Function Keys
I get the same problem. F1 – dim brightness F2 – Increase brightness etc
The function keys are not remapped when running the game, you have to do it yourself:
Option-F5 (Keyboard Options), check “Use F1, F2 etc. as standard function keys”, or similar, my OS language is not English and I’ve translated the line freely.
There might also be Third-Party-Software which can do this job for you.

So, are others still having this problem? I am. I do not understand the statement above. Option F5 in GW2 client? or in OSX? Either way Option F5 does nothing. I cant find the “Use F1, F2 etc. as standard function keys” checkbox.
Under System preferences in the keyboard area first tab put a check in "use all F1,F2, etc keys as standard funtion keys " that will fix it
Hmmm, well maybe it is the fact that I am using a “Hackintosh”. Under System Preferences – Keyboard, I have two tabs “Keyboard” and “Keyboard Shortcuts”. I dont see the “use all F1,F2,etc” option. Using 10.7.2 currently.
Using a Razer Black Widow Ultimate keyboard.
its there in the mac os x system prefences

Yeah, I found the System Preferences / Keyboard section. I just dont have the “use all F1,F2,etc” option.
No… thanks for posting the pic though.
The two check box items dont exist. The rest is the same. I am assuming this is for MAC keyboards as it is a native OSX preference dialog.
Assuming it either isn’t there because the system knows I dont have a native MAC keyboard, or because the that particular preference dialog was modified for the “hackintosh”
I could remap the F1-F4 keys to something else. Not that big of a deal. I am primarily playing GW2 on Windows… I just use the MAC client if I happened to be booted into OSX.
Thanks again for posting the pic.
Hm thats strange, i also have a hackintosh and i can remap the keys.
Maybe its because i have an apple keyboard?

I am guessing that is the issue.

If you have a “regular” keyboard… plug it in and see if the options change.
I used the in-game keymapping and set Control-1 through 4 for my F1 through F4 keys.
If you have a logitech keyboard make sure you get their driver. That sounds like a driver problem to me. If it isn’t then you might want to check if there is a driver solution for your keyboard on the product website if they have one.
Is there any way to unbind f1-f4 just when in game?
It’s a bit more difficult to completely automate it, but a partial solution is to use an app like Function Flip, that allows to partially change the behaviour of the F-keys. For example, I set it to only flip F1 to F4, since I don’t need those functions anyway.
It would be wise to enable function keys to work as intended (as function keys for apps, not for brightness control etc.), you can still use the brightness settings and media controls by pressing fn + F1-12. This is one of the very first things I do after setting up a new Mac, in addition to enabling secondary click of course…
