ATI/AMD Black screen fix (for me)
be sure to install the latest caps as well as the drivers, they are not just for multi card users, and can clear up alot of issues for single card users.

Sounds more like a card not stable at its reference/factory clocks.
I have a pair of 7870’s now, the black screen issue comes in my exp from improper fan ramps built into the cards bios.
grab MSI Afterburner or Sapphire Trixx, and set a custom fan ramp where the fan runs at 100% when it hits 60c and ramps down below that, minimum speed being at least 20%.
and with Trixx(i like it better then afterburner) I find that I dont need more then an extra 5% to get 1200core/ram out of these cards(forgot to make sure trixx was running and got a black/gray screen in bc2, restarted and tried again with trixx running, 4hrs later still no problem(tested this 3 days running and its a heat issue not with the core but with the vrm’s on some modern cards, after talking with a friend who uses all nvidia, seems it hits both sides, tho nvdia cards show other problems rather then gray/black screens.)
they try to hard to keep cards always silent and not hard enough to ensure they stay cool…..been going on since the 8800gt days……(I had 4 8800gt’s cook themselves before bfg sent me an 8800gts 512 referb….)
