Pets names not saving
Anytime you ‘change out’ a pet, the name resets. So, if you don’t keep that pet equipped, it’s name won’t save.
Yeah, I have started playing a ranger recently and I noted that issue when I first charmed a new pet, exactly as OP described.
It’s not a bug, just working as intended. You could make a suggestion thread over in the Ranger sub-forum, if you so desire.
Good luck.

It’s been brought up countless times. I’m sure they’ll get around to it the same time they fix all the other problems with pets. I mean it’s only been two years, you guys need to be patient.

This is what I got from another thread.
thread on ranger pet names resetting

MokahTGS.7850:
This is actually not a bug, it is working as intended. It is not optimal, but to save the names of all of your pets (read: all of everyone’s pets) would require another large name database that ANet did not create. Currently the pet name feature saves the name in the slot, not the pet, so changing out the pet type resets the slot name.
Perhaps someday they will change this, but it is not a bug.

This is pretty much exactly what’s going on.
Tl;dr: we may change this some day, but it’s not going to happen in the near future, and it’s not a bug.

Funny enough i have 1 pet that does not lose its name no matter how many times i change slots. It may be a bug but it wont get fixed anyway yey.

Don’t argue with idiots, they pull you down their level and own you with experience.
If you have the same pet with the same name in PvE and PvP then it will remember the name if you switch it out, at least it does for me.
For example, I have a bear named Howe in PvP. When I’m in PvE I normally use the fern hound and drake but if I switch to the bear it will be named Howe.

Yes, when switching slots the pet name remains linked to that pet, but when charming a new pet it gets the name of your old pet and the old gets the name reseted.
One thing I’ve noticed is that names set on amphibious pets apply to both the land and aquatic slot.
So you could say, name a jaguar on land and keep in an aquatic slot to reserve the name as you switch out the two land slots freely. As long as it’s in one of the slots, you can freely change out the other.

Huh, didn’t know that. It would make sense though as it would be a similar mechanic to the amphibious pet thing.
For the toast!
