Hi all,
i’ve just bought a new PC:
CPU – AMD FX-8320 8-core
Mobo – Gigabyte 970A-DS3
GPU – Nvidia GTX 660 Ti 2GB
Ram 8Gb (4Gbx2) Veangeance
and i want to know somethings….
This is my temp normally
http://i40.tinypic.com/35jdnww.jpg
and he can reach easy the 65°C…
Now… i wanna ask…
it’s normal? or it’s too high?
How i can manage this?
I’m a little scared because it is new… and with my old pc i play with low res…

Oh and sometimes i have a fps drop like this… just for 10-20 sec…
http://i44.tinypic.com/154jedd.jpg

What i can do?
There is a config that i need to follow for my Nvidia GTX 660 Ti?

Now im trying SweetFx… but really dont know what i can do…

I would stop any overclocking you are doing on the CPU, if any. Buy a better CPU cooler, like the CoolerMaster’s 212 since the stock one isn’t the greatest:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099
and make sure you have some decent thermal paste instead of mustard. Arctic Silver 5 seems to work well for newcomers to entry-level enthusiast PC upkeep.

You used fresh thermal paste, right? It looks like something went wrong.

I can’t seem to find the max case temp for that CPU, but I’m willing to bet it’s 65-70 C (which is typical for the FX series).

I’m not sure what you can do besides moving your computer into a better/cooler environment. If new paste and a new heat sink made things worse, either there is still a bad connection between the CPU and the heat sink or something went crazy wrong with QA at AMD.

This doesn’t sound right… Have you sanitized the cpu surface and bottom of the cooler before re-applying the compund? How much did you use? Are you 100% sure that you installed it correctly?(I mean applied equal amount of pressure on each screw)

I would be concerned with 74c on that CPU for sure. You should be in the 60s with an oc. Either the heatsink isn’t mounted correctly or you have a bad chip. Either way I would not put it under load until the issue is resolved.

First off, you already had perfectly fine temperatures(21c-57c ) when you first posted, you didn’t need to do anything. Anything below 62c is fine for everyday use for your CPU.

After changing to an aftermarket cooler you made it worse(38c-74c), so you definitely did something wrong as other posters above suggested(not cleaning properly, too much/little thermal interface material, method of application, not properly seated heatsink etc.). Nothing is wrong with your CPU.

Go look up some videos on how to properly clean CPU heat spreaders and heatsinks and follow them properly. Also look for videos about proper application of thermal interface material you are using.

Go try reinstalling the aftermarket cooler following steps carefully.

If you are still unsure about it or can’t properly install the heatsink yourself, you can look for a professional to do it for you.

Edit: You can also check the fan speed the new cooler you installed is running at, make sure its running at maximum speed.

You can use a program such as this: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

As for that FPS drop, yes its normal because of that smoke effect in your screenshot. Smoke effects drops FPS in GW2.

This is the reason why No one should simply recommend to Buy a better cooler and reapply the paste. The guy obviously has no clue what he is doing…and now possibly on the brink of making the problems even worse.Stop reaplying your own paste…Send it to someone who Knows what hes doing, and will mount the cpu correctly.Continue with this and you might end up damaging your cpu.

We all have to stop assuming that when someone asks about a computer that they are DIYers. Note he did say “i’ve just bought a new PC” not “I’ve just built a new PC”. We of course assume it’s a stock AMD cooler or worse but we don’t know that for sure. And yes his temps were fine. AMD CPUs always seem to run hot if all you know of are Intel CPUs. Now they aren’t.

And while it’s easy to apply a cooler to a new CPU, removing an existing cooler and properly preparing the surface of the CPU to accept a new cooler can be problematic for some. It’s not like adding RAM, an additional drive or a video card. It’s a higher skill level.

Of course this is assuming Sunfury is a newcomer to building rigs. Maybe he isn’t. Classic AMD retention clip for coolers aren’t the easiest to work with. Plus direct contact heat pipe coolers don’t have the smoothest surface to start with and paste application techniques can be somewhat different with those.

Now since he hasn’t replied since his first temp readout with the new cooler lets give him some time and useful links than telling him to get professional help.

Yea, he wasn’t even overclocking and had totally fine temperatures compared to the TjCase, suggestions just caused needless spending and hassle of trying to do it properly.

He said he could easily reach 65C in his original post. With my understanding that thermal shutdown for the FX-8320 and FX-8350 being 70C, I was concerned.

Ok I may have missed that one, even so 3c higher than TjCase isn’t something to be concerned about. It’s more like “your temps are fine but it can be better” scenario specially for a stock cooler.

Also thermal shutdown is higher than 70c, he’s already hitting 74c right now without even throttling down. Not sure what the exact number is though but its normally 90-100ish C, can’t find a proper data sheet for it unlike Intel ><

It is 70c but when it get close to that the cooler fan shoots up to maximum and that takes the edge off right quick. Don’t know when the last time I reset CoreTemp min/max values on my system but my range is 23c-64c with my current temp at 56/57c. That’s 3 of the 4 cores on my K10 based A8 and it’s integrated GPU running seti@home.

Sunfury may have inadvertently blocked the case’s vents or located the tower in an area that heat that’s being expelled can be ingested again. I once had a piece of clear plastic shrink wrap fragment from a new DVD case get sucked up against one of the vents in my case. Couldn’t tell it was there at a glance. Found it by passing my hand along the case and poof, when removed temps dropped 5c (happened to be the vent closest to the CPU).

Not for an AMD FX series it isn’t. Going 5 degrees above max on that CPU series will usually cause crashes and freezes.

Either way, it’s still too hot.

That particular CPU has a power rating of 125 watts (that’s what will give you an idea of how much cooling you really need – the power dissipation). My Athlon FX (a much older model) is also rated at 125 watts, though I have a small overclock so it’s probably closer to 130 watts. I have a great Zalman cooler, but I’ll still hit about 60 C with both cores running at 100 % for a while.

[Note] The case temperature is what’s important here, not the core temperature shown in utilities such as Hardware Monitor. Core temperatures are actually calculated and will be higher than the case temperature.
