A warning for those that own accounts with the maximum number of character slots:
Even though the bonus character slots that you can get from the HoT and Pof expansions can increase your account’s character limit past the 69 slots, the new PoF prep pack in the gemstore cannot.
Even though it says you’re eligible to purchase up to a quantity of two you will not get the bundled additional slot.
I have a ticket open with support for a refund, but the devs might like to know this and change the offering in the store so others don’t get stung.
You are correct.. I bought 2 thinking I would be able to get more and I got everything except the the character slots. Disheartening really. Waiting for Anet to get back with me. But I have a feeling they are going to refund my gems instead.

I recently had an exchange with support about the character slot issues. They say they are unable to do anything due to the fact that they do not have the tools to work around the limit, and that the devs are the ones that would have to deal with this issue.
As such, the best we can do is request a refund for the gems. Still waiting for a response on that though.
On a side note, I think it’s high time to remove the character slot limits.

About a year or so ago there was a character slot combined with something else in store. I thought I would be able to get it. So bought it. No luck. I had a back and forth with Anet devs doing a ton of things to make it work but they ended up being unsuccessful. At one point they asked if they could log on my account and try to add it that way. I was more than happy for them to try. They tried adding it on their end and by logging on my account and attempting to add it. Just wouldn’t take. They did refund my gems.
I thought with the new xpac they would raise the limit by more than 1 so bought them yesterday. Seems things are the same. I left items in mail expecting them to refund my gems and take those back. The other items are nice and all, but I was really only wanting the new character slots. Wanted to add more people to my family. lol
Wanted to say. I do believe Anet did all they could to make it work. I think there was about a week of email exchanges with several emails back and forth a day trying to make it work. They were very pleasant in trying to resolve the issue. Some of their responses implied their own frustrations with not getting it to work. It appeared it went all the way up the ladder so to speak with a bunch of different people trying. No complaints here about support. I think they went above and beyond. Just wasn’t in the stars.

Took me a bit to go through the emails. It was year and 5 months ago. After rereading them. It went to the support then senior support they worked on it for about 5 days. I can say 5 days because I have no less than 2 emails a day from Monday through Friday. With one day having 5 emails from them trying to work it out. On that Friday they told me they would have to wait to contact a dev on the following Monday because they had all went home for the weekend. The following Monday I was contacted by senior support again they told me after talking with a dev, (prefer not say any names because I know there are weird rules about using specific names.) That developer told them they could not add more without making changes to the game. So in short, I only had contact with support but they did consult a developer about the problem.
They refunded my gems but even after that they kept trying. They even tried to add a character for free. Which imo was very generous of them. Shows twice in emails they thought they were able to, yet when I logged in it wasn’t there. It just wouldn’t let them. Maybe things have changed since then and they may be able to now. crossing my fingers.

Agree, they need to allow us to have at least 90 so we can have one of every class/profession and sex. Right now we have to have at least 2 accounts for that. But even then it makes a main account feel so incomplete. Ok, 91 cause I want to keep my rerollable weekly key runner. But I dream.

The limits aren’t “artificial” — they are due to programming choices made long ago. They might seem arbitrary to us (and the specific number probably is), but that doesn’t mean it’s as easy as changing “70” to “80”. (Similarly, the reason for inconsistencies is also likely due to some of the existing code.)

You are 100% wrong in saying that it isn’t. The choice to implement the limit is in the programming, and therefore artificial by nature.

Sigh. You’re still missing the point by focusing on a narrow part of the definition (in the context of cooking, gardening, and yes, programming, the word has another context).
If the number was something they stuck in just to have a number, then sure, they could change it any time they like. But if it’s there because it provides useful limits on the size & shape of their data structures, then they can’t simply change it into something else. In that sense, it’s not an artifice.
Call it artificial if you want; it doesn’t affect the fact that they cannot just replace it with a bigger number.

You’re also basing your comments dripping in assumptions. You have nothing but a LOT of conjecture about their database structures or reasons for having a limit. Unless you have some specific insider information on what and why they are doing this, I’m going to stop you right there.
It’s a fact that they increased the maximum slots from 64 to 69. It’s a fact that this limit increased during (and after) that period if you bought the expansions. This evidence proves that the intended current limitations can go higher under the current structure. Period.
