A friend of mine is having an issue when trying to launch the game. None of his settings has been changed on this computer except the small patch that he downloaded today. Since that patch went in, he gets a black screen every time he tries to load guild wars 2, he can’t get out of the program except with a hard boot. The patcher runs, auto play logs him in, and it looks for a second or two like normal, then suddenly the black screen appears and that’s it.

black screens on windows XP can be a result of running out of Paged Pool, which was very limited on NT5.

there is a way to increase this and possibly fix it on the steam support database

Delete the local.dat file in your gw2 directory, resets your settings.

Hi, in another post I also read to delete the local.dat. It worked for me! Thanks.

Someone should tell the support people about that ….

I have been experiencing this problem since Halloween and I can confirm that deleting the local.dat does indeed work.
I have also noticed that you don’t even need to keep on doing that after the initial time, you just need to make sure you do not save your username and password for auto-login. I have found, at least, that if I manually type in my information each and every time the post launch black screen does not occur.

This has solved his issue, at least for now. Thanks for the heads up on the local.dat file guys.
