Black screen issue
Is you CPU or video cards overclocked? If so, put them at stock. I have read that problems like this are often due to your own system stability, and not the game. A lot of people don’t have this issue, so it’s hard be sure it’s their programming.
You don’t really expect a response to your post do you? Similar posts go unanswered by official reps. Your best bet is to file another ticket I think.
I realize you don’t want to hear this, but in my experience, problems like this often need to be addressed by the player.
I realize it always seems like the patch caused the problem, but it’s also possible the problem always existed on your PC, and the patch exposed it.
Hey michael,
I don’t think the problem is on his end. Myself and many other players began having issues on the Oct. 15th patch release. None of us had ever encountered this problem prior to the patch. My drivers are up to date, nothing is overclocked, no heating issues, anti-aliasing is set up properly, other games run fine- yet GW2 crashes and shuts down my computer after playing for 10 minutes.
Having the same issue here as well though slightly different. I never fully blue screen but GW2 completely locks up and doesn’t come out of it.
In addition, my black screen lock up with video adapter failure happens within 2 seconds of logging in every single time now.
I’ve been playing for almost 3 weeks now with graphics settings most all set to max and have had no issues whatsoever. This constant crashing started happening today around 2pm CST. I can only hope its related to implementation of the halloween patch and when it’s finally deployed the issue will be fixed.
I’ve tried multiple fixes from other threads including rolling back to earlier drivers with fresh installs, running all lowest settings, tweaking nvidia control panel settings and nothing has worked as of yet. All drivers are up to date and nothing is overheating.

if the patch was to fix this issue i’ll be the first one to tell you that you failed if not then fix it please i want to do the holloween event
I have the same problem.
I bought the game today, installed it and I cant make a character.
Halfway, the screen goes black and I have to reboot.
I have done all concerning the video card.
I never had any problem with any programs on my computer.
Don’t even think about blaming it on my system or anything,
get this straightened out please !
Patch definitely did not improve this issue at all. New beta drivers for Nvidia came out today but they also have not fixed the problem. I have even done a completely fresh clean install of windows, GW2, and video drivers, and the problem still persists.
Based on my own findings and all the hundreds of other threads on this issue I’ve dug through in the past 16 hrs trying to fix it, that the issue is not on our end but something on ArenaNet/Nvidias side and we’re just kinda screwed until they can fix it :\
Patch didn’t solve the issue for me either.
New NVidia beta drivers out today but they did NOT address this issue at all.
Did you try this https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Black-Screen-Issue-Nvidia/first#post3964 ?
This is your calling, to The battle of your life.
It’s not on our end it’s on Areanet’s end and they are ignorring the problem!
Also experiencing the black screen issue, started today after the hotfix patch making this a DEFINITE Arenanet issue that needs resolving on their end.
I run the game under Windows and under Mac, I had solved the blackscreen during play issue by adjusting the settings. But after todays patch it is back after about half an hour of play.
No other graphic intensive game I run on Mac or Windows has this issue which all points to their end.
just so we are all clear on the crashes. this is crashesing your whole computer or just the game?
Actually for me it seems to kinda vary. As I have worked with support trying numerous fixes it has changed slightly. At first the game would lock up then flip back and forth between black screen – desktop – frozen game for 5-10 min before finally it would blue screen, crashing the computer altogether. While trying things to resolve the issue now it usually freezes – black screens – goes back to game for a few seconds – freezes – black screens – and then the grame will crash and give a pop up saying “GW2 has suffered from an irrecoverable graphics error, pelase see the site below” with a link to support site, no error codes.
@Washac I’ve tried numerous video settings both ingame and in nvidia control panel and none of them have remotely helped with GW2 though I am in the same boat as no other intense games have any issues whatsoever.
All the reading of all the threads of all the people having this issue and all the things they and myself have done to try and fix it, I am also convinced this is an issue on ArenaNets end, not ours or NVidias as people with AMD cards are experiencing the exact same issues as well.
Kirino, my entire comp shuts down and begins to restart after GW2 crashes.
With me I have to turn off and reboot.
ok now that i hear this i’m not to sure weather it;s areanet or something else becuz i was playing SC2 yesterday becus i was bored with out GW2 and the same thing happened in that game as in GW2. My whole computer locked up with a fuzzy screen froceing me to restart it same as GW2 altho i did get about 10 games before this happened were as GW2 i lock up right after getting my my toons.
Seeing as this is happening in another game and it;s happening to people with dif graphic cards i am wondering what else could be at fault here.
Okay guys, I just tried playing Chivalry- and the same thing just happened: Chivalry crashed then shut my computer down and restarted it. I have absolutely no idea what to think of this.
As I have had all day off work I have been trying alot of diffrent things out to try and solve my black screens. Using a GTX 580.
Does not matter what type of NVIDA driver I try. So what finaly made it work (tried tweaking for ever in MSI afterburner aswell) for me was to install 310.33 (Custom – override any pre settings). Then in game, I selected Anti-Aliasing from FXAA to none. Next was to select V-SYNC on. After that i re-anbled Anti-Aliasing to FXAA. And I havent had a black screen since -.-
I just started having this issue today (10/25). Screen goes black after about 10 minutes and and I have to reboot the PC. I have a Radeon 5770, so I don’t think it is limited to Nvidia cards. I’ve been playing this game daily for 2 weeks with no issues until this morning, so it looks like something with the most recent patch. I haven’t updated any drivers recently.
I have another system with an Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS that has no issues.
so as far as i can tell it;s not the graphic cards or the game since other games are starting to act up too so the question is what could be causeing this? as far as i can tell it’s only happening to online games. Any one have any idea as to what could cause this?
Did you guys try :
310.33 (Custom – override any pre settings). Then in game, I selected Anti-Aliasing from FXAA to none. Next was to select V-SYNC on. After that i re-anbled Anti-Aliasing to FXAA. And I havent had a black screen since -.-
Tried the 310.33 and options toggle like you suggested to no effect. Still crash within 5 seconds loading into the game if not instantly.
Well after everything I did with support they are fully convinced its a hardware issue, even though the only thing that has any issues is GW2 and the Unigine Heaven program they had me use to test it out. Doesn’t make a lot of sense since other intense online games still work perfectly smooth under intense situations as well but I guess as far as they are concerned I’m just screwed :\
ok just to try and find out what is causing this let me ask some questions.
1. What OS is every one using?
2. Could this have some thing to do with Java?
3. Could this be a new type of Virus?
4. What type of Graphic cards do you have and is any one with the same cards fine?
5. What kind of Anti-Virus software do you have?
6. Are you useing a router and is any one that is fine useing one?
7. (trolling) Could we all be traped in a dream world?
Black screens are most certainly an issue with the UI OVERLAYS. It only happens to me while either using my maps, chats windows, ui in general. Also, there is an issue during scene transitions which have a ui overlay.
