My guess is that Anet won’t give you the guy’s name because of security reasons- because of the circumstance, the kind of conversation that might happen probably won’t be a pleasant one. If you contacted the receiver and he says that he won’t send your money back, it’s a conversation on the road to disaster.

As for why it happened, it might be down to your friend and the receiver having similar account or character names. I’ve also noticed when sending mails to my boyfriend, that even if I start typing his character/account name it might auto-fill a different account name (often it’s somebody who’s in the area or in your guild).

That all being said, I’m not sure how you sent the mail to somebody from outside your friends list by right-clicking somebody from on your friends list… it doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that would happen. I hate to suggest such a thing (just playing devil’s advocate), but are you sure your friends are being truthful? Maybe ask all your other friends to clear their mail boxes and see if anything appears from you?

Unfortunately, the guy who received your money is under no obligation to return it (as far as I’m aware). If Anet started policing gold/item trades between players, they’d also end up allowing players to bypass the Black Lion Trading Centre for trading safely.

On a slightly more positive note, there’s a chance that the guy you sent it to hasn’t been online yet to return it to you.

Good luck!

If CS gave out that kind of information to you, where would the line be drawn for others wanting similar information for other purposes. The policy is, and rightly so, to keep everyone’s personal account information secure. I’m sure you wouldn’t want them giving out information about your account.

I’m afraid you will have to wait for someone to return the money, and if no one does, then cut your losses.

Good luck.

The problem is giving out any kind of game account information. If they give it to you, for your purpose, others will ask for game account information for other purposes. Then, it becomes an issue. Who do they give game account information to, and who do they not? It is best policy to never start down that road.

Regardless, it matters not what you or I think. Their policy is to keep such information out of the hands of the public. /shrug

I had something similar happen. A guildie was gifting ectos to people, and he sent a mail to me, but I never got it. I wasn’t too concerned with it, but neither was he, and we didn’t think twice about it afterwards.
