Buying GW2 for a friend
I’ll see what I can find out about this.

I bought GW2 for someone else – used my PayPal and my billing info, e-mail address and so forth. Serial came in my e-mail and I forwarded it to him. He’s had no problems playing so far – I should note we’re in different countries (but both countries use the NA version of serial codes) and that hasn’t caused any problems either. I’m guessing the only issue would be if you’re in a NA version area and your friend is in an EU version area, but I’m not really sure about that.
The area only restricts where you log in. You can play on any server.
I see another problem: if there is some question to support (not any, but some), it is required to give serials and billing information. If you buy it for somebody else, the other person usually don’t have the billing information. In case the account will be hacked, this might cause additional work to get it sorted out.
I’d like to know the answer to this as well.
I was planning on buying my friend the digital version of the game too.
Also how does the serial key work? As in, right now with the free upgrade to the delux edition. Will there be two keys delivered or just one?
Anyhow, I’d like to purchase the digital edition for a friend for Christmas. If it becomes too much of a hassle I think I might just buy a boxed copy (standard edition) and ship it.
Also is there any way to insure that we will be able to play on the same server? As it stands now I’m in a guild with several real life friends and it would be soooo much easier if our friend could join us rather than have all of us try to switch servers and lose our current guild upgrades…
Here’s what I learned (confirmed by others in this thread):
You can purchase the game using Paypal for your friend as usual. Once your friend goes to register the account, they can do so using their own email address.
In other words, when you purchase the account, you will be given a serial code. Do not use the serial code, but send it to your friend and let him or her use the code to register for a Guild Wars 2 account.
Thanks for being so generous, and for supporting our game with your gifts!!

I did this exact thing Gaile, and wrote you about it yesterday, and my friend has been unable to login (his game wasn’ teven finished downloading) when on his account it said he’d had Unacceptable behaviour and to try again after the ban was gone. This is ridiculous. I’ve gotten no responses from support either (and neither has he.)

There’s a topic for following up on support tickets if they’re over 3 days old, you could try that:

Good luck getting stuff sorted out.
Personally, I’d recommend buying a physical copy of the game then sending the code from it to your friend. Specially if your friend is living on a different continent. Buying it through ArenaNet’s online shop creates a big chance of being flagged as a fraud. It took me over a month to get my account released after being accused of fraud (my bf bought the game for me).
I’m not saying it’s not possible to do it through the online shop. Just saying out of experience I’d definitely do it through an physical copy.
@Genghis Khan All you can do is wait I think >_< until you get one chance to create the character ><.
I bought the game to play with my friends, but the server they play on is constantly full and will not allow me to create a character, is there a way around this?
Try to go there on different times of a day. Even when a server is full, sometimes it is less full than at other times.
This is the way others have done it (and told about it here) and this is recommended by the Anet people (again told here before).
I’m attempting to do the same thing, but it keeps saying “payment authorization failed”.
I triple checked, I have the money in my account. it appears to be a similar issue to the one that wasn’t letting me buy gems. Is there some reason that i shouldn’t be able to purchase the online addition with Paypal or credit?

Your best bet is to contact CS so they can assist you with your purchase. Top of Page – Services/Support – Submit a Request.
Good luck.
