Long Live Atlas Park 33
Every few hours while playing GW2 my entire system will lock up. One sound will keep playing, like an ambient river or something, but the whole system just hangs. Mouse is movable, sound still works, but I can’t command+tab or force quit. Control+Shift+Power doesn’t work to reboot the machine and I have to hard restart. Anyone else seeing this or know why it occurs?
This is happening to me as well. The exact same thing. I thought it was a ram issue, so I went out and doubled my ram. It happened again. So I was thinking is was a video card issue and began researching how to upgrade the video card. While its possible, it will have to be done professionally. So my guess for now, is that its a video card issue, more specifically not enough video card ram. However I would love a better answer if some one can give one, you know one that isn’t “Yeah, you have to spend around $300 to get a new video card.”
This has been happening to me since launch, and it is getting very frustrating. I could be alone in a zone, and the system locks up. Numerous times I’ve been in dungeons on critical champion battles and the the entire game locks up. I can move my mouse, but I can’t exit the screen to restart the game. I have to manually shut down my entire computer and reboot, which I have not done on any Macintosh computer I’ve owned in 6 years. Since owning this game, I have to reboot a minimum of three times a day because the game locks up. Please look into this for the MacBeta users ArenaNet. Otherwise, I will be forced to go back to World of Warcraft, which does not lock up my system even on the new MOP expansion.
Are you able to get into the task manager via CMD + ALT + ESC? Have you tried to switch workspaces via CTRL + LEFTARROW or RIGHTARROW? Just anything that would make GW2 application lose the focus. Is this also happening when playing in windowed mode?
Just a few hints to maybe work around this issue, in any case I would report this to the support team.

Please reread my original post. This is a full system freeze. I even said that I cannot command+tab, force quit, or force reboot. I have to do a hard reset by holding the power key for seven seconds.
This happens whenever GW2 is running. I don’t even have to be actively using it; it can lock up the system running in a separate workspace.

Considering I can run GW2 on my Bootcamp partition without ever seeing this problem (AND that I can run SW:TOR, Champions Online, and various other performance intensive FPS titles) I’ve ruled out this being a video card problem. This used to occur with the City of Heroes Transgaming port as well— welcome to Cider. I’ve reported this to the support team. I’m hoping it’s something to do with the GW2 code, because if this is a Cider problem, we’re never going to see it fixed, given Transgaming’s awful update record.
Well I am glad it might not be a video card issue. I am still stumped. Though I want to point out that it doesn’t happen to my husband, who has a better computer, nor his brother who also has a better computer. Both Mac. My Mac is older. Like when I started I had under the minimum required ram, doubling it brought it to that requirement. I have 256mb VRAM, and yeah, I know I am stuck on the VRAM but I don’t know where else to go and the problem is annoying although not 3 times a day annoying for me. So I should count myself lucky but I am still in the lower level stuff. No fractals and other like things.
I’m running GW2 on an iMac I purchased in 2008. I had to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then Mountain Lion to run the game, so it could be an issue with the older systems. My wife also runs a 2009 iMac and encounters the same problem. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro with 256 MB, so it must be too much for it to process at times. I have locked up another three times so far today. After my last hard restart, I logged back in, moved three steps forward, and it locked immediately. This is extremely frustrating. I also cannot run in large groups. When I do, I cannot see what we are attacking and my system is very jumpy.
I have noticed this but mine works fine in game. I actually lock up periodically when logging off to the character select screen and then quitting the game. It will just freeze the entire system. Sometimes music loops sometimes the music immediately stops. I have to just hard power down by holding the power button in. I have better luck when i decide I am done for the night to just hit Esc in game and exit the game completely from there.
Otherwise, I will be forced to go back to World of Warcraft, which does not lock up my system even on the new MOP expansion.
gods NNOOO!
It is near impossible to troubleshoot these issues without knowing your hardware.
I can guarantee that computer freezing is not caused by too-low amounts of RAM or VRAM. Chasing these as solutions will get you no where.
Use the “About This Mac” selection from the Apple menu and post your Mac model, OS version, processor, memory and graphics details when reporting a problem. Without knowing this, you’re just swinging at air hoping to get lucky in finding a solution.

Full system freezes aren’t caused by hardware, so there’s no point in listing it, to be honest. These system freezes are caused by the GW2 client according to my system logs; some exception is raised in the client that completely crashes the entire system. How this got past ArenaNet and Transgaming is beyond me. A full system crash with no option for closing the problematic program and it wasn’t caught during test? Is anyone home?
