I just got a new MacBook Pro 13", i5 2.6GHz, 8GB ram, Intel Iris 1536 MB. The default settings had it at 2560*1600 which I reduced to 1280*800 and all settings at Low. The frame rate hovered around 33-37 during the introduction with these changes. I know better than to expect 60 FPS all the time, but there are tricks with PCs, like shutting off nonessential services which can help boost performance. Are there any tricks like that for Macs?

What frame rate should I be aiming for on my machine? I didn’t get it for gaming, but I just bought this game and it’s going to be the only game on my machine.. I’d like to get it running as well as possible (without Bootcamp).

There’s not a lot you can do to improve the FPS you’re currently getting unfortunately.
The game is a cider port so it’s running in 32bit – which means it’s not making optimal usage of the CPU or the GPU, and then on top of that it can only utilise 4GB’s of RAM.

I would strongly suggest quitting any other applications, including smaller applications that might just be running in your menu bar. But other than that I don’t think there’s anything you can do to really improve performance. There is a config file where you can tweak how much vRAM the game recognises – but it doesn’t actually seem to have any impact.

I found that part of the config file from some old forum posts but noticed the same thing. Running at 1280×800 resolution with everything on low I get 35-45FPS so that’ll do.. my old, broken laptop got 20-30 with the same settings, so at least it’s playable now.
