Story mode disconnections -- very frustrating
That’s how it’s been since launch (if not before then). I don’t see them changing it now.
Ishould add in Queensdale for instance, you don’t start over when you disconnect if you’re doing a quest. Why would it make sense that if you’re spending i.e. 45min. on something that you have to spend an additional 45min. playing the same quest because you can’t reconnect to it? A frustrating waste of time. Heck, I am going to guess story mode quests are even longer than those heart shaped ones are at the earlier levels (0-15,15-25, if not more).
Some people might say that get a better internet connection. Well, listen, if my internet connection even were better and disconnects didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be eager to play such a game given something so backwards as this existing in it — I mean, wouldn’t it make sense that connection/disconnection issues are among the first things fixed in an online game?!
(You mean personal story, right? Story mode refers to dungeons, but you said you’re new, so I assume it’s the former?)
That’s because the story instance is created for you, specifically, and if you dc, the game thinks the instance isn’t needed anymore.
I don’t think it should be saved indefinitely, but for a minute or two would be nice, just to give you a chance to get back into the game after a crash or dc.
Besides, the problem isn’t so much that the instance closes when you dc, it’s the fact that there are some problems lately with lags and dcs, which in most cases are not server side. If I have to replay an instance once or twice because well, crap happens, I can deal with it, but if it happens a lot because the internet as a whole has a giant hiccup, I understand it can be very frustrating. Though this is hardly Anet’s fault.
Edit: Okay, now I’m confused. What do you mean when you say “quest”, that you play for 45 minutes? Heart quests? But the progress there always gets saved, you don’t have to do it all over again when you dc or log off. Dynamic events? There aren’t many (I think it’s about two – Tequatl and Wurm) that require you to stick around for 45 minutes and deny you a reward when you dc. What are these “quests” as opposed to the “story modes” you’re referring to?
Never mind, I read your posts again. Though it sounds a little confusing the way you put it.

You don’t lose progress in Queensdale because it’s not a private instance made just for your character. It’s a persistent map. Story missions are private, temporary instances made for your character. If you can’t handle the way the game is designed, you’re more than welcome to not play, obviously; that’s completely your right to do so. But they’re not going to change how the game was made years ago for one person.

Hmm perhaps this is one of those GW1 features that might return someday.
On the other hand most story steps are very short …
All I want to ask is that if you disconnect during a personal story quest that you are able to reconnect without starting the entire personal story quest over. This would benefit Guild Wars 2 players should any experience such a problem.

same problem here, I just cant finish my personal story, because it disconnected me 3 times and graphic card crashed one time. bad thing is its not short story but the longer one. this is just ridiculous I can’t reconnect to my instance…
