Personal Story reset!?
In your journal, what does it show for your last 3 story steps? What’s your current objective? What race are you?
Human, last 3 steps are "he Sad Tale of the “Ravenous”, Triskell Quay, and Brute Force. I selected Vigil again and so i am now on Kellach’s Attack.
I was previously at “Cathedral of Silence”, which is level 80.
I only remember where I used to be because I was story questing with a friend and his is still intact.
I’m confused, how did you have “Cathedral of Silence” as your active story step when the last 3 steps you did all lead up to “Kellach’s Attack”? Did you help someone else do that step, or is it possible you’re mixed up your characters?
No no.
I SHOULD be on Cathedral of Silence,
But now I am pretty much at Kellach’s Attack. I leveled with a friend and we chose the same story path and we were at Cathedral of Silence when we hit level 80.
We took a hiatus, and we’ve now come back, but playing as a Mesmer and Thief. I logged onto my Engineer to notice my story has been backtracked all the way to Kellach’s Attack.
So essentially, I should be at Cathedral of Silence, but now I am at Kellach’s attack.
Sorry for the confusion, but it seems as if something glitched and i’ve lost all my story progress.
What’s the last entry in your journal BEFORE the skip back?
My suspicion is that at some point you weren’t actually on the same story step as your friend, so you stayed on that step while you helped him/her progress. For example:
You’re on step A. Your friend is on step B. You can help them do steps B,C, and D, and they will be on E, but you’ll still be on A. Your journal won’t display A,B,C, or D, because you didn’t receive credit for completing them as part of your story.
Hopefully that makes sense.
Its hard for me to recall correctly… but I do remember 100% that I did the story quest in Orr that gave me the Exquisite Ruby Jewel as the reward… after doing the giants and tanks.
I know I was further in but unfortunately its hard for me to be 100%. My friend and I made sure we progressed our stories equally. Like i said, we were at the same point in our story(Cathedral of Silence) but my memory only can confirm I had done Armor Guard for certainty, as i had received the jewel reward for it.
Is it in your quest journal?
The only quest related letter i still have in my mailbox is from Logan Thackery discussing Tonn’s death. 8 months old. Which is clearly ahead of where i actually am.
My journal says Kellach’s attack.
Is Armor Guard in your journal at all?
No, its not. The journal only goes as far as Kellach’s attack.
As I stated above, what it sounds like then is you were never credited with advancing your own story, even if you were helping a friend advance theirs. So even though you remember getting as far as you did, your character’s story never got that far.
If your story steps are synced up, then you should see a message box after each instance asking if you want to advance your story or stay on that step.
Have you been seeing that message?
If you haven’t been seeing it, were you the one who started the instances?

We alternated starting them up so I do know we advanced together. Aka i’d get the shields and sword and the box to pick my rewards. As stated, i distinctly remember picking my rewards and gaining experience from completing each story quest.
I know for certain that something glitched, but alas if its not going to be fixed then I will simply just plow through it all again, despite how ridiculous this all is.
That logic also doesn’t explain why I have a letter from Logan Thackery triggered from “Breaking the Bone Ship” quest sitting in my mailbox.
So essentially, I have proof of completing “Breaking the Bone Ship” which is significantly further than “Kellach’s Attack”, yet my personal story progress is sitting on “Kellach’s Attack”
Wow. Yeah, that’s messed up.
I’m curious to see how this one plays out. I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up with a compulsory renaming, but there can be little doubt that it’s glitched.
Perhaps this could be an opportunity to replay the story with alternate choices?

Looking at your journal, though, I don’t see any sign that your character completed (and received credit for) any story step aside from the ones leading up to your choice of Order. It looks correct to me, and I stand by my hypothesis that you helped ANOTHER player get far into the story, but you weren’t receiving completion credit for YOUR character’s story.
If he was getting the personal story quest rewards (instead of just karma or whatever you get for helping someone,) surely it was crediting completion.
I would have to respectfully disagree with your hypothesis. What do you make of the screenshot I posted, showing the letter I received for successfully completing “Breaking the Bone Ship”, which I should not have received if I had only helped a friend.
I shouldn’t have that at all if I truly was just at Kellach’s attack. I cannot prove I have the rewards, and if anything, playing through the story again means i can essentially have double, because I know I received them.
I don’t understand what else I can say to end the debate… clearly I’ve lost my story progression and that little letter is all I have for proof. I don’t expect any reimbursement or anything, if possible, i’d simply prefer to be placed where I was, or at least acknowledgement that this is a glitch and I’m not crazy.
Attached again for simplicity’s sake.
I can reaffirm my lost progression as I still have the rifle from the reward of “Against the Corruption”! which is the precursor to “Cathedral of Silence”.
Surely now you cannot consider this a mere sign negligence on my part…
Sorry. I didn’t realize the previous screenie didn’t show the rifle’s information. Heres one i took using Fraps.
As you can see, I have the Potent Avenger’s Rifle of Force in my inventory, which, according to gw2wiki, is the reward for “Against the Corruption” personal story quest, which happens to be the precursor quest to “Cathedral of Silence”.
So, with that said, I didn’t just help a friend progress, I progressed with him since I have the reward for it.
Bumping as its on pg 5
This is an interesting glitch, if it was figured out how to do it you can farm some of the story for good rewards (Sigil of Force, Pirate Rune, Exquisite Ruby Orb)
I’m not sure what resolution you’re looking for… CS (and me) do not have the ability to arbitrarily set your current story step, so we’d have no way to put you on “Cathedral of Silence”. Also, as I said, looking at the log, there are no signs of an incorrect story progression. This is the first I’ve heard of this in the 10 months since release, so I can’t figure out what might have happened. The only advice I can give is “Keep playing”.
probably he just want to let u know about this problem, how he said, he doesnt want any replacement etc. but some ppl could get mad about this glitch…
If he got rolled back in his personal story why is it so unbelievable for you that his journal rolled back too? He gave you 2 pieces of evidence, I don’t see a reason why you still don’t believe him. And for the record, I remember some old posts about people who skipped some story steps and with the help from devs they got it fixed, so there are some instances of issues with story continuity.
I don’t see how you can say there are “no signs” that something’s messed up, Jeffrey. Unless you’re saying you have reason to believe his attached screenshots are heavily modified, he does show that he has a Potent Avenger’s Rifle of Force, rare quality, requiring level 78, which is only obtainable through completion of the level 80 personal storyline mission Against the Corruption (link here), as well as a message from Logan Thackeray that the player only recieves upon completion of the personal storyline mission Breaking the Bone Ship (68) or possibly The Battle of Fort Trinity (70), while clearly showing his personal storyline does not list any missions past Kellach’s Attack (28). You do not get either of the aforementioned items if you do not personally get credited for the completion of the mission, i.e. move on to the next mission in the storyline. There are a lot of “signs” of an incorrect story progression right there.
If you are allergic to these ingredients, do not consume.

I’m not particularly looking for a resolution. At this point, i’m more so just upset on the position you are taking regarding this query. There was infact a bug and it erased my progression. I’ve given two pieces of information indicating there is some sort of bug and yet you persist in suggesting I’m wrong.
Now, i’m not too sure if you’re using the word arbitrary to suggest that what i’ve provided is insufficient, or if you moreso mean that you do not have the administrative control in the game to make the necessary changes… i’m fine with progressing through again and collecting all the rewards, although, that would be (to some) an unfair advantage. At this point, I believe it should be looked into none-the-less, as there was a bug that had to do this and your developers should look into figuring it out.
I would still prefer to be where I was, but alas, it definitely seems like the administrative team is unwilling to correct the problem at hand… its a little bit unfortunate, since the team seems to have no problem fixing “clipping” issues graphically, but to restore a player’s earned progression, its all of a sudden a task too difficult to be bothered with.
Again, as I said, i’ve provided proof and I feel as if the official responses i’ve received have pointed to an unwillingness to provide support, and from how I took your responses, the lack of belief in my credibility. I think the proof provided is just enough to have a somebody look into why this has occurred, whether it be reversible or not, it should be looked into.
To sum it up, I have the rewards and I have a letter indicating my successful progression to where I was, but my log doesn’t indicate as such.
I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. My NIC card at work died, so I don’t have Internet access until IT fixes my system. I’m posting from home.
So I think what happened… You mentioned that the character was on hiatus for a while. When we shipped, there was a bug where it was possible to advance the story without choosing an Order, if you played co-op and the other player picked an Order and you simply followed along. This was fixed shortly after release, but the missing Order caused problems if players tried to play some story steps solo, since the game didn’t know which Order they were in. The only way to fix this was to roll bugged characters back to the “choose an Order” step. This rollback actually happened many months ago, but it’s likely that you weren’t playing the character when it was performed.
I only remembered the rollback because the mail you have from Logan isn’t in the game anymore, so I knew you did that step a long time ago.
So the good news is, you’re good to go—the rollback fixed the issue, and the bug was fixed a while ago, so it won’t hit any new characters.
The bad news is, the rollback is intentional, so you’ll need to play those story steps again. I realize that it’s frustrating, but it was the only safe way we could address the original issue without introducing other bugs.
I did not intend to seem skeptical, and I apologize for that. I was trying to understand exactly what happened, so I could reproduce it and fix it if necessary. If I seemed unwilling to help, it’s simply that I was trying to be clear that I have no ability to set a specific character’s current story step, so I didn’t want you to wait for a fix.

Fair enough, i appreciate the response and the answer. I will carry on and do it again.
I have experienced this issue today. I was getting close to fighting Zaitan and then the story screen (on hero panel) popped up… I closed it thinking it was random, but then the quest I was doing turned out to be the one before cathedral of silence. The weird part is, I am picking up these story quests from parts of Orr I have only just discovered as my story progressed. For example: I did cathedral of silence to try and free Orr, ended up fighting so the pact pushes forward towards Zaitan securing checkpoints. I am now on the West side of Orr, which I only discovered today, and I picked up a quest from that area and it sent me to the cathedral on a repeat of a mission I have already done. Someone came along for like 2 story missions, and they joined my instance, for 95% of my story I have done it alone. Just mentioning as I read that this bug had been fixed, and it is happening in a very strange manor (the missions being in different places etc).
Last week on June 23rd, the personal story was restored to the way it was a year ago. The story before the restoration had too many problems with it. According to Anet … “the Personal Story has been restored to its original order and pacing, with minor improvements added.” This includes missions from Chapter 6-8. You can view the changes in these update notes: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates/Game-Update-Notes-June-23-2015
This is most likely the reason why you are repeating parts of the story. Some missions used to be earlier in the storyline and are now placed back in the original order that makes more sense.
