14 day ban on first chat offense?
You know what? This is America we should say whatever the heck we want. What is the point of block, or the profanity filter if they are just going to ban people anyways? It just looks like a good way to cheese people away from this game.
3 days sounds a bit long even, I’d suggest 48 hours on a first offense, 5 days on a second offense, and 2 weeks on a 3rd offense and after that then well… Three strikes and you’re out’a here.
I think that what Anet needs to keep in mind here is that these bans don’t really just affect the people they are imposed on, they affect all that see them and hear about them and realize that 2 weeks is way too severe a punishment for a language violation.
While I personally don’t use crude language or call other people names, it bothers me a great deal to be playing a game where they are willing to impose a 14 day ban supposedly for a first strike offense that is simply a language violation.
Don’t get me wrong Anet, I’m all for perma banning accounts that use bots or exploit the game, but language violations? 14 days? It really does sound like somebody pushed the wrong button on your end when issuing the ban.

Jeeze I must be a raving dolt as last I checked GW2 is a global product and belived that until just now that I lived in the UK, what a fool I have been to misunderstand that simple truth of “This is America”

Oh that just makes this whole situation better now doesn’t it? Oh this isn’t America, so that gives ArenaNet the right to crap on everyone’s right of expression….
Bellok, No but you knew what the rules are seeing as how we all agreed to them with the ToS and EULA, while I agree 14 days is a bit harsh, I also think that if your language was kept in check with nothing deliberately offensive or inflammatory said you wouldn’t be facing any bans be it 3 of 14 day. So the entire point is moot, Or if you please… Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.
I havn’t been banned, as I don’t talk that way in chat anyways. However there is nothing wrong with the mechanics that are already in place that enable you to block someone, or use a profanity filter. To me that should be enough, the rules stated in the EULA are over board. To me it is just as vindictive of an act to try and get someone banned just because you didn’t like what a person said in chat. What if the person talking in chat didn’t think that what they were saying was rude or inflammatory? There are all kinds of scenarios that can pan out here.
ArenaNet have taken measures because its a family game. If you don’t like that, then don’t play.
I for one am happy I don’t have to block/ignore every second player because of their inability to curb their own language.
Was 14 days too long? We have no idea, we don’t what was said, it’s duration or even if it was a one off.
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”
Bellok, You mean like Adolf Crirtler as a name or those using the N- word or dire homophobic, sexist or even racial bile?
There are certain things that no leeway should be allowed, First and foremost it’s a game (even more apt is its a high fantasy game, there is no America, EU, or North Korea et-al) nationalistic ideals, religion and hate speech should be left at the door.
The devs have been quite clear the odd F-Bomb is acceptable in which case yes using Block/Ignore is fine. I think before anyone gets uppity about a 14 day ban we should consider that what was said may have actually warranted it. Especially when you consider some things said are illegal in certain territories (eg Hitler jokes/ comments in Germany). With the potential if left unpunished could in extreme circumstances remove Anets rights to have the game live in that place.
BTW I was assuming that you were not banned but using the word you to refer to those who are banned for language infractions.
That is very harsh, but perhaps for the best long-term as people learn how not to behave in-game.
We’re in their homes and in their heads and we haven’t the right.

Aha, but don’t you see it’s a two way street here? If people don’t like the way people talk in a game then maybe they shouldn’t be playing either? This subject is really all about a clash between people who can’t keep their mouths shut, and people who are so sensitive they die a little inside when they hear a swear word. We have to meet in the middle folks otherwise we are never going to get anywhere. Once we start favoring one group over another then we start losing rights for the opposing group. People have the right to say whatever they want, however people have the right to not be subject it. The best way to meet in the middle is to allow those offended to ignore it. There are mechanics in game to help with that. It is unfair however to subject people who speak more risque to be subject to your beckon call to censorship however.
Not worth the continued feeding, especially as I’m running out of troll fodder and the supply shop is shut atm!
Anets game, Anets rules.
Don’t like it, don’t play!
Simples!

It’s a global game, and “Freedom of Speech” refers to the containment of the U.S. government’s constraint of free speech. Please let’s not go there with “say what you want” concepts on private servers in a Teen-rated game intended for an international audience. Thanks.

Is this right? I would have learned enough if it was just 3 days, but 14? I know my actions were wrong, but why so long?
I literally got an automated response email when I opened a ticket saying exactly this: “If your account is blocked for a chat offense, the account is given a three-day suspension.” Nothing about possibly being more, or 14 days; just three (3) days. Please explain? Thanks.
If you need help, please post in the sticky post with your ticket number. Thanks.

I 100% support names being report able since they cannot be blocked. To use Homophobic, or sexist as discriptions of a person is just as intolerant as the person’s using those terms. You are no better than they are. I don’t condone the terms people use, however I respect their right to express them, and you should too. Like I said there are mechanics here in game that allow you to block them, and from my experience these people in chat are far and between that allow me to manage the content myself. It is vindictive and rude to go out of your way to ruin their gameplay just because you are silly and can’t ignore ignorant people and what they say.
