Unuseable training manual?
Can you allocate any trait points? If yes, then you apparently have already used the manual. Perhaps a previous item or perhaps this one counted, but you were lucky that it didn’t disappear after its use. Either way, save it for another character.
If you cannot allocate trait points, then I recommend that you contact support — they are the only ones who will be able to help you resolve this for your account. (Reports here could help the developers address the issue so it doesn’t happen again, but without information on how to replicate the bug, that might be a long time coming.)
Ohh so the manuals only let you move trait points around and unlock the early abilities? I was under the impression that they actually gave you trait points. Ok, looks like I bought one before taking my month-ish long game hiatus and forgot about it then.
The only way you get trait points is by leveling up, the manuals are there so you can re-invest old trait points somewhere else. This is good in case you wanna try and play a different build, or in case you might have made a wrong choice when allocating traits.
I know this post is old, but I just started playing and this makes no sense. I got trait points before I even knew what an adept training manual is. I bought one and tried to use it and nothing happens. It doesn’t make sense that it would be for respecs because there is a dialogue option for that when you talk to your trainer.
Can someone please explain this to me? What are the training manuals for??? It boggles my mind that there isn’t more information on this…
7 months ? you could’ve created a new thread for this.
To sum traitpoints up:
You unlock traitlines with manuals. The levels are “Adept”, “Master” and “Grandmaster”; so you need to unlock thrice and coincidently the manual NPC sells you three different manuals.
- You can unlock (consume the manuals) Adept as lvl11, Master at lvl40 and Grandmaster at lvl60. If you only unlocked Adept, you can’t put more than 10 points into any trait line. If you haven’t unlocked any, you can’t spend your trait points at all.
- You get 1 traitpoint each level starting from lvl11. There are no other means to get trait points.
- You reset your spent points (keyword “re-allocate”) at the manual npc. Not asking for a manual, but directly for a reset. The costs depends on your level, but is pretty cheap (<4s)

So weird. I got started getting trait points at level 11 without even knowing what a training manual was. never bought one, never used one. I then purchased one under the false impression that I’d unlock 10 more trait points. Obviously that didn’t work, but it doesn’t explain why the manual isn’t used. It still sits in my inventory. I’ve machine gun clicked it about a million times lol. Oh well, maybe a new patch changed the system or something? I’m very new so I wouldn’t know. Thanks for your reply!
All of the pop-ups explain exactly what trait points and manuals are. If one reads the informational pop-ups, one will not become confused or ill-informed.
When a player gains their first trait point it tells them exactly what it is, how they are acquired, and that the player must visit the appropriate trainer for their class to purchase a manual “to unlock each tier” at the appropriate level to allocate these earned points.
If your manual is unable to be consumed, and you are currently level 11 or higher, then you probably purchased two Adept Manuals and already unlocked your Adept Trait Tier with the first manual. The second manual will not get consumed if you already unlocked that Trait Tier and currently have zero trait points allocated.
You can either save the second manual for another character for when they need it, sell it on the Trading Post, use it as a much more expensive trait reset tool instead of resetting your traits at your trainer for less than 4 silver, or delete it.
