Tarnished Coast
"Target nearest" no longer confined
Tarnished Coast
Another problem that’s new as of the patch is that destructible items seem to be prioritized over actual foes, even if they’re actively attacking you. I was out beating on centaurs, as one does, and every time I hit C I’d suddenly be attacking “Centaur target dummy”.
It also likes to target enemies that are out of range on the Z axis, particularly if they’re not targeting me or aren’t even aggro.
The “Target Nearest” functionality is completely broken right now.
Welcome to the club! :P Targeting has been broken for long, nothing new with latest Feature Patch.

It wasn’t exactly steller before the patch. I haven’t actually noticed much change so far, but it certainly doesn’t need to be any worse.
I agree that “target nearest” and “auto-target” are a lot less useful since the patch:
- as the OP says, too often you target something outside your field of view, instead of something just in front.
- as Verteiron says, “furniture” is prioritized — I don’t want to destroy centaur supplies when fighting off the harathi counter-offensive at King’s Gate; I want to fight the centaurs.
- I also found that, despite the patch notes, it was also harder to keep locked on the Karka Queen. Not sure about furniture-like world bosses; perhaps that is easier.
It definitely has been wonky since the patch. After playing the game for so long, I have expectations of what enemy I’m going to attack after hitting my closest enemy key and a skill, without waiting to see if that is the actual enemy that gets targeted. Since the patch in events with a lot of mobs, that often isn’t the one I would have expected.
I know they changed the priority for world bosses and such, but I’m having targeting issues in events with nothing but trash mobs and environmental objects.
same problem for me, really annoying :-/
edit: especially in wvwvw where walls got a surprisingly high priority to be the target of choice… i can’t even damage a wall without sieges!
I’ve experienced the same “problem” since the patch, It’s very frustrating as a Ranger using a bow. When attacking a group of Centaurs with others, the first goes down & I usually press “c” & a Skill using the mouse to attack the next one. After the patch, Because I’m further away from the battle, I Now find myself shooting behind me & agro’ing a wild boar or shooting at the side of a mountain, because there’s something on the other side that’s technically closer, but not even in my line of sight.
just a short update that this problem still exists for me (and i guess for some other ppl as well)……..
It’s bad enough that our “nearest enemy” (as it is called in the Control Options) has always included non-enemies (yellow targets, specifically designated as neutral). It should only be targeting red objects, because those are “enemies”. But aside from targeting non-enemies, and regularly targeting things outside my field of view, it also does not seem to care about proximity. I have had instances where it selects targets that are out of range before targets within aggro distance.
Targeting is arguably the most important thing in a game revolving around combat. This needs to be addressed before Guild Halls, the NPE, or anything else currently considered to be a high focus area. This is of much higher importance. And it is totally messed up since 9/9.
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

+1 Hamfast. Yellow targets/non enemies should NEVER be targeted unless the player chooses to. I love it in Grimworm pits when the vet spider infront of the chest spawns and the system targets the massive egg sac on the level below. (and there are so many other other examples).
It really needs an overhaul.
I thought this problem was solved quite a while back, but it does indeed feel like somone forgot to commit those changes to the branch being developed for the Chinese version. this, and many other functionality changes.
After the recent patch was applied I noticed the target closest behavior was different right away. At first I thought it was actually targeting the closest foe regardless of whether I was looking that direction or not. I thought that might be kind of useful. Better to target the foe immediately behind me as opposed to the one I can see that is far away I thought. But then I started finding myself targeting objects and neutral creatures like the folks above were reporting and I realized the target closest feature had actually been broken (even more than it had been). Not good.

I couldn’t have said it better. Yes, targeting (the game’s biggest Achilles heel imo) is now even worse. Heck, even general tab targeting cannot be counted on to select the enemy player in wvw first when pressed. Too often I find myself yelling, “Kitten!!!! How about targeting the HUMAN PLAYER 3 feet in front of me!!!” /facepalm.
Sadly, Anet seems hell bent on destroying their product with this hideous failing.
It’s always fun to target the enemy outside of the current battle instead of the three standing in front of you that are currently hitting you. Then as ranger you shoot your penetrating arrow and aggro that new enemy and it’s friends. Oh the joy.
A devs response would be most appropriate.

Oh yeah .. can’t count how often i pulled some Moas in Claw of Jormag fight that were
also nearly out of my view.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Yeah this is broken.Try running CM with a Thief. Kill the Catpurse then go to tele to the Rifleman that’s wrecking the Ele. Whoops. Just jumped into another room and aggroed three more guys.
Plz fix targeting again.
