It is ridiculous to send an unnamed moderator to do this once a week. Why not just make Kylla or Trog a named Mod for the forum seeing as how they do more work then the intern/employee ANet pays to police our forum. I mean at this point it is just becoming sloppy.

I think what you all fail to realise is that Anet was in no way obliged to make GW2 available for OSX. They are a game developer and the time and effort it would take to create a native OSX client far exceeds the profit that could be gained from it. As it stands GW2 runs just fine (and actually very well) on supported macs. Yes there are some problems people encounter but those aren’t actually problems with the GW2 client, they are problems with Cider (and can be fixed easily as I have shown people).

Cut them a little slack, they’ve provided something they didn’t have to provide and it is a working solution. If you aren’t happy then install Windows via bootcamp or don’t play the game.

(David, there are legal reasons why a professional company should not and will not place random people as moderators on the official forums. So while it’s a nice idea since there are a few people around here who are clearly very helpful, it isn’t possible) – I suspect that they use an unnamed moderator account for the moderations of this forum because they don’t want to have their employees sent nasty messages or verbally abused.

Why would I cut them slack if I paid them money for this product? Your logic is completely flawed. Would I have to cut slack to someone that made my food at a restaurant if something was wrong? According to you, yes I would because they don’t have to give that to me. Even if I give that person my money “they’ve provided something they didn’t have to provide” so I shouldn’t complain.

While I am glad that we have a working community that will offer help to others on everything that we could possibly solve, we should at least have some sort of feedback from the company. Slack can be cut when we finally get at least one response from a developer stating current progress being made or anything else. I would cut slack if we had a dev that would pop in and type out the message, “Hello, we are still here and monitoring.”

On a different note, I screenshot a post that a dev made on one of the suggestion forums that summed up what was happening fairly well. Since they have limited resources they only have to pick the most important things to monitor and reply to. This being the actual tech support forums, the suggestion forums, and the bug reporting forums.

EDIT: I agree with you Foxx about the legal reasons. I wasn’t actually suggesting they be made mods but simply providing what I thought to be a humorous response to the moderator activity. They almost function as mods without having that power. But without them, what kind of forum would this be… The entire premise of a forum is for self help and help from other players so on all fronts, I would say this forum is working. /endrant

You’re still making the mistake of thinking that it is Anet who develops the OSX version of GW2. That would be Cider, if you have complaints about how it runs then they are who you should be complaining to. Arenanet develop on Windows, OSX is unfamiliar territory to probably the majority of their staff (although I do know at least one of their staff members uses a mac).
The restaurant analogy doesn’t work either. You’ve gotten exactly what you paid for. The mac version has always been touted as a beta, technically there is no guarantee that they will choose to continue to offer it (although there would be almost no reason not to).
I’m sorry if I seem like I’m being tough but it’s just a bit silly to me. I actually pre-ordered the game before launch, before a mac version even existed, and was happy to play using Wine with half and half textures and graphical glitches galore.

If you want a restaurant analogy (I’m posting this with humour in mind, not to be nasty, snarky, rude or provoking) – the chef has come to see you at your table and told you that he is working on a new recipe, it may or not be absolutely dreadful tasting, maybe it will taste wonderful, he can’t offer you any guarantees – you agree to pay full price for this experimental food. It’s not the chef’s fault if you aren’t happy with the food because you purchased it knowing full well that it could be good or bad. It’s the same situation with the Mac Beta. (Although you are of course still entitled to any support which a regular account is offered since your account and keys are identical to anyone elses – which does in itself raise issues, but it gets a bit too complicated for me to bother thinking about >.>)

Foxx, you misunderstand the whole point of this thread. It’s not about complaining about the Mac client, as I’ve said before, this was a pleasant surprise and convenience for Mac users like myself.. I also purchased the collector’s edition for windows prior to launch, so this was just a treat.

What we are making a point about is how on the support FAQ page, they specifically state that the Mac client is supported here, but 5 months ago, they stopped supporting here. We just want them to update/inform players of this status. Ideally, by making a sticky on these forums (original title of thread)

As for support, I clearly state to anyone seeking help that they could try the basic troubleshooting steps, then absolutely submit a ticket. If Anet can’t help with those, then there is a problem. If they can’t help because it’s a transgaming port, then that also should be remedied in good faith since many paid specifically for the Mac client.

We just wanted a response to the very first post on this thread. Yep, we get sidetracked and would like answers, but that is the point here.

P.s. Ashley responded to me on the tech support forum and stated that our bugs should still be addressed on the bug forums, but as of yesterday, she responded and then deleted her response to my bug thread on there (just before I could read it).

Oh Foxx, I completely agree with you and apologize if any of my post seemed rude on the matter. It was a late night and I was just scrounging to find an analogy that would fit the situation. I do like your analogy more because it seems to be a more tight fit glove than my oven mitt.

And I completely agree that even with bug galore I would still play this client. I only recently got a Mac and began to play on the Mac version. Before that I had only ever owned PC. I preordered the game the day it became available to preorder for PC. I believe it is my infatuation with the series that leads me to not really care. I loved GW and highly anticipated GW2 since it was supposed to be GW:Utopia. Either way, I agree that we shouldn’t be directly mad at the team for not fixing these problems as we are running it through a third party, but I still believe they should monitor these forums and serve as a competent liaison of what is happening.

It’s not that I am actually mad or upset about any bugs because no game will ever be bug-free (it can be close but never perfect) but more at the lack of awareness/knowledge. IF I were one of the leaders of ANet (which I never will be), the moment I decided to open up this opportunity to the Mac OSX, I would’ve sent about 5-10 employees to be trained in this area. Even if this is a small portion, it shows dedication to the customer and really helps out the company as these employees will be able to train others to a certain degree. Overall, it broadens the knowledge of developer teams/members and allows for more functionality/functional workplace.

Am I making sense or do I seem to ramble like usual?

EDIT: Well, it seems like an end to all our troubles may be near as our good friend Ashley is appearing here. Perhaps she will be able to help.

I just saw Ashley’s post also. I’m pretty stoked to see her posting here to help our maccies having troubles. Perhaps she’ll be able to stick around to help those still having issues and newbies to the Mac client (at least check in with us every couple days). I know she’s quite busy on the tech support forum, but because the FAQ points new maccies here, it would be great to have a knowledgable tech support person able to help out, if a Mac specialist isn’t available.

:) yay progress, I hope she doesn’t leave us! ~crossing fingers~

Hi thanks for replying in these forums at least.

Anyway i think it is incredible a company as Arena Net didn’t have a proper Mac team even after launched a beta client. Nobody is working on it? it is really absurd.

I’m sorry but really i regret giving you my money, i’ve also buy item in the store… I put my money where my mouth is, for sure i will think twice before giving Arena net a cent in the future.

The Port is managed by Cider, so any issues with it are issues with Cider not with Anet…

Agreed, however, it’s a shot in the dark as far as my knowledge goes with the mac client and cedega ports go. While I totally appreciate the effort on Ashley’s part i also feel like it’s hard to come by the unknown anomalies that are present in the mac client wrapper. Fortunately or Unfortunately, anet has somewhat mac savvy players that are willing to help out other folks experiencing issues, meaning we are their unsupported, unpaid mac gurus (kayla and trog). Sorry to point that out since i love the TLC they put into the game, regardless of my criticism, but it’s going to be a tough road to get back into the mac folks graces, sorry Ashley, i fear an uphill battle ahead. When some company sells you a product you expect it to be supported, beta or not.

It’s also important to remember that the forums actually represent a VERY VERY SMALL MINORITY of the actual playerbase. There will be tons and tons of players using the OSX Client who don’t visit the forums and have zero problems. That makes the people complaining on the forums a minuscule minority. That of course doesn’t make peoples problems any less real or frustrating, but just trying ti inject a little perspective :P

Thanks for the thought Ashley. We’re just really hoping for some news or a confirmation or something, but your help on this forum is very appreciated… At least our issues may be communicated to the higher powers unlike how it was before.

Foxx, you don’t know this and no one has confirmed it. I highly doubt Anet would leave their product in someone else’s hands solely, most likely they paid to get the port and a few months of support from their team, but furthermore, they’d have to pay for future support from an outside team. No offense to those still trying to help us (thank you again Ashley), but they are still responsible for the support provided to the Mac client users.

As for the peeps on the forums, I’ve said it time and time again that peeps only come to the forums when they have an issue and yes, that’s a fairly small minority of players, but some of us just stick around to help others because we found help here once.

So, let’s just wait for our response and hope it’s favourable, be grateful for having a support rep actually reading our forum and offering help to us, and just keep helping those who need it… Without constructive words, there is no reason to post.

I’m absolutely ecstatic that the hawk bug has finally been acknowledged. That is a huge step forward for us (sadly).

As far as the rest of the recent posts, I think some of it is completely missing the point. The main problem here is that by calling this a beta instead of continuing with their unofficial sanctioning of using WINE they have taken the responsibility of supporting the product. At the moment it is somewhat unclear where you get the support (sidenote, my experiences with support for general game things has been positive). Not only is finding the support a bit convoluted (i.e. listing this as a place for support when it isn’t) but it is still extremely Windows centric.

Essentially, they either need to commit to supporting this beta or rename it hobby or something else that makes it clear what it is.

Good points! However, that was exactly why we were trying to get attention back to this forum. We’re looking for answers!

Fine, call it beta and never advance the project (but please fix bugs that were introduced along with new features lol), but be honest about that on the “support” page and don’t point people here stating that this IS the support page. Or, give us the support paying customers deserve and continue to advance this project by creating a Mac support team (2-5 peeps who know exactly what they’re doing is immense) who can officially work on and address bugs/issues Mac users experience and work on getting our client out of beta or start on the path of a native client (much more people resource intensive).

Coming clean with info isn’t that much to ask.

While we’re on that topic, has anyone read Jon Peters’ post on the game bug forum: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/The-forum-bug-process/first#post2215900 ? But it leaves me thinking that it doesnt include us. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I’m a mac only user and just wanted to thank Killaa and Trog for their great help. I bought the mac beta saying to myself: I’ll learn how to play on the beta client and when the finished version is released I’ll already be a decent player. But after downloading the mac client (two weeks ago) I was completely frustrated with GW2 mac performance (unstable fps making it almost unplayable). Looking for advice on this forum I understood the beta was just a cider wrap and risking to remain a beta forever… and my frustration grew higher (sorry for my bad english).
Thank to killaa and trog advice I managed to get to a playable situation and am starting to enjoy my gw2 experience without constantly looking at fps rate. People at Anet should be thankful to Killaa and Trog for their work on this forum.

Thanks guys! I appreciate your patience and I’m trying to get more attention paid to these forums and these issues so I’m doing what I can

Hi Ashley, it’s been a couple weeks now so I just thought I might ask to see if you had any updates for us? Thanks!

Fox, not any real updates on this though. She responded to issues with Gems (obviously the team came in to fix that since it hurt their pocketbooks) but they have not yet addressed this issue.

Ok seriously I’m not trying to be rude here but creating your own topic on the issue and bumping two existing topics really isn’t helpful. There are people who have clients that won’t start and having multiple topics sitting here on the same issues doesn’t change anything. Ashley has already seen this topic, which is the longest on the issue, so bumping older ones and making your own isn’t achieving anything except clutter.

Indeed they are really pathetic. I think we should act together in other ways….

I’ve lost any hope, i highly doubt it will change anything… i will think twice before purchasing something from NCSoft/ArenaNet.

me and my friends purchased the game the week they announce the Mac beta. Now we all stop playing because poor performance, support and bugs of mac version. No updates? No info about beta? It seems like a bad joke.

Elders Scrolls online have a native Mac client and the lead programmer is even present on big Mac forums like InsideMacGames.com…. i just feel cheated about a fake beta, they just took my money for a CIDER WRAPPER!!!!

Buyer beware. You could have easily found out that the beta was a cider wrapper before you purchased. I’m not saying your concerns are any less valid and I’m not trying to devalue how you feel. But you can’t get angry at them for information that was provided to you.

What? A cider wrapper should be in the best scenario a temporary solution. At least they should update it regularly since if you tweak Cider you can get decent results. Some games like Dragon Age 2 runs pretty decent even if they are ciderized.
Since a big company like ArenaNet start their adventure in Mac land with a beta release you think it will get better and better not worst every patch and without support.
They really deserve nothing especially someone defending they greedy and stupid strategy, they no sense support and “beta” cycle.
