"The Steel Tide" lvl 80 quest bug *spoilers?*
I am in the exact same boat. While I don’t really mind about the content of the quests (that’s not what this section is about) I would at least like to be able to complete them!
I am also having the same issue. At this point it guess we are done until they fix it.
I am having the the exact same issue as you and agree with you on every other point. The quest is tedious, long, and just not fun. The early game content felt worlds better and was far more rewarding. I believe the addition of apatia to our questlines was a bug as well. This is just speculation, but it could be the cause of our The Steel Tide bug. Even if the quest functioned correctly I would still say it needed more than a little work.
Also experiencing the same issue. Guess I’ll work on other characters while waiting for a fix for this.
me too i did experiencing bug on the last Archmage Harshaf the dog just pull it making it invulnerable to attack
Same thing happened to me, the Archmage died but everyone was alive and I was unable to speak to Crusader Deborah to progress the story.
I’m also having this problem
Guardian of Crystal Desert
I am haveing same problem restarted quest 4 times still the same
Spectre
I’m stuck aswell, and yes, the questline is boring as hell.
Only upside, i looted a rare greatsword while killin’ bad guys.
Also stuck on this quest, I’m sure the developers will get onto it as soon as they can. Just submit a bug report and wait, plenty of other stuff to do I guess. =/
I am stuck too…. has anyone who is stuck every beat it by replaying it over and over?
I’m stuck also.. I even waited for 10 min see if it update, but nothing. I’m going to submit a report also.
Same problem as Darth where “the Archmage died but everyone was alive and I was unable to speak to Crusader Deborah to progress the story.” This was on my third attempt, the first two times the Archmage was stuck invulnerable after the cutscene with the Archmage attacking Crusader Deborah, it seemed incomplete, like the guy with the dog did not appear in the cutscene at all until the third attempt. Also agree this quest was not fun and I do not want to do it a fourth time….
Also if anyone figures out a workaround could they please post it here?
Patched today, still not working.
yep, still not working, stuck not being able to talk to crusader deborah
I got this as well.
I guess “When it’s ready” didn’t apply to personal stories

In another thread someone said not to attack the boss in his second phase at all. That didn’t work at all. Not one bit.
I have done this four times. Twice normally, hoping it would fix itself.
Once not attacking the boss in his second phase, still broken.
Once not attacking him at all, and letting the NPCs mop him up.
Nothing worked. This is beyond frustrating. I want two hours of my life back.
Just happened to me. Drama was already completely killed by awkward pauses with the camera panning in weird angles for no reason while I wait to regain control of my character. To have do it over again because I can not complete a bugged out talk to NPC objective kind takes it to the next level.
Still has not been fixed, Crusader Deborah cannot be spoken to after the Archmage dies the second time -.-
Same issue as well. Going to have to wait for GMs to resolve it.
same issue here. loving the game breaking bugs.
Just happened to me as well. Should i try and replay the mission or just wait it out for it to be fixed?

Thanks for the reports, everyone. We think we’ve identified what’s causing the issue and will hopefully have a fix soon.

Same. Did all that work just to have it glitch out as I’m ready to complete the mission.
Having this problem as well, would be nice to have this fixed asap.
I have done the same mission 4 times and yet Deborah stands there, doing nothing! Been waiting for days to get it done, so I hope they’ll fix it soon!
Made it work, I play as a ranger and I my pet on put it on defensive since I noticed that in the cut-scene it was attacking the mob, not sure if that is what did it though.

Hopefully the devs will reply to this once the issue has actually been fixed.
Same problem. Not ArenaNet’s finest moment.
I have the same problem
Same issue here and I agree with OP. The events prior to meeting Archmage Harshaf was very tedious. There isn’t much skill in sitting in a tank spamming the same buttons for 10 minutes. The early personal story was fun but the longer it progressed the more tedious the objectives was. It’s almost like the writers at ArenaNet got bored and/or stressed for time and just threw something in there to be done with it.
There is no way I’m redoing this until I know its fixed. Sitting in that tank for another 10 min? No thank you.
Other then that, I love the game. ;)
Same bug just happened where the guy doesn’t die at the end. I only knew he was supposed to because of this page. I assumed we were supposed to save him, so I rushed in to kill the champion thing.
On a little side not. The cut scene was pretty awful. I am not usually one to speak out, but this just confused me really bad. How is it that the NPCs and I are fighting this champion, then a cut scene happens where the champion runs off after one person, all the while, I am just standing there letting it happen. There should have been no cut scene at all. It broke all sense of reality. Only one guy came to help the girl out. Did my whole team just stand there eating some omnonberries??? If the guy is supposed to die, then have him die in the cut scene. Or, just let me save him like I thought I was supposed to. The text in the cut scene didn’t even match up with the voices, and the last part of it, there was no audio.
I understand trying to push a story with cut scenes. A lot of them are pretty decent. But there are others that there is just no emotion in the voices.
Hit by this bug as well
First run of this instance, I tried to save him and succeeded. Googled the issue when the npc wouldn’t speak to me afterwards, and tried again.
Second run, I didn’t fight the boss in the entire second phase. Just let the npcs do it, hoping he’d give the guy enough damage to kill him. Unfortunately the npcs did enough damage to kill the boss entirely by themselves, while beriene didn’t go below 2/3 health :/ How exactly is he supposed to die against such a weak boss ><
I see a dev posted 2 days back about a possible fix. Hopefully that comes in soon, I’ve been really enjoying the personal storyline up until this point
Tried to run this today and couldn’t even get into the tank… If I knew this I would have chosen another story path.
I managed to complete it just now, i didnt touch the boss untill after the ‘hes too powerfull’ cutscene. After that i killd him and managed to talk with Debrah.
I confirm what purged and Exigo said. Don’t attack the archmage at the beginning will (I don’t know why) not trigger the dog’s related bug. I did it that way just once, and It worked well. Sam Beirne did die hopefully and I was able to talk to Deborah in order to finish the quest.
So far there’s no fix for that quest, I also checked today’s game update, and “The Steel Tide” isn’t included in the story fixes.
I advise you all to try this until Arenanet devs fix it.
Purged, Exigo, Tirithas confirmed.
I completed this mission by holding back and not attacking Archmage Harshaf (you will have to engage the boss without attacking) until the “too Powerfull” cut scene.
In doing so, the cut scene seemed to happen correctly thus allowing the story to progress.
If it has progressed properly, Debrah will be crouching over Sam Beirne and you will be able to talk to her.
Thanks for the work around guys!

Worked for me. Thanks
After seeing how many people this ‘fix’ was working for, I thought I’d give it a go, and went through the instance for the 3rd time.
In the final fight, I stay entirely out of range, and did not hit the boss once, as directed.
Not one of the npcs went below 3/4 health, they did massive damage to the boss each, while he apparently did squat
The saving grace for me, was when the boss did an aoe fear shortly before he died in his 2nd incarnation. Briene was on full health, but being feared far enough away from the rest of the npcs, triggered teh next part of the quest.
After the boss was did, Deborah came and cried next to briene, so upset he was dead, all the while he stood patiently next to her, talking about his dog ally >< See attachment.
Anyways. The quest moved forward, so at least I can move on from this instance, albeit in a strange way. Pity there’s so many bugs associated with it.
For the entire fight, it seems the script goes smoothly w/o any of your assistance. I just stood there the entire time and the grp of npc’s killed off the mob, and executed the cut scenes, etc just fine. 3rd times a charm.
My wife and I just ran into this same issue. Still not fixed.
Still not fixed, just ran into this.
Not bugged now, I just stood and watched as the NPC’s killed the Archmage as Zii suggested.
Still not fixed, ran into this today.
this is insanely frustrating.
after sitting in those tanks for an hour or something until 6 giants died (how am i supposed to know that ?!) the mage gets invulnerable for no reason again.
same problem here, 2nd phase and the archmage is invulnerable after the cutscene. having to go through the whole tedious chain again just to have the same problem is a bit of a joke. anybody have an eta on a fix?
Still bugged for me now, worked second time when I did the “just sit idle and let the NPCs kill it”.
