The tool tip on my fern hound’s “bite” ability (auto attack) says he should be doing
around 36 damage. Yet against even the weakest monsters, he is only doing 8 damage,
sometimes 7.

Needless to say a pet that does 7 damage per hit really isn’t very valuable.

edit: This character is lvl2, but I’ve leveled up other characters, I’m not a newbie.

>I’m lvl2
>Without understanding a single mechanic in the game, I’m opening a thread to complain about the first thing I see and I don’t get.
Boy, how can that go wrong?

And from that experience, you decided to open a thread without testing through? No data to give? Just a reduced damage on an enemy?
There’s a number of factors that can affect to damage, be a bit more extensive if you’re going to claim “bug!”
(Also, if ranger pet damage was broken, with thousands of people playing rangers during 8 months, would be funny if you were to discover it after 5 mins of gameplay on your level 2 ranger).

I did have ranger characters before, this is just the first time I noticed this. Please don’t
call people newbies if you know nothing about them. I played since the very launch day, in fact earlier than that since I bought the deluxe edition.

I tested on about eight different enemies, damage was always 7 or 8, while the tool tip
stated 34.

If you don’t believe me, make a lvl1 ranger and test it at the enemies right at the start.
Hit “K” to check the pet tool tip and compare it to the actual damage it does.

I also noticed how every time I level up, the damage shown by the tooltip, goes down,
even though my pet stats go up.

First it said 36, then 34, then 30, now 24.

Most likely it is some kind of tool tip bug at low levels I guess. I doubt the damage itself
is broken.

just because Zysmon hasn’t played ranger for more than 20 minutes it doesn’t make his point any less valid.

I would suggest however, level up your ranger a bit more and see if this tooltip (and desired output) changes each level, you may find it’s only bugged at level 2, and as such would put this at a very low priority on the bug fix list.

But also note, that the numbers on most tooltips for attacks is almost always incorrect, as there are so many other mitigating factors which come into play.

Try testing this on a rabbit or other critter, as they have zero defences

Progress blocking bugs are top priority, but not all bugs are so easy to fix as others, be cool :)

I have played the ranger profession across several characters by the way, this is just the
first time I noticed it. Like I said I have been playing since launch day, I was the first person to find the crossfire “bug” for example when they slowed the rate of fire.

But yeah I guess it isn’t a very urgent bug, just weird tool tip behavior at low levels.

of course, as I said your point is valid and possibly true, however it’s worth testing on a critter to be 100% sure, as other animals have damage mitigating factors.

if on a critter the ability is not doing as intended, it’s either a tooltip error or unintended bug.

(ps. I would make a new ranger to test but my character slots are all full!)

Damage on critters is a lot higher than what the tool tip says the damage should be,
so I’m not sure why trying it on a critter would help? Or is it different when a pet hits
a critter?

I don’t think there is any monster at starting areas that reduces damage from 34 to 7,
so it can’t be anything but a tool tip bug.

The fluctuation in tool tip damage after leveling is a result of scaling. Scaling blithely assumes you not only gained a level but also suddenly had all your gear stats upgraded to some assumed “max” point for your actual level. Which results in the amusingly counterintuitive issue of having LOWER stats than you did a second before. Maybe this happens in other games, I don’t know, but it’s the only game I’ve ever played that functionally smacks you down when you level up before hitting the level cap.

And yes, tool tip damage claims are almost entirely worthless in many, many instances. They usually don’t reflect damage you will actually do, only some calculation based on your relevant numbers and your effective level. It’d be kinda neat to see your t-tip damage numbers modify on the fly depending on what target you have selected so you could actually see “real” damage predictions rather than functionally useless numbers that may or may not bear out.

But for now, I completely ignore them except when I change stats around so I can get a feel for the changes.
