Ranger Warhorn #5 (Call of the Wild) forces combat?
it’s happened to me since day 1. annoying, but something I’ve learned to live with.
I originally thought that, but Call of the Wild does not force combat, but if you use it with a mob selected it will alert your pet to go and attack it, thus forcing combat; if you keep your pet on passive or don’t use it with a target selected, it shouldn’t activate combat!

No, I originally thought it was my pet’s fault (Looks like I owe Sarah Jane an apology) but it was definitely auto-attacking that did it. It’s made the warhorn speed buff all but useless in jumping puzzles with mobs, since I end up stuck in combat after sending the baddies into “invulnerable” after chucking axes at the wall …
I’ve noticed this as well, both with autoattacking and with the pet forcing my ranger into combat.
If I have a mob targeted, using the skill will generally start me autoattacking, as well as sending the pet to attack.
If I don’t have a mob targeted, but there is a mob on the screen, within the range of tab targeting, using the skill will almost always send the pet after that mob, even if it yellow. If there is nothing in targeting range, then it will usually be fine. It will also usually not start me autoattacking, from what I’ve noticed, if I don’t already have a mob targeted. I have not, however, tested with the pet on passive, though I would assume this would prevent it.
It does get fairly annoying, especially when it happens with a yellow mob.
It forces you into combat if you are within range of any attackable creature. You can’t blame the pet. You can test this simply by turning your pet’s stance to “avoid combat” which is what I do now when using this skill. And yes I agree this is VERY annoying and needs to be fixed. After all what’s the point of using it for a speed buff if it forces you into combat which only just slows you down again? O.O
Do you have the option “auto target” enable? Have you tried disabling said option?
I think it is related to “auto-target.”
The trouble is this is not an attack at all. It’s really an additional utility, more like “rampage as one” than an actual attack. So it shouldn’t invoke or start auto-attack.
I have this ability on my ranger, and a similar swiftness buffing ability on other characters, and they all put your character in a state where they will take a swing at a nearby target if you’re not careful.
I suspect this is intentional behavior. While we all use these abilities to speed up our out-of-combat travel across the map, they are actually intended to be used in-combat (where the auto-attacking makes sense). Frankly, I’d rather it work correctly in combat and be a little finicky outside of combat than the other way around.

There was never a problem using them “in combat” and having auto-attack triggered automatically is more than “a little finicky.” It hasn’t always been this way, and if it’s intentional, it’s a pretty heavy nerf to the skill (and the rangers’ warhorns as a whole), since the combat-related buffs are pretty poor compared to the utility of the swiftness buff as a speed boost.
