5) An authenticator like what Blizzard has to prevent hacking. It’s becoming more of an issue and I’ve had 3 guild mates and 2 friends in the last 2 months get hacked. I don’t mind spending $5 for a physical one, but I’d like something more secure than what’s in place now.

They have an email authentication from when this issue first cropped up where it requires you to approve a login from any IP address unless you choose to save your preference

Anyway this isn’t really a mac beta specific issue anyway and I hate off topic posts

1. Native client / OpenGL rendering. Turbine pulled it off quite well, as have other developers of note. I hope this would address the majority of issues out there related to the wrapper and cider (performance, OOM texture crashes, gamma bug, TP) and come close to parity with the Windows client. Effort put into improving the current client without addressing the bigger picture is, frankly, a waste of resources.

2. Communication. If, for example, you know that there’s been yet another certificate revocation & reissue that will break the TP for the mac client, it’s not enough to post a paragraph in the Mac sub-forum and call it good. This is a major bug that affects the entire mac client-base. The info page that appears when the client is launched should contain a note about the bug and a link to the forum post. Surely the server that generates that page can tell if the request is coming from the Mac client, and send a tailored response.

3. Testing. We’ve recently had updates with game-breaking bugs that have affected a huge number of players, and these bugs have become apparent after only a few minutes of play. I have to believe they would have be caught with the barest minimum of unit testing on the mac client, but since they weren’t, I wonder what kind of testing, if any, is carried out, or even if it’s possible to test in a traditional developmental manner with cider (is it a black box?)

Somebody on the team needs to understand how the wrapper and cider work at a low, technical level, and flag code changes that might affect the mac client. A QA process needs to be put in place to specifically test these flagged changes.

There’s no need for a 4th and 5th ‘wish’ if the 1st one is granted.

Firstly, Thank you for taking a renewed interest in the Mac client. I hope this is an indication that the player base on Mac has become large enough to warrant attention.

As many have suggested, either a native client, or, assisting the Cider team to support 64 bit or multiple processor cores would be my first priority, but that’s a tall order. Still, hopefully we warrant that attention now.

Otherwise, my other four requests are:

1) TP. Please.
2) Work to eliminate OOM issues within the confines of the Mac Client and Cider. This may mean artificially capping textures on the Mac client or other changes, but texture-related crashes, and the TP represent the two most common issues I have as a mac player.
3) Communicate updates in the beta forum letting us know your progress.
4) Please consider creating a Beta tester roundtable or other means for your Mac player base to assist you in testing or finding issues. I’m sure I’m not the only one who plays Guildwars who is also versed in OSX QA, or otherwise able to provide valuable feedback. We want to help you. Truly.

Thanks!

Lots of people whining here about wanting “a native client.” I’ll speak up against the idea. Do not put time and money into chasing such a ridiculous idea. I’ve been playing games on Mac for over 20 years. I know that “native client” means being behind the Windows version in features, having it’s own unique problems and bugs to fix and performance on Windows computers will still be better because Windows graphic card drivers are more advanced than Apple’s. Players who want all the dancing bologna can Bootcamp to Windows. Casual players like me are happy with turning down the graphics sliders.

Fix the Trading Post issues. That’s clearly a game-stopping problem.

None of your complaints will be resolved with a magic unicorn “native Mac client.” In fact, such could very well be worse that the current client. The current client, of course, has issues. What does beta software mean to you, anyway?

Also, the shift keys, used for writing proper sentence case so readers can understand you, are on both the right and left corners of your keyboard. Try using the correct word; “you”, not the letter “u”. This will aid in getting people to respect what you write and not get the impression that you’re illiterate, lazy or stupid. I had to read your post three times to understand it.

To be honest, I don’t think this client is even worthy of being called a Beta. There haven’t been any updates to our client either to improve or update it in general (apart from small long overdue bug fixes). The last update dates from over a year ago.
We have a right to ask for better service and a better client.

Now as i stated in an earlier response, I do understand that time and money could probably be used in other perhaps more efficient ways, BUT I still believe we should be able to voice our request for a native, if not then an improved client. If we don’t complain or keep “whining”, as you state it, chances are that we’ll never get decent improvements. We need to speak up, to be heard in the first place!

And I apologize for going off topic

You clearly have no understanding as to programming and the nature of it. The two clients would not be in any way better or worse. The fact of the matter is we are running a Windows based client with a Cider Wrapper around it. Its just a fancy way for saying a lazy mans client. A native client in every way would be better. As by using the Windows based with a wrapper we are limited in what our system specs can actually accomplish. Maybe do some research before making statements that are just plain ignorant.
Thanks

Hi Danicia,

Firstly, I can understand that this is a BETA, understanding crashes, glitches, miscommunications and purely testing the demand to justify the outlay to a full client are part of the reason a BETA exists so none of the above are in my top 5. What I’d like to see the beta explore are only 3.

1) access to the high res graphics options; textures, character textures, character model quality – I suspect for some macs having those options available/on will make performance worse, but a full client would need these options tested beforehand in beta – (I’m hoping this is not my own ignorance that I’m not getting these options because my mac can’t support them, I’m pretty sure it can.)

2) a customised news feed on the login screen for mac players; rather than having to trawl through the increasingly negative forum or encounter mac players in game who aren’t aware of ‘why their tp is down’ etc. it’d be great if the news feed at the start included info like that ‘recertification news’ that dropped tp for some time a couple days ago. It’d help with communications to mac beta users so much.

3) in addition to the ‘minimum’ spec listed, a ‘recommended optimum’ mac spec where you think the beta runs best on. Ignoring issues caused by connection speeds I’m curious for the mac beta what is an optimum spec that at least hardware spec wise should not cause graphics crashes, demand too much of the processor etc. That may mollify some mac beta users who from high expectations of the beta are blaming the beta for issues rather than identifying shortfalls in their mac spec. And some issues I know aren’t limited just to the mac beta; lags, crashes from effects during events are experienced on GW2 irrespective of being on windows/mac client – sometimes hardware, sometimes software, sometimes connection.

Thank you and the mac team for continuing to work on this beta!

In order of priority:

1) Trading post – no reliable fix besides random luck. Most of all it is part of game, NOT WORKING AT ALL. I have no problem with worse performance, but this is 0 performance

2) PvP crashes, skill lag- dont know if its mac or your pvp servers problem, just keep in mind, the game MUST be playable at PVP level to be viable on mac

3) windowed 1680×1050 resolution is verticaly too big. It doesnt bother any pvp, just a few pixels hiding the bottom levleling bar. Not big problem, but an email to Apple to finaly hide or completely remove their 10years outdated status bar would be aprieciated

4) thx for work, 2011 iMac and im doing fine in PvP. Maybe a tone down of particle effects would all getting less 1fps spikes

5) its ok, but dont let new stuff make things worse

1. Please get the Cider team to update the fullscreen code so that it only goes fullscreen where the client is running. Right now all other monitors go black.
2. Get the Cider team to support multiple-monitors as the Windows client does.
3. Please hire a UI/UX designer to take a look at the various user-interfaces in the game. Some of them are really bad. If you don’t believe me, here’s 200 Flame Ram blueprints. Please send back the 100 supers when you’re done.
4. Crashing at ANY graphics settings is due to bugs (most likely in Cider). It’s hard to imagine it would be hard to find them if you actually tried. (PM me if you need help with this.)
5. Unless the Cider team is dead and no one’s doing anything with the platform they should be working on a 64-bit version. Eventually, Mac won’t support 32-bit anything.

For extra credit:
Let people in this forum know that it’s an enormous undertaking to write a game client and ANet has nowhere near the resources to do that. (Oh wait, I just did.)

Hi,

Maybe I’m too late but still I’d like to add some input. Hope number of posts matters.

1. Wvw lag. Sometimes it seems game isn’t competitive because of lag in WvW. must lower graphic settings to minimum.
2. TP. I haven’t played GW2 for couple of months but it seems they made some improvements on that. Two month ago it was like lotery. It will work or not.
3. Still hoping native client. I’ve been playing GW2 on imac i5 3.1, 16gb RAM with AMD 6970m 1Gb and so far had no problems at all. Settings vary from medium to ultra. trying to keep ~30-40FPS. Mac heats up very quickly. I believe code optimization would add more performance and reduce heating.
4. More official information from ArenaNet regarding top requests.
5. Do not forget apple users in future. Sales shows more and more people choose mac over PC in europe. Market is increasing. Please do not force them to use windows.

Thank you for listening. Waiting for actions.

1) Not crashing to desktop in WvW is by far my biggest wish. It is one of my favourite things about this game compared to other MMOs, and it sucks that I’m not allowed to do it.

2) Native client. Yup #2. I’m happy to sit in beta-wrapper-land if the game works. Native client may fix some things, but as long as I can play the game without crashing to desktop everytime things get interesting, I will be a happy shopper.

3) Continued communication and support. (I don’t remember ever seeing any patch notes with fixes – only new content).

And with that I have to log a complaint about the current support. I currently have a ticket which has been open for several days and it is just going backwards and forward because the support agents aren’t doing the very basic first response action of ‘READ THE TICKET’. Sersiously. I stated the problem. I stated my platform and that I’m using OS 10.9 So far I have been given advice for Windows, OS 10.7 and OS 10.8.

I seem to remember the previous support system was much better. It was a bother to have two logins, but at least they got things done with a pleasant demeanor.

So there we go. I’m not greedy. Just three wishes.

It isn’t, it just happens more frequently on Macs and at lower video settings due to it being a cider port (that pretends to be 32bit windows).

In all honesty, I think it’s incredibly misleading advertising the game as available on the Macintosh platform; it’s not. Unless you have a very recent machine, the game runs at a snail’s pace. The only thing keeping me from this game is it’s horrible compatibility, and that’s coming from a GW veteran of many many years.

I switched to a MacBook Pro, and due to my new SSD and some other weird technical issues, bootcamp isn’t an option for me.

1) reduce CPU usage. 100% on mid 2011 MacBook Pro under osx when GW2 under windows on same machine has much much less CPU usage. This is because the Cider wrapper used in OSX doesn’t allow the CPU to idle …

2) Native client. This would solve a lot of the issues and lay the groundwork for greater portability in the future such as native Linux client

3) All current issues could be addressed by 2), however working on 1) would increase the life of the cooling fans while playing GW2.
