A few minutes ago, I started my GW2 client, for the third time today. If it matters, I have the client set to always run as admin. My PC is running windows 7 SP1.

This time, after about a minute of the client not connecting, an AVG notification popped up identifying GW2.exe as a trojan. Unfortunately my only options from this point were delete, or quarantine. I chose quarantine (because at least then I can send a notification to AVG).

Of course that means the executable was scrubbed from its previous locations. I’ve begun downloading the client again (taking longer than I expected, or I probably wouldn’t have bothered making this post). And I came to this forum for info. I’ve read the AVG post in the sticky section above, but I can’t make heads or tails of it… I’m using AVG free edition, and the ONLY part of it that opens for me is the user interface. So for instance, under “history” there is no “firewall log” or “system services” option. In fact this doesn’t seem like it was a firewall related issue to begin with.

Anyone else experienced anything like this? I haven’t touched anything on my computer since I played 4 (totally seamless) hours of wvw earlier this afternoon, except for watching some netflix on chrome. Could I have done something on my end without realizing it? Is this perhaps something amiss with my AVG?

Thanks for any input.

Unfortunately one of the best AVs has turn into a bloat ware over rated piece of junk lately completely uninstall it and get Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials these are both gaming friendly AVs.

Last I read Microsoft did away with Microsoft Security Essentials – it really was never very good anyway, despite what some people may think.

Don’t mind the poster above, it’s still free and it’s still updated and works just great. Microsoft has had AV/AM software since the early 90’s that works very well. But if you don’t like software that works perfectly with the operating system 100% of the time, you can totally get some other bloated software to do the same job

I have never had a false positive with it, it doesn’t stop my games from updating or any other piece of software I have. I’m a responsible surfer most of the time and don’t torrent the hell out of the internet so I don’t get invaded by software I put on the computer thinking it was a song or movie, but that’s just me.

Anyway, all you can do with AVG is report that false positive to the devs of AVG so they can exclude it in some random future update.

I run Microsoft security Essentials on all my system and have never had a issue. For the average user that’s all that’s needed, but if you are one of those that visits funny sites and likes to look at those funny pics and videos, you may need more protection in more ways than one. Then by all means run the bloat ware heavy duty AVs.

This How to Geek site looks so bogus and unprofessional and they quote from another bogus site AVtest .org that is a paid to be tested site. So if your an AV dev with deep pockets and are willing to pay to be tested then you get a high rating also the CEO of this paid to test site is named Guido Habicht, are you going to trust a man by the name of Guido to decide witch antivirus to use. Just because they use the .org does not mean they are nonprofit and are doing these test out of the kindness of their hearts they are doing these tests, if they are really doing any tests, to make a buck. As for the second link this article had a little more credibility to it but when it come right down to it they got their data from another paid to be tested site AV Comparative. How long would these sites last if they gave Microsoft Security Essentials a high rating. This Article actually gave Avast a top score with which I agree with that was my first recommendation. Yes MSE is not the best but for the average PC user that uses his or her head when surfing or downloading then MSE is just fine.

Use your brain and look at real world testing data to choose your AV solution.

Avast is in the top 97% of detection and they still have 0 false positives reported for the current go around of tests, considering they are still offering a fully functional AV/Malware suite for free, thats the best offer on the market.

If you want to pay for your AV then Panda soft or ESET is the way to go.
