"One Good Drink Deserves Another" - Bug
Same here, just started playing today and became stuck in this quest.
Same as the others, the enemy that runs up and calls of the minotaurs’ release does not become hostile, being as all the enemies have to be killed this prevents the quest from finishing.

why haven’t they rolled back to a previous version that did not have this problem?
Roll back what part of the software? To quote Jeffrey’s post a week ago: the story step hasn’t changed in months. That’s indicating some unwanted and unexpected interdependency with some other part of the game code, but which one? And a complete rollback of the game is out of the question. Or do you want to explain to all the rangers out there they’re stuck again for a while with their bugged pets which have been fixed just yesterday? Not to mention all the other minor fixes and improvements we’ve been presented with during the last four weeks.
After all we talk about a minor inconvenience, don’t we? No problem to ignore the personal storyline till it’s fixed and play other content in the meantime. Or to play another (non-Norn) character’s personal story till then. My Norn twink struck by this issue just hit the level cap; my first lvl80 character that hasn’t joined one of Tyria’s orders, something of a premiere for me :-)
Roll back what part of the software?
The part that they changed.
Before committing any code or software change they should have kept a backup of the working copy (code, script files, database, virtual server, etc.)
If they don’t have a backup they should have at least documented and kept a log of what they change. This helps in the troubleshooting process.
In my experiences I have dumped software companies that do not practice these procedures when offering SaaS or any type of maintenance support.
Oh, they do a proper version control developement for sure. Whether they are as sloppy as I am with documentation, I don’t know :-) But again: You really think there’s somewhere in their documentation a piece saying “release abc for module xyz containing the break of Norn personal storyline”?
Some time, probably four weeks, ago they rolled out some piece of code (among a lot of others) with some specific purpose, improving this or fixing that. Unfortunately this piece of code had side effects for the Norn personal storyline. First task now is to find out what code module back than did cause our issue in question. That’s most of the time the really tricky part. Only then you would have the option for a partial roll-back instead of a proper bugfix. Rolling back all changes made back then would be a complete roll-back of the game code which is out of the question as said.
Now, even if you’ve identified the somehow faulty piece of code, a roll-back still might be out of question. What if it contains a fix for some other, much bigger problem in the game? What if dozens or maybe hundreds of modules modified since then depend on that piece of code?
Complex software rarely can be fixed with simple solutions, I fear.

couse i’m kinda getting close to that 80 but stuck on a lvl 10 quest
The quest is even more broken now, it bugs out at the fistfight. They attack each other before the dialogue and then they stand there without a care in the world!
Same issue. This sucks. I just want to get past this part.
(Norn personal story lvl 10) Basically you give the ale, release minotaurs, kill all the sons of svanir…. but some of them are still ‘green’ or ‘non attackable’. Have tried bringing in another person to instance and still no change. Please fix this ^.^
Also stuck on ‘Diciples of the Dragon’. Really disappointing for a new player.
This quest still bugged, and even worse. I found two of the Sons of Svanir can not be targeted at the same time after the release of minotaurs.
The other way of the quest is buggy aswell >.<.

The team was able to figure out what the problem is and there will be a fix “soon”.
I dont like that “soon”. I hope it is actualy soon.

Yeah I can’t really give dates other than “soon” because then the pitchforks will come out if something happens on the way to getting the fix out to live… “soon” will have to do.
Soon is something. Soon its good. I’m sure they want to push this fast considering how old the bug is .
At disciples of the dragon it´s already fixed I don´t know if its fixed at the other.

If you give the norn at the minataur fence his ale last, you’re able to open the gate
and defeat some norn, but alas the last norn still remains ‘friendly’ and thus the
instance can not be finished.
Really hope it gets patched soon

Jormag, right? Okay jokes aside (or not jokes?), can we get info what was faulty? If that’s not secret of course
Now I think about it, if we would find some other place where another Norn is stuck in non-targetable mode it would give a hint that maybe indeed something in their “race” is broken, but now that the ArenaNet knows what was wrong, I guess that hide and seek fun is deprecated. (Deprecated, I love that word).
It’s great to hear that the bug is getting ironed soon, that gives me some inspiration to try ironing few bugs in my little projects too. Double Thank You

So happy I’m not the only one this has happened to.
Very disheartening that it’s taken 31 days to get to the point where the word “soon” is even bandied about on the fix. Oh well. I’ll just do everything else and try that out again next month.

Okay, i tried it today again, and on my second try, that freaking greenman became red and managed to complete it.
i freaked out, as i accidentally killed one in the brawl as the burn was still in effect
Not too sure how ProfRoxas accomplished a complete. I went in after I read the post of his completion and tried several times with the same broken AI ‘geen man’ effect and was not able to complete the step. This was as of 4/19/15 15:51 MST. So as far as I can tell, there is no fix in place as of this time.
i only remember i first served the right one, then the one at the fence, for last the brawl, and i accidentally killed one son with burn, then i opened the fence, waited for the son and both turned red, dunno if it helps
New player here.
Had the BAD luck of chosing this path for my ranger norn. It sucks because I’m also stuck at that stupid ONE svanir son NOT turning green so I can attack and complete the Story quest. It’s really messed up and defeats the whole point of having a personal story, when a bug is preventing me from choosing what -I- want. I’m quite disappointed, and I hope this bug truly is fixed “soon”… and by soon, I hope it’s not within months.
Seriously… Not a nice “first impression” for new players.
Looks like the son of svanir who comes after (the one who is getting knocked by minotaurs) doesn’t finish his speech and the other son of svanir (coming out of a tent) turns hostile alone. Maybe if the first could finish his speech, both would turn hostile !

That’s it, that’s the bug i got, and i think that’s the bug everyone got.
I dont know, looks like some speech codes got lost in the recent updates, and that lines were able to turn him red\aggressive.
i think im gona ding 80 today and stuck on a lvl 10 quest.
But they did teach me to become a patient man. :P
Yep I chose this story path too unfortunately. Oh well, at least once it’s fixed I’ll be able to blitz the personal story as I’ll have all traits etc by then.

I have just sent in a bug report with it. My boyfriend have encountered several of these “npc not turning hostile” in other personal stories as well but attacking them fixed it. I have tried about everything on this one, and I cannot complete the main quest. I finally made up my mind to make a norn character and this is very annoying. As well as I see now, that the posts are 20 days old and there is still no reaction from anet....×.x

You don’t need to defend the developers, I think they are very well capable of doing that themselves.
Obviously some of us is more annoyed by this then other people but we are not the same. It is still not fixed, it is on my last char slot, have used some tomes on her and since I have explored the map and done all kind of stuff on my other chars I really would only want to play the storyline because I find that the most enjoyable.

I’m sure they could defend themselves. IMHO they have more important things to do, though, e.g. fix this bug, don’t you think? :-)
Hitting 80 Today with a level 10 story quest!
I just got stuck on this today so if anyone is wondering if its fixed yet, its not.
My friend has run into a problem with part of her Norn’s lvl 10 personal story, titled One Good Drink Deserves Another.
After the step where you release the minotaurs from the enclosure, they stampede down the hill. In doing so, they trample over a Son of Svanir. This guy then gets up, runs up the path towards the now open enclosure to alert the other Sons of Svanir that the minotaurs have escaped.
Sons of Svanir then begin filing out of the tents and you have to defeat all of them.
Simple.
However, ONE OF THEM GETS BUGGED EVERY TIME.
The Son of Svanir that ran up the hill to alert the others of the escape. He goes green, gets a star over his head, and just walks around. You can’t attack him or engage him in any way, even after all of the others are defeated. Can’t even talk to him either. We’ve tried leaving the instance and doing it again, but it keeps happening no matter what we do. It’s definitely been giving her a massive headache since she can’t further her personal story because of this.
Has anyone else experienced this issue recently that chose to get the Sons drunk instead of disguising yourself as a minotaur?…
Hope this gets fixed soon. This is my first time playing and I really like the game so far, but this is just frustrating to say the least. Guess I’ll keep checking this thread each day for updates. Hopefully there will be some good news tomorrow.

For those of us that made the ‘wrong’ choice, why not just let us start the level 10 Personal Story over and we’ll make the ‘right’ choice this time, move on with the Personal Story, and stop tying up this months-long thread.
Just let us start the Personal Story over, we’ll make the choice that works, and everybody wins.

@MolagBal.3596 ignoring that the problem exists will not solve it. I also don’t see how I win in wasting a lv 20 scroll and the time already spent on the prior quests
I’m in the same boat. I submitted a bug report before discovering this thread. I have attempted the quest 3 times, the first two resulted in getting stuck at the “Kill the Sons of Svanir” portion after releasing the minotaurs. I killed all of the hostile Sons, but two remained non-hostile “green” NPCs and the quest no longer progressed. On the third try, it got stuck at the “Get the Sons of Svanir drunk with ale from the cart” portion, when those two NPCs still remained and did not progress to the part where you open the gate.
Discovering this thread was painfully disappointing. Thus far, on all other characters, my experience has been great. Not sure how it can be taking so long to resolve this.
