The Mac Beta runs pretty well on my 2012 retina MacPro. However, the machine seriously starts to overheat almost immediately. Even keys become hot to the touch. Do other rMBPro users experience this problem? Can anyone offer advice or (even better) a solution?

Sadly I am worried that playing GW2 will fry this supposedly quality laptop.

I have a similar problem on my Macbook. What I do to keep the heat down is to use an external fan underneath it to try to dissipate the heat. I have a laptop desk with a built in fan that does the job pretty nicely and keeps my laptop from getting too hot.

If your laptop gets too hot, it will do an emergency shutdown to prevent itself from frying, but it would be nice to avoid being in-game then suddenly having a black screen.

When in doubt, tough it out. That or panic. Either way.

I have the same problem. As soon as I launch the app my fans start running and doesn’t stop until I quit the app.

I know this really isn’t a solution for the Mac client, but I found that if you duel boot with Windows and run the Windows client, the Mac Book Pro Retina does not overheat as much and the game runs at a better frame rate.

There’s a difference between “Overheating” and “Getting very hot”. MacBooks have notoriously gotten extremely hot under load but are within their operating parameters. If they start overheating they’ll shut off before any damage can be done.

That being said when I first got my retina MBP I noticed that the fans started running full blast when I started the game because of the GPU and CPU running so hard. Yes, it gets hot and one of the first things I did was get something to wedge the back up the MBP up so it had more airflow around and under it (instead of having the desk heat up and start acting like an insulator for the heat). This helped with the temperature of the keyboard while I played.

For about a month now I’ve been running the game on a Thunderbolt display and have been keeping the MBP closed while playing (in a BookArc from TwelveSouth) and while the fans do run on high while I game I’ve never had an issue with overheating.
