end of all this, it was something broken on my provider’s side of things…will keep you posted.

Definitely give your ISP a ring, ask if they block ports. Also ask support what port these functions use.

I am also having this EXACT same issue. It has made me not want to play the game very much lately… Also, after you deleted your settings file, did the client retain your exact same chat tab settings? It seems to have retained mine even after deleting the Local.dat file. Please, can we get a fix for this?

I am also having this EXACT same issue. It has made me not want to play the game very much lately… Also, after you deleted your settings file, did the client retain your exact same chat tab settings? It seems to have retained mine even after deleting the Local.dat file. Please, can we get a fix for this?

Just to give an update, my ticket has been idle for a couple weeks now. I contacted Gaile Gray to see if maybe she could help me/us with getting some attention.

Last activity, they had asked if they could be allowed to log into my account to experience the issue locally. I gave them permission, but it hasn’t happened yet as far as I can tell.

For your question about settings maintained, I will delete mine again today after work and report back for you.

Since a few days I am suffering from the exact same issue. It is extremely frustrating as a guild leader, especially since we have a guild mission night coming up which will be impossible for me to lead…

So far I have tried the following:

  • Checked the chat-tab settings to make sure /party and /guild were enabled
  • Logged out and back in to different characters
  • Set status to offline/online
  • Rebooted my computer
  • Guested on a different server
  • Ran guild wars 2 with -repair
  • Reinstalled the game from scratch
  • Turned off all downloads
  • Completely disabled my firewall
  • Ran the connection through a VPN to rule out weird ISP issues

Nothing helps. I finally submitted a support ticket, supplying GameAdvisor logs and received the following reply:

Thank you for contacting our team about a game issue that you experienced.

The Guild Wars 2 Development Team is aware of this issue and team members currently are working on addressing it. Please keep an eye on the official forums for any future updates and announcements regarding Guild Wars 2.

GW2 is an amazing game, but this bug is absolutely game breaking for a social player like myself and honestly quite unacceptable. I am hoping this problem gets fixed soon and if anyone finds a solution, please do share!

Well, that’s about the best reply they could give IMO. I have gone about two months now with this issue and only about a week ago has progress finally been made – they logged into my account to replicate the behavior locally, and said they had some ideas and to let them know if the issue was still there after 48hr.

Obviously, it was still there or we both wouldn’t be here right now, and I let them know as much. But I am at least happy that it has some of their focus because, as you said, it is one of the more game-breaking things to have happen. Who knows how many whispers I have missed from people, or guild events announced through guild chat?

Same Bug here, EU, tried about everything you guys posted in this Thread.
Bug started around the time when the Guild System was broken (only 1 Member in Guild…)
Since then im not able to read my own Whispers / Posts in Guild / Party Chat.
Let’s hope they will soon find a solution to this.

This is the issue I started having as of two days ago. A friend was nice enough to find this thread for me and point me towards it. I see this has been ongoing for some time now. Is there any fix for this?

It’s kind of game breaking not being able to communicate in game.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

Here’s what I have done:

+ran repair twice on GW2
+reinstalled GW2 clean twice
+rolled back my settings to a date before this started happening
+checked all the settings in game, checked/unchecked stuff, invis/visible, left guild/reentered guild

The response to my ticket was to either put in an “in game bug report” or detail my issue on the forum. They offered no fix outside of those two recommendations.

If someone has had this issue and found a solution, would greatly appreciate what you did to fix it.

Edited to add: I’m wondering if the bug is that the game thinks you are invis when you’re not (I’ve checked with friends, they can see me online and have replied to my whispers, I just can’t see any of their replies), because the behaviour is similar — you can send whispers, but you cannot see any replies. Is there a way to manually fix this for each affected account?

So I just logged into my other account and whispers are working fine on that account. It’s the same computer and same launching of GW2, so it appears this whisper bug is tied to the account. Which makes me think the game thinks this account is invisible online all the time and is causing this issue.

Any way to manually reset my status .. I’m thinking this might fix it for me and others experiencing this.

I am having the same issue with Party/Guild/Whisper chat. I keep getting a message saying my firewall may be blocking.. even after my firewall is disabled. So, I am not sure if any of you have had that same issue?

Screen shot isn’t going to show you much, other than a one-sided conversation where you’re sending whispers and no responses.

Mine isn’t a firewall issue. Have literally tried everything possible on my end to fix this. And the fact that whispers work on one account and not the other indicates it’s a problem on Anet’s end.

Hi all,

While I’m sad that so many others are having the same issue, it does make me feel a little bit happier to know that it wasn’t an isolated incident. I’ve been on vacation for a couple weeks and haven’t been able to keep appraised of the status. There is still no resolution for me, though I have gotten a few more emails from support asking me whether it is fixed.

The last one said that they had performed server maintenance with the latest [halloween] LS update, and asked whether it had fixed things [it hadn’t]. Theirs was sent a few weeks back but I wasn’t able to reply until a couple days ago, so I haven’t seen any more on the issue since.

As for the latest discussion in this thread about where the problem source is, I can tell you that the developers have logged into my account from their end to replicate the issue, doing so successfully, so it is definitely not a client or PC issue and, rather, an account issue as has been surmised already by a few here.

All told, I have been living with this issue for probably 3-4 months with no fix. I am not sure if this is because it hasn’t had exposure, or if it’s just that hard for them to diagnose and fix. Ideally, the growing number of you that are reporting the same issue in this thread will improve the resolution time for us all, so please don’t hesitate to chime in if it’s happening to you!

edit: For those of you who have an active support ticket about this, could you please add to your dialog a reference to this thread, so that they can keep track of the similarities and extent of those affected?

I just wanted to just briefly touch base with you regarding your chat issues. The inability to see chat appears to be related to a larger issue which we are working to correct. I apologize for our lack of response to your ticket, rest assured we have been and are continuing to investigate this issue.

In addition to this, we have been making significant changes to our support system. Because of these changes, we are moving all tickets over to a new ticketing system. This new system should allow us to keep better track of issues like yours. For your records, and for our own, I have included a full summary of the correspondence regarding your chat issues so that we can track this issue in the new system.

We will keep you posted directly if and when there are any significant updates to the situation. Please let us know if you have any questions in the meantime.

I understand you are having issues with the whisper function in game. The next time that you’re in the game and you find a bug, you can do us a favor by submitting an in-game bug report. This will send detailed information about your character and your position directly to our Quality Assurance Team and will help us kitten the issue as promptly as possible. To submit a bug report in the game, simply click on the “Game Menu” button in the upper left-hand corner of the game interface, then choose the “Support” option on the Game Menu. That option will allow you to review known issues, report a bug, or contact Customer Support.
You’re also welcome to report a game issue in the Game Bugs sub-forum of the Guild Wars 2 Forums ( http://support.guildwars2.com/forum/support/bugs ). You may include screenshots with your forum report, if you wish to do so. While we are unable to respond directly to each bug report that we receive on the forums or through the game interface, each report is reviewed and escalated, when appropriate.
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know about this issue.
