What brand is you gpu?
Also, you say you let it sit, so it hasn’t been used at all before this?
And what about other program’s/games?
Do you get any kind of error report?

I was having a similar issue. My findings are here:
Mah GPU is a AMD Radeon HD 7770-
Basically, I built the computer, played on it a week or two, moved to Germany, and didn’t get it unpacked until recently(about a year after the move.)
When I unpacked it, I did a full format, put on…..basics, really. LoL, GW2, D3, DirectX 11, Chrome, kitten NFO Viewer, and that’d pretty much it besides drivers that shipped with the components. (And a updated video card driver).
I’m not sure where I would see error reports. both my screens blacken, then I have to reset to start the vidcard up again.

My bad, I meant you power supply. I somehow got that mixed with GPU…
It’s really important to have one of a good brand and with enough power.
Depending on the brand, 500 is a bit low in my opinion.

A 500W PSU is good enough for your machine. The brand (which can dictate performance) might be an issue. What brand is your PSU?
Also how do you know your video card shuts off? Nevermind, you said black screen and a hard restart.
Intel 520 120GB + 240GB / 2 x WD Caviar Black 1TB (RAID 0) / Corsair AX1200 / ASUS VG278H
Windows 8.1 Pro x64 / ASUS Xonar Essence STX / Sennheiser HD 650 / Logitech Z-5500
It’s a corsair 500W PSU
you didn’t say what Video Drivers you are running. I have a HD7770 In my PC, running 13.4 and do not have that issue. BUT running the Beta drivers It would be a hit and miss.
Also to rule out Heating issues, download GPU-Z and run the sensor tab with logging, and make sure your GPU is just not overheating.
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD
Freshly updated, s whatever the current auto-detect for AMD is. I don’t believe my pc is overheating, but I’ll see if i can make it crash with this program up
And so far, my video card has had no temperature increases out of normal. What else could this possibly be?
