Ati 7870, 40 fps?
System specs please…
Have you downloaded the newest 12.11 drivers from amd?

We need to know allot more information than just the GPU.. how about your cpu, OS, rametc etc etc
BTW post your complete spec helps a lot in getting helpful answers here.
Anyways, if you don’t understand why then read this:

Technical Support
Hi Lucas Ashrock – If you could provide us with the rest of your system specs this will help us better understand why you might be getting low FPS. If you simply updated your graphics card without updating any other hardware in your system, it is a possibility that your graphics card may be bottlenecking the rest of your system and causing if not contributing to this issue.
I bough this diamond, hoping to get my 80-120 fps expected from a highend gpu.
Why i have 40 fps? I followed the suggestions from the thread
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/FPS-and-Performance-based-issues-1/first#post338300Ending with the exact same fps, 40. Is Anet planning to improve high end videocards?
Such a disappointment.
That sounds about right. 7870 = 6970 only slightly faster and that 6970 on Core i7 3570k runs between 35-45fps.
So you’re GPU is normal.
System Spec’s are a Must for you to get any real help.
Make sure you turn off superscaler if you have a 1080p or higher resolution. It cuts FPS in half or more.
It’s not your GPU, I have the HD 7850, and always have 60-80 fps, sometimes reaches 100fps.

yeah, with VSync stops at 60fps, supposedly this improves the appearance but I see no difference

It doesn’t improve apearance it simpely syncs you fps with the refresh rate off your monitor so you wont get any screen tearing.

The game engine is not optimized and is heavily cpu bound, thats why you don’t see much of a difference with the new gpu.
Make sure you are keeping your Render Sampling: Native
If you already have it that way then you can:
1. Turn off your Shadows
2. Turn down your Shaders
It may not be as pretty as you like it but it should bump up your FPS, unless there already that way of course.
They are, 40 fps. Seeems behaving like if 40 fps fixed is always selected, guess a client bug
(edited by Lucas Ashrock.8675)
If you Fps is 40 on both High settings and Low Settings then your problem is somewhere there is a FPS limit turned on and set to 40 on your machine.
Check your Video Card options in GW2 and make sure you limit is turned off.
Check your Video Card Settings on your machine and make sure the limit is off.
On your machine there can be multiple places for this limit, it could be in your general setting or in advanced setting for just GW2.
If all else fails you could try and do a fresh Clean Install (Resets all your Settings ) of your video card drivers and this may remove the limit.
I had a fresh install of drivers, installing the new video card. I’m attempting to use 12.11 beta, let’s see. No, client is set on unlimited. Catalyst setting are on default, and even trying the suggestions of the dev on the post i linked, doesnt change.
Just to be clear, EVERY new game i tested runs at 120fps+, even BF3 fullhd ultra settings.
Is your V Sync turned on. If so try turning it off.
How V sync basicly works is if your monitor refresh rate is 80 hrz ( or FPS ) if your FPS drops to 79 then it automatically will reduce your max FPS in half to 40 to prevent graphical tears, If your FPS dips to 39 it will make your Max FPS 20 always cutting in 1/2. ( Or whatever ratio your monitor scales images down with)
Vsync is off. BTW i tried 12.11 beta, im having 50 fps. Not the uber fps i was expecting, but at least, better. Looking forward to some client improvements, having a highend spec
Silvermink.1456 Where do you turn off superscaler ?
Superscaler is one of the render options. It is normal by default in all 3 preset options.
My HD 7970 GHz edition arrives today. I will post what my experience is with it in this game later after I’ve had time to install and test. I fully expect there to be some loss of performance due to the ‘newness’ of the new series and drivers. But, I’ll see for sure later.
@Rabbiddog, Make sure you download the 12.11 beta driver for best perfomance, and do not install the driver that comes on the disc. also make sure you download and install the seperate CAPs Driver aswell 10.1

Yup, already downloaded them in preparation for the new arrival I also have Drivesweeper installed to completely wipe any current drivers.
Well that is weird, ive got 7870 as well but im getting mostly 60fps outside cities but my fps goes under 40fps in bigger cities.

Whelp, as expected I have issues with my new 7970 and GW2. My computer will blue screen after a few minutes in game. I even under clocked the card. Oh well, i’ll just have to wait for updated drivers, the game will still be around by then. Until then, I have plenty of other games to play.
On a side note, I was getting about 10FPS more in game than with my old card. But then again, I didn’t get the new card with this game in mind.
Lol. New drivers? The 7970 has been out since like what January? The 12.11 beta drivers are the newest drivers. Did you try those?
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Yes, but the previous drivers never took into account the 7000 series hardware changes. The new beta drivers are the first ones that were specifically put out with the 7000 series in mind and designed with it’s updated hardware changes in mind. That’s why the beta drivers give no gains to any previous series cards.
And yes, I have the updated drivers.
What was your old card, rabbid? It seems a little premature to buy a new card, get blue screens and then blame the card.

I see a HUGE difference. It makes moving the camera like butter and so fluid. With it off, it just looks “off”. Nothing you can see as easily as ou can feel it though.

I finally got a similar performance enabling I5 gpu + Ati using AI suite 2. Still it’s wierd how our highend videocard gives us 35 40 fps inside cities and just 60 outdoor (alone). Doing a dragon, goes back to 30 40 fps. I truly hope the november 15th update will bring us a better engine with proper performance, accordingly to our video card. I want 120 + fps as expected from a highend card, not barely when lucky 40 like an entry level
BTW Rabbiddog, if you downloaded and installed the CAP drivers, can be the reason of your issue. CAP is meant to be used just by crossfire systems, 2 GPUs

dual 5870’s. It’s not the card per se. But it is the card in conjunction with GW2. I’ve already extensively tested it with other games and no blue screens (TSW looks awesome on DX11 and everything maxed BTW). I’ll keep testing and messing with it but so far it is only when I play GW2 that my computer blue screens (which has NEVER happened prior to this). I’ll keep messing with it, perhaps it’s still a setting somewhere that is not compatible.

That’s what I thought too but have had others tell me that it’s not just for crossfire. But I am going to do some more digging and find out for sure. If it’s not needed then I will remove the CAP drivers.
Ok, after some initial digging I found that NO, CAP drivers are not required for single GPU configurations but that YES they can improve performance for some games running in single GPU configurations.
I am actually going to uninstall CAP drivers and see what happens in game. fingers crossed

Then don’t overclock! The Ghz edition 7970 is know to having problems in that department. I got a Asus 7970 ghz edition aswell and it HATES overclocking. But only in GW2. if i go over 1040mhz i get all sort of GW2 problems it becomes unplayable. but this doesn’t happen in other games. Just a warning
:edit: noticed now you said “underclock” im sorry.

I would check the temps on your video card and cpu. As well as is your cpu overclocked?

I wouod check the temps on your video card and cpu. As well as is your cpu overclocked?
Already been doing that. All temps are within norms, GPU and CPU are set to stock speeds (no OC), tried with CAP and no CAP drivers. All settings according to the Devs sticky. My computer still blue screens after about 5 minutes of playing GW2.

I’v had 3 friends with the excact same problem over the years ( last one 2 months ago). Crashing after 5 min in game after changed a piece of hardware. Solutions for all 3 of them: buy new PSU. They all had different psu’s with enough watts. But the different outputs from the psu had fault or couldn’t deliver to the new hardware. One of them (a year ago) even had a only 1 year old 600w psu. And the problem started as soon as he changed graphics card, no symptoms before that whatsoever. just like you. He got a new PSU and it worked.
Try another PSU. I can almost guarantee its the problem! . As i had much experience with that particular problem and what your describing is the psu. Either faulty or not enough umpfh!

GW2 runs video cards much hotter than many other games, even games that are more taxing. I don’t think anyone has figured out why. Some cards default fan settings just aren’t sufficient. They need to ramp up earlier. Get an overclocking program and turn up the idle and low demand fan speeds. If you are overclocking and getting errors, turn the power back to default.
Agree about temp. Just to update my issue, i cannot got over 60 fps. Seems the client is behaving like if was capped. I truly hope on an update of this issue all of us with highend videocard are having about real performance expected.
Rift still only gives me 30-40 fps in meridian and 60 everywhere else on max and I have two. 7970s sooo gw2 isn’t so bad.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
Battlefield 3 which is an other planet compared to gw2 runs on my card at 150+ fps ultra settings 1080p What Rift perform, is not of our interests, their dev team should improve it.
Your system should be be able to get over 60fps, unless you are talking about WvWvW or crowded cities.
What is your Core CPU% and GPU%usage.
The only exclusive skyhammer stream
Well rift should be of your interest. As it is an mmo and it has been out for more than 2 years now and it hasn’t been “optimised”. So it is relevant, unlike your comparison to Battlefield 3, which has no bearing on anything.
/ 2x XFX R9 290x in Crossfire
CPU a peak of 73% max, GPU a peak of 74% LA. Temp: a peak of 45 C
@Swordbreaker IF you want to talk about other mmos, WoW Dx11 ultra preset 8x AA 1920×1080 , 75 FPS min (the client is not fully optimized for ATI, nvidia cards goes to 90+)

I have a HD 7850, having perfect FPS always. There are basically 2 options that have a big impact on FPS and you might wanna put these under the max:
1. Render sampling – set this to “native” instead of “supersample”
2. Use best texture filtering – turn this off (it’s a check box at the bottom)
These provide a minor graphics increase and a big FPS loss.
