Toypocalypse party bug
Answer is simple : you can’t play Toypocalypse with a party and it’s intended.
Always been like this since Toypocalypse introduction in Wintersday 2012
Oh That’s rubbish

lol no it hasn’t. Toypocalypse allowed parties in 2013, then anet went and screwed it up in 2014 and when we complained said they would look at it for 2015 but never did.
I thought I remembered playing it with a friend before, but figured I was misremembering. All I know is that as it currently stands where party members are not joined in together, it isn’t really that enjoyable and far more difficult to get a group that actually stays for the entire instance.

After the 2013 Toypocalypse there were changes to the game that broke the underlying functionality for Toypocalypse. For 2014 the team was trying to fix the bug (and really, they went up past the absolute last second to try and fix it) but ultimately had to decide between the activity working or being cut – it was that unplayable. It wasn’t a lightly made decision, especially since it had worked the year before and players liked it.
The team would still like to fix it but it isn’t a simple switch or anything. Reverting the change would break significant other parts of the game.
Soo…. I would rather queue with friends too, but I’d also like to be able to do the activity. It’s a rough tossup.
So, you’ve had a year to fix it and didn’t.
Sorry if this is repeating in another thread, couldn’t find one.
Basically when a friend and myself try to enter toypocalypse together, even though we are in a party, we get put in separate instances with strangers. We wanted to do this together, possibly 2-man should we feel like a challenge, but we can’t even get in the same instance :/ No matter which one of us enters first, the other doesn’t get asked to enter as well, and if we enter separately, we get put in separate instances. Not fun!
That’s odd. I did this instance last night in a party with my husband, just the two of us. No issues at all.
*edit- Ahh, nope, just YouTubed this, we did the other one with the doll and the presents, etc. We haven’t tried this one yet.

If it can’t be fixed to be an actual group activity (or they simply dont want to dedicate more resources to fixing it), I would rather they scrap it next year and give us something new we can do in a party.
I think most people only do it now for the achievements, which should never be the primary motivator for players – it just isn’t fun without the ability to go in with friends.
Thing is, as it currently is, I and others won’t bother with it. Sure, others can enjoy it, and if they like it as is, great. I just personally don’t like it as an activity and want to play it with friends. Less I can do that, the less I will play, and on this activity not at all, just how it is for many.

You did, in 2013. 2012 was random, and as Lauren states, 2014+ it’s an Activity which all count as pvp because the code was changed and leaving it as such broke it. This was apparently the easier way to go, and they’ve had other priorities.
edit: specifically at the time, it was stated the game was unstable with party functionality and had to be done this way.
also, there have been a lot of threads about party and toypocalypse. Google is the way to search the forums, as silly as that sounds.

Not really a solution but at least a partial workaround. Basically turn on Game Messages → Player vs Player in any of your chat tabs and then click the message that pops up(should be in red) when one of your friends enter Toypocalypse(it will also popup for some other PvP matches so make sure it is Toypocalypse first) to join in.
Oh, cool! Thanks for the work-around tip! =)
Thank you so much, Khisanth! I’ll finally be able to play with my friends.
Obviously I don’t know how the underlying systems are and such then it’s just a guessing but, like a programmer myself, it feels like tying activities with others game modes like PvP was a dumb move (no offense intended). I know decisions like that are made in order to recycle resources and such but here is a clear example why sometimes it’s not a good idea: you change a thing for a mode and then break another. It’s like sleeping with a short blanket, you cover your head and your feet get uncovered. I apologize if the thing is more complex than that, there must be reasons for it has been done.
Well, I just hope a way to fix this will be found, but I wouldn’t hold my breath to it being fixed for the next Wintersday :/

I wouldn’t count on it, based on the red response we got in this thread it is clear that they don’t care about this being broken. They are doing everything they can to make this game unplayable with friends. They’ve had over 2 years to fix this now and they didn’t even put any effort into it. It would have been better off not being included than being included as the mess it is now.

I’m not going to count on it either and that’s even ironic, a game that was advertised to focus on community and group play losing more and more that ability… oh well…
Also I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I don’t buy that it can’t use a party because it is tied to PvP excuse one bit. I can queue for pvp with my party. Parties work in PvP, this is a cop-out and we shouldn’t let them get away with it. Honesty is key, I’d much prefer a “We just don’t want to put resources into this because we feel blah, blah and blah are more important.” over what sounds like something a PR person came up with that means nothing.
