Read the FAQ in February, decided to buy the game in anticipation of the expansion. The price of the Heroic Edition was $10 cheaper on Amazon than the full price on Arenanet’s website at the time, so I purchased from Amazon as they are a very trusted vendor.

Saw the announcement today and decided to submit a ticket with Amazon to see if they would issue a refund. Amazon refused

I’m basically SOL and will only get a character slot rather than a refund if I choose to preorder GW:HOT, despite Anet’s false advertising in the FAQ right?

You can always wait until HoT drops in price, since saving money is important. I always wait for sales to purchase something, unless I want it right away.

If the retailer you chose doesn’t have a refund policy that meets your needs, do take care in the future to investigate said policies. I always do when making a large purchase.

Anet made no false advertising in their FAQ. I went and read it.

“If you purchased the core game from a third party, we are unable to provide a refund. However, if you registered the core game between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 and upgrade it by prepurchasing any Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns edition before Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns‘ launch, we will add one additional character slot to your Guild Wars 2 account. The process of delivering your additional character slot will be the same as described above. If you would like a refund, you will need to contact that third party, as refunds are dependent on their policies and rules.”

Clearly states the refunds are dependent on their (3rd party) policies and rules.

The Knowledge Base (FAQ and other articles) you quote has had a refund article since inception that has not changed. It clearly states refunds are only for goods purchased through the Official ArenaNet site.

Thus, no false advertising when it comes to refunds (not that I believe there ever was any false advertising, anyway).

Again, always read refund policies before making any purchases. (Both Amazon and ArenaNet clearly describe their refund policies.)
