Q:
unable to direct character
I don’t want to assume your level of experience with playing the game so I’ll ask this for starters.
Are you using your left mouse button or your right mouse button to move your camera and orient your character to the direction you are running in?
Holding the left mouse button and turning only rotates your viewpoint without orienting your character (helps with wanting to look at the scenery while running around without running in the direction you are looking with the camera).
The right mouse button changes the orientation of your character with the camera and is used to navigate the world in combination with your movement keys.
It sounds as if you are trying to direct your character by using the left mouse button instead of the right mouse button.
Does this help you or is your issue much different and not a key/button functionality misunderstanding?

You’ll definitely have to provide more details, a specific example, or a video demonstration for this to be clarified.
I have had an issue before where a certain movement input from my keyboard will get “stuck”. For instance, sometime my character may repeatedly run forward even though I am not commanding them to do so. I can fix this by tapping the W key, which allows the input to re-register, and then it recognizes that I am no longer moving forward, so my character will stop.
Otherwise, it could very well be the issue with the left mouse button that the previous poster described. I believe there is a “free camera” option that you can toggle off so that it will cause the left mouse button rotations to function like the right mouse button rotations. You can try playing around with those to see if they fix your issue as well.
Thank you very much for your replies (and yes I am a newbie at this game) it was the left and right buttons on the mouse that was the problem. Extremely embarrassed about it, but very appreciative for the help.

We were all new to the game at some point, do not be embarrassed. It’s hard to learn without asking a few questions and it always takes a little time to get used to something new. If you have any more questions or concerns over something you think is a bug or anything you may find yourself needing help with in the future do not hesitate to ask!
Safe adventures.
:)
