So as the title says it: I keep getting the blue screen of death whenever I try to install the game. It goes fine for a while, but once it reaches 30-45% completion I get a BSOD and I have to restart my machine. I reinstalled once before to try and fix corrupted file crashes and such, and even then I was getting BSOD during the download. It happened like twice and then when I went to bed it managed to get through the entire download when I checked back on it in the morning. I recently did a system restore and have to download the game all over again, but this time around I can’t even do it. I’ve been trying for over 15 hours now to install the game but I keep getting BSOD during the download. I’ve rarely gotten it outside of this instance and it gets me thinking that it has something to do with the launcher. I could be wrong but it keeps happening around the same percent of download and makes me think something else is going on.
I run Windows 7 64bit SP1
AMD FX-8150 Eight-Core Processor at 3.61GHz
Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1866MHz
Nvidia GTX670 (evga)
Asus Sabertooth AMD 990FX motherboard
(ALL of these components are 1 month or less old)
It’s getting to the point where I don’t want anything to do with the game anymore. I really enjoy it, but between the corrupt file crashes and the subsequent inability to repair or reinstall, I just don’t want to stress myself out and put up with it. Every time I crashed, and now get BSOD I just want to lose my mind and break something. I just spent an assload of money upgrading my computer and I feel like I’m getting shafted, because GW2 and Borderlands 2 were gonna be the only things I’d be playing. And right now I can’t even install Guild Wars. I’m so frustrated.

Hmm.. Haven’t heard about a bsod in the launcher before. Do you have Nvidia 306 drivers? If so, try to downgrade them to 304.
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-uk
It’s a known problem that the 600 series got problems in GW2 with the 306 drivers.
I can relate and share the OP experience with the launcher/patcher downloader thing.
I have been trying to download and install gw2 since I bought deluxe on Sat 1st Sept.
I finally got the game installed this morning and managed to log in and create a character. I got to the first NPC and accepted his fed-ex.
I had to AFK at this point but on return to PC all was not well. Black screen scrolling txt looking for CD ROM! looking for USB boot! and looped that cycle. It was a BIOS screen.. I went POSTAL.. it took me 2-3 hours to resolve and I have this happen ever since I started the GW2 download.
My wife could not believe how many times and hour my PC was chucking a BSOD. My PC never does that EVER. Not in all my years of building computers (vocation).
I had to push & pull my RAM to get the PC to post again. Now I am back in windows and tried to run GW2 again but the launcher is back to 0% and over 217,100 files to DL.
But I will be amazed if it can pass 30% with out a BSOD…
Like the OP MeBladder I have had no end of trouble with GW2 and now my PC is a nervous wreck. I am not far behind it :S and I honestly feel like something nasty has happened to my PC.
I use it intensively for photography developing! And like to chill out with a good MMORPG at the end of the day. I just can not find a good MMO to play. I was hoping that GW2 would be the one. I did go through GW1 from Alpha – Beta – Omega and beyond. But GW1 is lacking and limited as you all will know but its success is a triumph.
You have many crash reports that my PC has sent to you via the GW2 reporting tool. You have all my system details. etc. But for other readers:
Asus M4A77TD Pro AMD 770 (Socket AM3) DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 250 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) Processor
4GB Corsair XMS3 (2×2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz 1.65v Dual Channel Kit – TW3X4G1333C9A
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
1TB Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 3.5" SATA II Hard Drive
550W XFX Core Edition 80PLUS Bronze Power Supply (Seasonic OEM)
The Corsair RAM was RMA’d at system commissioning time (2010) and was tested faulty. Was replaced.
I am investigating the north bridge on the mobo for over heating.. As it is passively cooled.
There is no dirt/fluff/dust/debri etc inside the PC. I cleaned it
The case is a full Aluminum Lian Li PC60USB (GORGEOUS)
My ADSL upstream is 250kbs and downstream is 6mps
Since I bought the game I have swapped RAM, swapped DVD ROM drives and HDD on the IDE controller (thinking it was a controller fault or DVD ROM fault).
I have rebuilt the Windows 7 partition on my SATA HDD.
I have added an IDE HDD and built windows 7 on that so I am now dual booting and both windows share the GW2 BSOD dance.
One thing for sure that I will put my blood on is that the computer only becomes unstable when I start GW2.
14% and 185,927 files remain… Regardless of the fact that I have DL all these files every day since 1st Sept. Why is there no RESUME on the launcher? People say there is but I can assure you there is not! For I have DL over 200k files every single BSOD.
My DAT file is over 14GB and gets time stamped fresh every game launch.
The repair runs and rebuilds or repairs the DAT file etc.
F:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.DAT (14.1 GB (15,156,862,224 bytes))
UAC is off and I run as admin…
I have bought some new RAM different to above (probably can not purchase them now) it should arrive today. I am now looking at a new MOBO. Because I do not what else to do.
I do feel regret now for buying GW2 and I feel like I am going to have to spend more money yet to get my PC stable again for Photograph development :S
I expected better than this from Anet. Having just been shafted by Blizzard with the abortion that Diablo3 is I am feeling very strange about the video games industry now.
It used to be games for gamers built by gamers! Well I fear those days are gone. It is all about money and nothing to do with player enjoyment now.
What a sad shallow world we now live in.
Hmm.. a wild suggestion. Not even sure that it will work, but worth a try…
Do you have USB 3.0. If this is the case, USB3.0 get’t some of the power from the CPU (On some mobo’s). I heard about some mobos get’s it from the PCI-e too. If you try disabling usb 3.0, maybe you’ll get more power, and a chance to prevent BSOD.
I know it’s a wild guess. But i would say it’s worth a try if you got usb 3.0.

In my first post i said that i haven’t heard about bsod in the launcher, but after looking through a lot of posts, and googled around. It seems like it IS a common problem. I hope a fix, workaround or whatever will be released soon, so you guys can start playing.
Best of luck!
Hi Tjynde, thanks for the interest alas there is no USB3 on my mobo

Good thinking though!
Cheers
Your welcome.
I will continue to look for posible fixes. If you find something. It’s very important that you post what you did! That way we can link to this thread if another person get’s the problem.
Ah well I am back to the woes of BSOD anytime I go near the GW2 exe.

I think I may have figured it out on my end. I never thought it was my hardware, but it appears that my RAM is the culprit.
I took out two sticks of it and tried the downloader again. I got blue screened faster than I did with all my RAM in. So I picked one of the sticks and swapped it with one that I had just taken out. Launched the downloader again and around the same timeframe as the other I got blue screened. I swapped out the other stick and now my download is going farther than it has before.
Even though I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic and it came back fine, it just has to be my RAM. I got it in late July from either Newegg or Tigerdirect, so I hopefully have a warranty on it still. Makes me pretty mad though, I spent 120 bucks on that 16GB set and in less than 2 months is poops out on me. Let’s hope that my Corsair power supply doesn’t crap out on me too. I’d hate to go through that situation again.
I don’t know if this will help you guys out or not, but just try removing/swapping out your RAM and give it a go.
