If you start the instance but bring a friend, the friend cannot attack during phase 1 and part of phase 2 for the simulated battles.

Just completed the game with a guildie who was struggling on her own, had no problem joining her party and she was able to fight from the get go – so was I.

Your problem may be something else like lag on connection – they were advertising the second build of the day when I signed out – so maybe there was some problem and they identified to fix.

Good luck anyways, I soloed my own instance so can only report on my friends.
