The filter should really be more context dependent… there is a tremendous amount of letter combinations that may be offensive by themselves but can be found in perfectly normal words too.

Off the top of my head:
a/s/s/a/s/s/i/n
p/a/k/i/s/t/a/n
c/o/c/k/t/a/i/l

If the filter can’t differentiate those words from the offensive ones then it doesn’t really help anything and instead stands in the way of regular polite conversation.

man, NOW I know why I keep seeing the word “kitten” in posts. drove me absolutely bonkers trying to figure out what word you young folks were saying “kitten” in place of.

I’ve played Dwarf Fortress, where kittens are an FPS-killing menace, so I’m used to blocking out reports of kitten-cruelty.

From today’s patch notes.

Fixed a bug that caused many piercing, boomerang, and bouncing projectiles (those that hit more than 1 target) to continually increase in damage the mokittengets they hit.

Remove the k and it should become obvious.

I think the problem is that the filter is trying to catch people who are intentionally bypassing it. For example, it ignores spaces because some people type like t h i s in order to swear despite it, so my thread gets hit as a false positive. Thing is every word a word filter is suppressing is a word that is clearly not allowed on the forum, even if the forum rules say nothing. However the rules here do mention the filter:

Do not circumvent the word filter. The Support Forum, like the game, is filtered for appropriate language. Any attempt to circumvent this filter will not be tolerated including the use of “creative spelling” or of forum names or signatures that contain a word that is censored by the prohibited words filter.

Typing the filtered word might be an accident bought on by anger, frustration, etc. Mispelling the word shows the poster intentionally breaking forum rules. So the correct response to such posters isn’t to try and have the filter catch them, at the expense of getting legitimate posts caught by mistake. No, the correct response is to have the moderators come down on these people like they would come down on anyone else intentionally breaking the rules.

The word “f-u-r-t-h-e-r-m-o-r-e” appears to be sending a false positive to the swear word filter. Apparently it is trying to filter out the combination of letters “f-u”, which is understandable but breaks a segment of the English language.

Hey Mark, apparently the word kitten is not censored, and probably should be. (Pardon the curse, but it had to be said to show that it doesn’t filter!)

Hmm annoying, but if it helps you can always use something like http://bitly.com/ to create a shortened URL (always better actually than the whole link) and to bypass the kitten filter

wouldn’t it be cool if the profanity filter was smart enough to determine the difference between spaces after each L E T T E R and spaces between actual words. Besides the fact that there are O-T-H-E-R ways to putting spaces or gaps between profanity so that it can still be readable.

A profanity filter is best missing the odd occurrence and being picked up by a moderator rather than interfering with users content constantly with false positives.

There are so many random ones that I can’t even count them.

Also, I’m not too sure if this would be shortsighted, but why not giving people a forum account option to turn the filter off, or have different levels of censorship? We can turn it off in-game, would that really be such a terrible thing?

The following link leads to the censored word. Even URL link refering to it by name has been censored, turning the original URL address null and void. Please fix it, there is no need to censor a harmless animal. Your filter can do better than that in XXIth century computing.

Its best to get some scouts on your BL and get a response force ready when kitten PYRO are out. You stop them at the first keep and they might seek a softer target.

Did someone break the filter? I came here to report an issue that I see was posted here months ago; I can’t help but notice… thakitten still happens right now.

Yeah, anything ending in a t with the word "it" after it is boned now. I don’t think that’s always been the case, and what_it and that_it, etc. are common enough I suspect we’d have complained earlier. Also if I cannot post what and it normally, why can I post "what_it"?

I again humbly request that the filter be set up the opposite way -- blacklist problem words and deal with special cases if they arise rather than arbitrarily blanket blocking a plethora of letter combinations and forcing a whitelist to be made to make up for the lack of intelligence in the filter.

This time, it’s JonPeters who got censored ridiculously.
