Q:

I can’t play the game without it giving me a black screen all the time. My gameplay time varies from 5 minutes to 2 hours. I play, then a random black screen appears and a few seconds later my computer reboots itself. I found that someone got an answer at support to update to a beta version of a graphic card driver, so I did just that. I thought it helped me, but after a bit of playing (maybe like 5 hours) the crashes came back. And now they’re more frequent than ever. I monitored the heat and that’s not the case. I also saw the pinned thread about changing setting in NVIDIA control panel, but I double checked and it was already set the way it should be. Another thing is that I ran the game smoothly during beta weekends, it started happening around the launch.

My graphic card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 430

Yeah I, having the exact same problem I have GeForce 210 I’m no exper but you might need to update you video card or maybe get another power supply a stronger one. Black screens can be a result of many different issues so best bet is to have it checked by someone which is what I’m trying to avoid but it seems like the best thing to do.

I get a black screen as soon as I hit play, and when I go into task manager it says my game is not responding. Got an ATI Radeon HD 4800 graphics card. Haven’t been able to play at all, it’s really pissing me off.

One on my computers is experiencing the same thing and I have not been able to determine the cause. I was hoping that someone from support could figure it out since I have the unique situation of having two computers with identical hardware – one with the black screen issue and the other without.

I’m getting the same problem with the Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 (Version 304.79). Really annoying bug… I’m lucky if I can get 20mins of gameplay before my machine hard locks.

Hey Taz and anyone else with this random black screen issue. If you are using a router please unplug it and plug directly into your modem using a cable, take the router out of the equation completely and plug your computer directly into the modem. Tell me if that fixes the problem please.

Why do people even post this kind of nonsense? I’m having the exact same issue with a GTX 570 and I run all other games flawlessly. We most likely DO NOT need new graphics cards – this is obviously an issue with GW2.

I feel your pain OP. I thought I fixed the problem when I rolled back to 296 drivers for my GTX 570 since I didnt have these issues for over a week, but they returned after Friday night’s patch.

I also have the same problem than you , i can play GW2 for 5min-2hours , and then I got black screen and my computer just stop working, and I have to turn it off, I have update my drives.
When I login, I got a message that say "Hardware issues detected, and I’ve got "current Nvidia: 301.42 Nvidia " and “Recommended: 304.79 Beta Nvidia”, i’ve already got the nvidia website to install that version, and it says that is compatible with windows 7 and my graphic card Nvidia gforce gts 450, but i try to install says that is incompatible with my pc.

Thanks for all the replies.

@Alestel
Unfortunately I can’t do that, there’s no way for me to do it ‘cause the router is in a different room and I can’t get a cable there.

Try going to your routers settings by entering the IP address through a web browser and disable SPI ( router firewall ) and see if that makes a difference

Mega, i had this crashing issue for like 2 weeks…… I would get a black screen and only see the cursor and hear in game music. I would have to restart the client to get the game going again. I unplugged my router and went straight into the modem and havent had the issue since.

it must be different issues and im sorry for my frustration and harsh language. My problem or crash shutsdown my entire system after 30 seconds of gameplay, seemingly a different cause whether its hardware or drivers idk.

Hi everyone,

I think I found the solution. Atleast it is working for me. I was having black screens at any random times.. could be after 5 minutes or 2 hours.. but I thought it was when there was a lot of people around me..

Here is my spec:

-ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
-Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500K
-CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 × 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CML16GX3M4A1600C9B
-Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2BAA 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
-ASUS ENGTX560 DCII OC/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

I tried EVERYTHING about removing drivers, reinstalling any versions of the drivers, I updated my bios, I updated any possible thing I could update. I changed any possible settings in Nvidia control Panel and in game also…. Didn’t fix anything.

Here is what fixed it: Went into my DIR 601 router settings under Advanced Settings, Port Forwarding. Added Guild Wars 2, my computer IP and allowed these ports under TCP: 80,443,6112,6600. Did the samething with Windows 7 Firewall.. I would tell you what to do step by step for windows firewall but my windows 7 is in french so you’re gonna have to google: ‘how to create a new rule windows 7 firewall’.

It fixed my black screens AND my random disconnections error that was saying I had firewall problems. I don’t know if it’s the same problem has the ones who said they had to completely shutdown their computers because what I had to do was only ALT+F4. While I had the black screen I could still move my mouse, hear sound and open up the menu (F10 or F11 I think).

I really hope it works for everyone with the similar problem because I know how frustrating it is !!! Good luck

Possible Fix One: Update Driver
Possible Fix Two: Disable Anti-aliasing (Also check to make sure your not overheating)
(Nvidia) Some have reported that changing power management mode to “Prefer maximum performance” has fixed the issue
Possible Fix Three: Underclock by about 20%
Possible Fix Four: Either plug directly into your modem or in your router settings, disable you router firewall (For DIR-601 routers, uncheck SPI in firewall settings)

I tried underclocking by 200 mhz and so far it’s good. I’ll report in later if it keeps on happening. I used MSI Afterburner to do that.

A lot of people are experiencing different kinds of black screens, normally the black screens that lock up the computer, cause BSoD’s and crash are driver/hardware related issues as well as settings.

Normally the black screen where your cursor is still visible, sound is still working, and you are able to close the game, are connection related which means guild wars 2 probably doesn’t like your router.

@Taz hope it works out for you

I have appropriate Beta nVidia drivers, my son sits next to me on his comp and has Radeon. I note when we crash, as the OP randomly but almost guaranteed in a 2hour session, that you can still bring up the F11 and F12 menu’s. Maybe A-net could add a diagnostic ‘send’ to those screens.

Its nothing to do with router, me n the lad are both gamers, play a majillion games, this is the only one that goes pfffft. No overheating, no router issues. There is a glitch in the game that causes this.

Im sure the A-net folks be working on it, be wary of doing anything drastic based on forum advice, I know how frantic folks are to play, but re-installing windows, reseating cards, buying new cards…..will most likely just cost time and raise frustration.

Diablo 3 had all sorts of dropouts in its first few weeks, all sorts of alchemy and whitchcraft suggested to fix it….then oooo look patch….fixed.

Update: Underclocking in MSI Afterburner has fixed the issue of my black screens!
However, that’s only a temporary fix and I hope Anet figures something out.
