I know all the posts about this come up with responses with workarounds that don’t work. I tried half a dozen and none worked, holding me back for a week, but I managed to get through it tonight, so I hope this works for you.

What I did differently in the run that succeeded was, after telling the Asuran researcher (Renk?) that we had to get them out of the cave, I walked back against the cave wall to wait for Trehearne to come up, puff out his chest, and give his little “I, the leader, shall save you!” speech, instead of running right out to aggro the grubs that started spawning. Only when he stopped talking did I go out to fight, and they came with me for once.

Maybe I just finally got lucky, but I hope it helps you, since I definitely feel for you.

After rescuing the second set of researchers, I am supposed to go south to the exit with Trahearne. They aren’t moving. I’ve cleared the tunnels, there are no undead but the NPCs will not move to the south exit.

I tried it again (5th attempt), still no go. The researchers move immediately to kill a bug, but after its dead they move right back. Tried clearing the cave before entering, making sure Trahearne was alive and following, still nothing. This is frustrating enough that I don’t feel like playing the game anymore.. Please fix.

Ergh, doesn’t work for me. It’s such a long quest and to get to that part only to have it bug out is beyond frustrating. The PvE in this game is seriously just potato.

Still bugged for me. Although I don’t find the quest too difficult (havn’t had to spend repairs on it yet for my multiple attempts), It’s incredibly frustrating getting to the end only to have the researchers REFUSE TO FOLLOW YOU OUT AFTER YOU’VE SPENT 5 MINUTES CLEARING THE CAVE.

Seriously. The PvE is starting to really annoy me in this game..

Just tried this quest twice in a row and the research team refuses to follow no matter what I do. I have clearned out all mobs, listened to Trahearne speech but the only NPC that follows me is him. This is fustrating ArenaNet, the quest is NOT fixed and you should not need to try “special” things just to get a quest to work. Fix your quest scripts as well as Trahearne AI because it’s terribile, he goes and gets stuck on everything.

thank you for saying you fixed this issue in the patch notes for me to run it again to a certain point and waste another 25 minutes of my time with this kitten.

I did this instance with a friend and the NPC’s don’t follow then either.

Also every time a risen grub was killed it flashed up huge red letters about ‘content not available at this time, try again later.’ would love this fixed as I’m keen to play through the story.

Today, i had the same issue with this quest… Kinda sucks really bad because i was at the 2nd crew, then my internet went out…didnt even know about the bug at this point… So i got dc’ed then had to do it again. Now, im to 2nd krew and they wont follow. C’MON ANET! I love the game a ton, but this kinda sucks :/

Just finished the quest. The first time we got stuck at the same place. Second time (with my hubby initiating the quest) we ignored the 2nd team and cleared the cave as advised. After we came back and helped the 2nd team with the abomination, 2 sets of really buggy (pun intended) grubs spawned. I thought “Oh man, they are doing the robot… we are going to glitch again.” I ran up to them thinking if my husband stayed back the team wouldn’t glitch. But the whole team came racing up behind me to fight. After that, we just inched down the cave step by step, inch by inch. I kept turning around to look and they would periodically get stuck but them move again. We got to the end of the cave and the cutscenes continued.

I have read the majority of the posts on here with suggestions, tips, do this, don’t do that and I really think it comes down to the luck of the draw. Sorry to you all that keep glitching I hope this gets fixed so you can move on.

Tried two times yesterday, still bugged, nothing happens in front of the barricade

Wow that was annoying, got it on the 4th.

Once I shadowstepped into a rock (that happens a lot) the other 2 time I got stuck between talking to kekt with the 2nd research team and the point where that treehorn noob summons his minions. The team would not follow.

Babysitting the plot salad seemed to help as per the suggestions here. After talking to kekt I stuck by nerco noob (while he stroked he big ey sword) and made sure he didn’t die.

Did he die the previous times? I don’t know, probably. I’m a thief, first sign of trouble I cloak and run. On the first attempt I managed to miss several triggers that I had to go back for, the cave exit wasn’t even blocked at first.

I any case, next time I hope mother tree gives me the sword instead, as apposed to simply forgetting me entirely. Seriously, I’m a tree too and it and it goes from “My beloved child for whom I have great interest” to “Hey, you there!”. Weak guys… weak.

The researchers following you or not does indeed seem to be totally random. I have tried this missions around 5 times over the last few weeks and today finally got through. I did not do anything differently from before.

My advice to people still stuck is to just give up on the personal story and come back in a few months when this post-release beta test is over.
Because after weeks of effort (and dozens of silver in repair and teleportation costs) I am now stuck in the immediate follow-up quest … nothing in this game past level ~60 seems to work correctly.

this is very very long part of the story,

the problem is when some part bugs out completely or the client disconnects, I have to do everything again and again from the start…

there is a bug on the cinematic cut scenes that sometimes they don’t start or disconnect after they finish
the part when you reach the blocked path, the cut scene don’t start, because the priory guys don’t move and don’t follow me, I had to start all over again.

then the next time, I reach the end, Mr broccoli head gives his speech, and the game disconnects before the grand finale…

really frustrating!!!!!

this part should be cut to several parts, if i finished one, it should remember that i did it..

P.S.
there is also the issue that after weekends almost all world events and skill points are bugged …

please restart the servers once in a while…

It seems there’s a glitch where trahearne does not help out in battle, he just stands there….he is not targeted, and he doesnt attack. It’s like hes oblivious to everything going on around him. Please look into this thanks.

the research team in the caverns are doing the same thing as well, this whole story quest is bugged.

Just search the forums for this bug, they are full of threads about it.
It is a well known bug and should finally be fixed after the patch today.

This is absurd. The patch notes about Forging the Pact being fixed is just plain wrong. This quest still bugs at the exact same place as before the patch, blocking progress. Here is a screen shot. This is the exact same reported progress block as before the patch.

What’s especially irritating is how long it takes just to get to this point, and I was not going to try this again until a patch fixes it. How wonderful it is to find that it is still bugged, and to add to the insult, it bugs at the exact same place.

samething happen to me… this is frustrating, i’m now level 80 and have to go back to lower level quest to finish my story…

Confirmed. This quest in general is boring and pretty difficult, and then for it to STILL bug out makes it incredibly frustrating. The patch notes are flat out incorrect — this but is NOT fixed.

Yup. Stuck at the same point. This is getting ridiculous. I hate this quest, it wasn’t even fun the first time.

Just tried it again at 6:15am EST and while the first team now follows me to the southern exit we just stand there. Trahearne says “protect me” but nada. One member of the team from the first cave and one member from the original crewe in the hut stayed behind. Sigh.

EDIT: just saw this got fixed in the update!

PS: It didn’t get fixed at all.

I’m in the same boat. I was hoping to finish this mission today but, as you say, it’s still impossible :-(

looks like the only thing that got fixed is the un-named NPCs follow me now. the story character, Crusader Afanen, won’t follow and stays where the cave group was. still can’t get out from the southern exit, which is where the quest tells me to go.

This was bugged for me the first time I did it, but that was when i rushed ahead of the group before they got to the green points, So i took it slow and stayed with them and it didnt bug.

the really stupid NPCs will not follow, once again I cannot complete.

so, I ask myself is it really worth carrying on with any Personal Story ?

I have to admit that I think I’m missing something here, because I did Forging the Pact this morning on my warrior and completed it; the only issue I had was that I went the wrong way and fumbled around for about 15 minutes until I figured out that I needed to go back into the cave and go to the blocked exit. I think what would help is a walkthrough, step by step, by the players who are having problems completing the chapter, because from my (admittedly scattershot) review of the threads it seems like something small but important is being missed by some players that’s causing them to not be able to proceed. One thing that you might need to look at is whether you’re going all the way up to the top of the slope where the first group of researchers is, breaking through the barricades and entering the lean-to at the top of the slope (which triggers, if my faulty memory serves, a brief cutscene). In short, I think “Forging the Pact” might be one of those things where you need to do everything in a certain sequence or it doesn’t work right.

I did this quest on my warrior this morning and succeeded the first time; the only real issue I had was that I got confused on where the southern exit was and wandered around for about 15 minutes until I figured out I had to go back into the cave.

Seems to me that you need to do three basic things:

1) Follow all the steps that the game gives you (in the upper right corner of the screen).
2) Related to that, hit all the locations that the game points you to. In particular, going up to the top of the slope where the first group of researchers is/breaking through the barricades/popping in and out of the lean-to at the top of the slope might be a requirement to trigger the next step.
3) Make sure that the NPC’s are able to deliver all their dialogue and that all the cutscenes play out. SuperSonic pointed out something potentially very important here; after the second team is located, Trahearne gives a brief cutscene, two sentences, but if you engage in combat immediately after reaching the team, he might not be able to do that cutscene and that might block the quest from completing.

The message “That content has been temporarily disabled” has nothing whatsoever to do with this specific quest. I assume you saw it when killing risen grubs; as pointed out in many other places, it was part of a fix ANet was putting in place to deter people who were overfarming risen grubs.

To GW2:

About the Forging the Pact mission, I believe there’s a bug when you are almost at the end of the mission, where you have to escort the second team towards the south exit. But when I arrived at the south exit, there’s barricade blocking the exit and furthermore, nothing happens when I arrive at the south exit (no NPC blowing the barricade up, Treahearne doing nothing, or no indication that you have to speak to Treahearne when you are at the south exit).

I would appreciate if you guys would look into this issue. Thank you.

I have am having the same issue. I just tried the quest again, and it still is broken for me…I get all the team to the barricade, but they just stand around, doing nothing. It is partially fixed, I guess, because they never used to follow me.

Glad to hear that I’m not the only one having this issue. Hey Spleenie do you notice that only some of the team comes with you but while 4-5 other NPC is still on the site where you saved the second team inside the cave? I thought all of them will follow you towards the south exit…

Yeah, just tried it again for the heck of it a few minutes ago and 2 of the guys remained behind this time. It is so weird.

Have you tried doing these storyline with another player?

So they lied: it’s still bugged. After my third run-through, AGAIN I’m stuck at the barricade, as the researchers refuse to follow me.

Tried again this morning and same problem. I tried waiting for trahern to talk after saving the second team but he never did stood there for 5 mins had no agro wasnt in combat. After it did appear that everyone was following me but after i engaged the first grub that spawns and killed it half of them ran back to the second camp and were stuck there stopping any trigger at the end of the cave. This has been a solid month now ive been trying to complete this im over it. Ive lost all motivation to play any other part of the game

Against my better judgment, I tried this quest for a fourth time, investing another hour-plus of my life. This time I tried waiting for Trahearne to catch up to me before I spoke to the second research team. Then I waited for Trahearne to deliver his two little chat-bubble speeches about exiting the cave together. Although the NPCs in my party already were engaging the grubs, I held my fire. Miraculously, it worked! I was able to complete the mission. Trahearne died during this play-thru, but I was still able to complete it. So I think the “wait for Trahearne to speechify” workaround was the key for me.

Sounds like it didn’t work for you, Karate. I have no idea what to suggest. If I were A.net, I’d be making this a top-priority fix, because it’s such a long quest. People are wasting LOTS of time on this. It’s a good way to make people frustrated and unhappy with the game.

Same issue here. Blocking progress as all the little midgets sit in the back. Done this several times now… aggravating.

Same. Stuck at south gate. A handful of researchers are stuck behind and won’t follow. Fail.

Have attempted this twice, both times the researchers have hung back at the cave and Trahearne does nothing at the gate.

(Oh and both attempts were after the latest patch.)

i have this problem twice now. Trahearne was alive at the end via revive but some of my other followers would not follow after meeting in the cave i think it’s the red head she wouldn’t follow me and i think that’s why i could not end it. even managed to get around by jumping off the wall and back again. still no luck. warrior class.

I almost gave up last night, since I followed SuperSonic’s advice until I decided to try again(fifth attempt), which I succeeded and completed this mission.

Here’s what SuperSonic Advised in his previous post, with my additional input in parentheses:

For those who can’t get the 2nd team to follow, please try this -

1. Clear out the area of enemies where the 2nd team is located. No need to clear out the whole cave.

2. Walk all the way into the room where 2nd team is gathered. Do this to avoid getting into combat with the grub that will spawn later just outside the cave.
(For this I have done a little differently, if you are able to see a small entrance to a cave where the 2nd team is, lure that abomination to that small entrance to the cave and Trehearne will follow you to that cave to avoid the spawn later)

3. Talk to the 2nd Team leader and trigger the next part of the quest.
(I don’t know if this really matters, but I talked to Trehearne first then the 2nd team leader and I also don’t know if this matters but engage in conversation with the 2nd team by asking the two questions before you click and trigger the next event)

4. Important: Wait for Trehearne to give his speech. Do not enter combat or aggro the Grub until he finishes talking! (I CAN NOT EMPHASIZE THIS STEP ENOUGH! XD, Trehearne will say something after you trigger the next event from the 2nd team leader, then all of the 2nd team will follow you)

5. The 2nd team should now follow.

I completed this story quest on my Elementalist yesterday and had no issues with it at all other than it is completely overtuned. Still have yet to attempt it on my ranger until I get him a couple of more levels.

Tried this twice now, before and after the patch, and both times the second research team gets stuck. Also, on this run the Vigil npc got stuck near the team as well. Really bothersome, and I don’t really want to go through the instance again and again just to see if some of the provided tricks work. For difficulty it isn’t bad (I’m a lvl59 necro), but I really can’t bother to invest all that time, at least not at once.

I finished this quest with my Engineer the first week and ran into no problems. After hearing a lot of people having trouble, I was worried when I did it with my Mesmer yesterday. Worked fine.

Then again, I didn’t die in the mission. I hear a lot of the bugs result from when players die and respawn in a mission.
