Q:

Hi there,

I recently had the ‘white screen on initiating the gw2 launcher’ issue. I followed some steps from other forums posts (deleting the Guild Wars 2 folder in the Application Support folder). The game now runs fine, however each time I launch GW2, it ‘re-patches’ or verifies all 240k files before letting me on (usually takes between 5-10min). It is annoying as you cannot log in and play immediately.

I realise that this isn’t as bad of an issue as others are having, but has anyone had this issue or know of a fix for it? It is slowly driving me insane :s

Many thanks,
Lan

A:

Just checking, have you edited the cider command preferences or run the game using the -repair command before?
Also, can you ensure that there is actually a GW2 folder in Application Support and that it isn’t rebuilding it every time you launch the game.

The easiest solution for this:
Open your applications folder>>
Right click ‘Guild Wars 2’>>
Click ‘Show Package Contents’>>
Contents>>Resources>>Transgaming>>C_drive>>GW2>>
Inside that folder ^. Is a file called GW2.dat, it should be around 17GB. COPY IT TO YOUR DESKTOP.>>
Delete the Guild Wars 2 application, the Guild Wars 2 folder in Application Support and the transgaming files in the preferences folder in the library (if you know how, if you don’t it probably doesn’t matter).>>
Guild Wars 2 should now be completely removed.
Go to guildwars2.com and download the game. Begin the installer, but close it when it begins to download all of the game files again.
Repeat the initial instructions on how to get to the Package Contents of Guild Wars 2 and replace the new GW2.dat with the one you copied on to your desktop, this will put all of the game files back.

Now when you launch Guild Wars 2 it might do a short download to verify the contents of the .dat, but after that I would expect it to run normally and allow you to log in and play instantly (providing there hasn’t been a patch to the client of course).

Haha, glad you took my meaning
It’s very easy to chuck a command into their and forget about it the next time you launch the game :P

I am having the same issue, what file do I edit for the -repair…

I have removed the .dat, I have twice installed fresh but I still get tgupdate 1.11 every single time I start, I have checked permissions and recurrsively verified.

I do not know what file to edit and append -repair to.

Any help to stop this non-stop “redownloading” would be appreciated!

This is the only place I could find: <key>CedegaGameName</key>
<string>C:\GW2\Gw2.exe</string>
<key>CiderGameOptions</key>
<string>—cmdline “-repair”</string>
<key>ClientBuild</key>
<string>5</string>
<key>TGBundleName</key>
<string>Guild Wars 2</string>
<key>apURL</key>
<string>http://cider.ncplatform.net/Live</string>;

I have done this many times and I still get the issue, can someone simply give me binaries and I will manually update to 1.11 instead of their broken launcher?

I would like to update and I submitted a ticket but whomever is handling my request is certainly not the brightest (or sharpest if that’s your preference) crayon in the box.

Oh, and when I launch, it “updates” and runs, I close and ground hog day all over again. And, I did remember to remove the -repair.

You removed that -repair? Cause that will cause it to do that stuff over and over again.
Deleting the Guild Wars 2 folder in the Application Support folder (There are instructions in a lot of posts in this forum section) and making sure that the -repair command isnt in that config file is all I can suggest. (I can’t post instructions right now but I will later if Kylla doesn’t beat me to it

Also I doubt anyone has the binaries for the update.

Lol okay, I’ll bite and post ;p

I’ll post our basic instructions for deleting the config file, etc. This will reset all of your In-game settings and it will clear your login/password details if you like to keep them saved. Read it completely prior to attempting. And please, make sure te -repair command is removed from your settings as listed above…. I’ll also post one-time only repair instructions if you need it in the future.

Instructions for your gw2folder:

Read carefully to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues

Mine is located under the hidden Library folder (navigate using finder, do not use spotlight to search)

/[yourharddrivename]/users/[yourusername]/library/application support/guild wars 2

You may want to copy/paste this folder to your desktop as a temporary back up, just in case.

Delete the contents of that specific folder (you should see files like this contained within “config, dyndata.dat, user.reg, userdef.reg, and folders p_drive and wineserver…namestuff…loca..[long name]” just to list a few), then re-run the client..

~~Your folder is probably hidden (as is the default). Hidden folders display as greyed out text and icons. I found this after googling:

http://m.wikihow.com/See-Hidden-Folders-on-Mac-OS-X-and-Other-Recent-Models

Instructions for one-time repair:

Open Terminal

Type the following:

/applications/guild\ wars\ 2.app/contents/MacOS/cider —use-dos-cwd C:Gw2 -- C:\\GW2\\GW2.exe -repair

You can copy and paste that in, but (check the dash) you must change the dash before the word USE or this will fail the forum shows an em dash (—), but it is supposed to be 2 consecutive en dashes (-). Run it and let it go until finished. FYI if you type the command yourself or paste it, they are 2 dashes (-) side by side… I’m noticing one sometimes looks like an em dash… It’s 2 en dashes though. (the dash before USE is 2 regular dashes)… Reiterated due to previous confusion about that dash on these forums.

Thank you for your post. This will be very helpful and should be a sticky for others.

However, this did not work. I get the following. (I did make sure of “—repair”)

:~ johnsontrav$ /applications/guild\ wars\ 2.app/contents/MacOS/cider —use-dos-cwd C:Gw2 — C:\\GW2\\GW2.exe —repair
2013-06-26 06:04:03.435 cider[1773:507] failed to launch task: launch path not accessible
/applications/guild wars 2.app/contents/MacOS/cider: cannot find ‘—use-dos-cwd’

Looks like permissions but, it is not as, I have made sure to grab a fresh installer and just in case I have set permissions to admin and wheel on chown.

can someone just post a link to dropbox or box with 1.11 launcher? I can copy my .dat back (no problem).

I have checked over and over and made sure to get application support removed too, I have downloaded the installer and always downloads 1.0.008467, then launches and updates; tgupdate 1.11; never ends. So, I just want to download the 1.11 launcher (or what changed) manually and be done with this crazy nonsense.

Any help would be appreciated.

(heads up! I’m going to make 2 long posts)

Sounds like a really odd problem, could I have you try one more thing? Afterwards, I think you need a ticket and cross your fingers you get someone who knows the difference between Mac & pc <.<

Try running your client from a root account. You need to have administrator access to do it, but I’ll post the instructions (I’ll post instrctions for 10.7 and 10.8 since I haven’t a clue what os you have, remember to DISABLE THIS AFTERWARDS) it is not a good thing to leave your account as a root user for security reasons, please disable when finished

10.7:

1. Open Directory Utility

This is located under [yourharddrivename]/System/Library

2. Click the LOCK

3. Enter an Administrator Account Name and Password

4. Click OK

5. Go to the EDIT menu, choose “enable root user”

6. Enter the root password you want to use in both the password and verify boxes

Click OK

10.8:

Support.apple.com/kb/PH11331

Run the client after enabling this, but disable after. Please let me know if this helps, if not follow my next post, then if no results, file a ticket!

Okay, if that didn’t help, try steps 1-4 once more, yes, you will be repeating a couple steps again, but I’d rather waste a few minutes for something to work rather than have odd behaviour in my system. If anything helps, please let me know. If not, follow step 6.

1.) run software update to ensure all drivers and os are up to date.

2.) try repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility first. Then…

3.) repair the client install

4.)Perhaps after doing that, if it doesn’t work, you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps this will clear your saved login info and in-game settings.

Mine is located under the hidden Library folder (navigate using finder, do not use spotlight to search)

/[yourharddrivename]/users/[yourusername]/library/application support/guild wars 2

You may want to copy/paste this folder to your desktop as a temporary back up, just in case.

Others claim alt+clicking a file/folder unhides the contents, but that was never successful for me. At least the link has visuals for you. Hope it helps.

5.) check support.mac.com for instructions on how to reset your pram and smc.

6.) If none of this works, check the sticky and submit a ticket, then please come back here and report the fix that worked for you.

I have done all above. I still get the same result.

I have been a power user since 2003. Tech support is worthless.

Best hope I have is for someone to PLEASE compress and upload your GW2 (1.11) without the transgaming>GW2 directory… This would be a big help!

In case someone whom is not familiar with this request:

1. goto your Guild Wars 2 app, choose “view package contents”
2. Navigate to “Resources|transgaming|c_drive|GW2”
3. Copy to your desktop
4. when done copying to desktop, delete the directory GW2 (the one located in transgaming)
5. navigate back to the Guild Wars 2 app
6. control+click the Guild Wars 2 app
7. Select “compress”
8. upload to your dropbox or somewhere please and post the link
9. go back to your desktop
10. copy the folder GW2 back to Resources|transgaming|c_drive| (follow steps 1&2)

Someone please help with a copy of that update. Thank you.

I do not know why the developers do not just remake the installer with the current launcher!, why use the installer to place 1.0 and then use updater in launcher to update. Reaching around your head to scratch your nose

Thank you

I’m not exactly sure if this is against the EULA, but I know I don’t want to take a chance at being banned.

You may want to file a ticket explaining the situation and everything you have attempted to fix this, there might be something specific they could do to fix the issue for you.
