So just now, I attempted to unlock an exotic rifle skin. Got the actual rifle from pvp loot. Right clicked. Selected “UNLOCK SKIN”. Got the usual “this weapon will be account bound, are you sure?” blah blah. No weird errors or anything.
I go to my wardrobe to find it, and I don’t see it anywhere. I should definitely have the skin 100% already.
My mistake was instead of hanging on to it I salvaged it instead (didn’t want the rifle itself because of stats, just wanted skin) and it’s still not there. Rebooted the game, and double checked. Nothing.
I didn’t think to write the name down because obviously this doesn’t happen normally. Can anything be done?
From the filter on the upper right, choose ‘rifle’

Unlock another rifle skin
Repeat and take another screenshot.
As you’ve described your symptoms, you should see two identical screenshots. If the unlock is going through, you would see one new skin in the wardrobe.

I was wondering if the character that salvaged the Rifle could equip Rifles. Because, if not, it would not show up in Hero Wardrobe, but only in Bank Wardrobe.
Okay, well just an update for anyone who may of seen this. Was busy yesterday so I didn’t have time to test.
So just now I tested this and went and bought a random weapon from TP (just a random exotic hammer if you need to know).
I made sure it was something I didn’t have unlocked yet. Went to the bank, found it in the wardrobe storage and everything. Not unlocked yet.
Unlocked the skin, went to the normal wardrobe to equip it and sure enough it works now. The skin is unlocked. I have no idea why it didn’t work yesterday.
I’m still super mad because at the time when it DIDN’T work I really wanted that rifle skin. Lol. Now it’s just lost forever I guess. Will post again if I run into this issue.

Did you check the bank’s wardrobe for the skin? Which skin was it?
That’s what I’m kicking myself slightly for. Since the rifle itself I really didn’t want anyways (just wanted skin). I went ahead and salvaged it without thinking to write down the name or something. All I remember it was a decent looking exotic rifle.

I realize that you’re frustrated because you can’t find the skin you wanted to use in the first place. And now you’ve spent a lot of time investigating, without being able to lay your hands on that skin. That can’t be fun.
All the same: I encourage you to go through the wardrobe to see if you can identify the skin you wanted.

I guess what I’m suggesting is that it probably did unlock — the wardrobe has been around for several years now and it’s been very reliable for millions of players and even more millions of unlocks. It would be a stretch to imagine that you ran into the one situation in which salvaging a weapon didn’t unlock its skin, but that no one else has ever encountered that situation.
(People do run into issues with minis and occasionally collections, because the unlock system works differently.)
tl;dr I’m confident you unlocked a skin, if you salvaged the weapon. You just have to find it now.

An easier way might be to equip a rifle on one of your characters, and then use the Hero panel Wardrobe.
A lot less rifles to go through. Also, look at spearguns/harpoon guns. Sometimes, they look just like rifles.
You could also try a -repair of the client, just in case of corrupted file(s). Instructions found in the Knowledge Base accessed via the ‘Support’ link above/below and ‘Search – Repair’.
The harpoon gun scenario seems a lot more likely …
Same issue with staff and trident and occasionally scepter due to the icons.
Edit: After checking my wardrobe I remember I ran into something similarish when I got Flamebelcher. It looks like a rifle and the name is not something you would expect on a harpoon gun.
An easier way might be to equip a rifle on one of your characters, and then use the Hero panel Wardrobe.
A lot less rifles to go through. Also, look at spearguns/harpoon guns. Sometimes, they look just like rifles.

IC is right: I wouldn’t feel bad at all. We’ve all done the same (or worse!) — the naming convention on skins & weapons can be … let’s call it confusing. I’m glad it got resolved, even if you didn’t end up unlocking a cool rifle skin like you thought.

I remember I was crafting the Ad Infnitum, went all the way of making that weird sub-backpack. So when I was done I salvaged it for the ectos.
Then came tier 2. And I had to craft it all over again because that item was used in upgraded forms every tier. I don’t think I’ve stopped facepalming myself for the rest of the day.

Glad you found it, I am always worried about bugs that make unlocks vanish from account after noticing a random dye (4s value one) missing from my collection one day. So far I did not encounter such a bug again.
